ZANDER STICKS WITH DONS

12:00 - 10 January 2008

Zander Diamond will today tell Aberdeen he's staying put - a decision that could keep boss Jimmy Calderwood at Pittodrie.

The 22-year-old is now ready to commit his future to the club following a bumper new offer after weeks of negotiations.

Calderwood rocked the Dons earlier this week claiming he could quit following confirmation Chris Clark, Michael Hart and Barry Nicholson had all rejected new contracts.

But he'll be encouraged by the news Diamond is staying amid the mass speculation linking with Leicester City, Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old's agent Martyn McNeill, son of former Aberdeen manager Billy, intimated his client was ready to prolong his Aberdeen career.

"Aberdeen made Zander a revised offer earlier this week and things look more hopeful," said McNeill.

"We will let the club no what we are planning to do today.

"To be fair to Aberdeen the latest offer on the table is an attractive one."

Diamond has resurrected his career at the Dons this season following a series of inspirational displays.

But as little as a year ago he was out of the team and struggling to find the form that had scouts travelling to the North-east.

He could well go on to become the next club captain and is regarded as the next potential asset Aberdeen could cash in on in future years.

Zander signs a new contract, picks up Scotland caps, becomes club captain after a few years and gets a big money move to the Premiership.

Diamond because we have the potential to get a good few years out of him / club captain / internationalist / sell on fee - or a mix and match of all the above.

Maybe I should start delivering mail for a living?

Good stuff!

Hope it's a decent length contract. 3 and a half years was what was originally being talked about is it no?

If he keeps his form up he will still get a move in a couple of years and we might make seven figures out of it...

Is it too early to start worrying about him signing for one of the OF in the future?  ;D
