TheDonbytheDee Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 Love having a read through of the On This Day, section on the Heritage Trust site. What caught my eye today was the game on the 2nd January 2003, against the Victims. This game kicked off our centenary year and we got a credible draw against a good Victim side and from my memory, we played very well that day and should have won. I remember the game well and still have my match programme and other stuff relating to our centenary year. A crowd of just over 16k and over 3k, were victim fans. Credit to the club for at least getting more fans through the turnstiles nowadays, even if the on field product doesn't match fan enthusiasm. Quote
swaddon Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 The centenary was a bit of a let-down, if I recall correctly. Hopefully they've got big plans for our 125th in 2028. Apart from winning the quadruple, of course. Quote
blinlemon Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 60 (sixty) years ago today, 3 January 1966, I was privileged to be allowed to attend Pittodrie for the first time. Jimmy Wilson and Billy Little had us 2-0 ahead at HT. Perth scored three in the second half. Every time I see Chalky Whyte, I give him grief for spending the second half on his butt as the pitch was icebound, and Saints players had changed into better footwear for the conditions. It was neither my best day, nor my worst as a Red. 2 Quote
Elgindon Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 Also on this day, anyone at the St J game early '84.Up 3 - 0 and it started snowing heavily.Power in the City went off, match abandoned Was there an early NY game at Tannadice we won 4 - 0 early/mid 80's.Canna find it on Heritage 1 Quote
OrlandoDon Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 A few today, last time I was at pittodrie, Jan. 3, 1998. Freezing. Dean Windass goal and we beat Dundee united 1-0. Managed by the amazing Alex miller, would you switch jimmy for him? Quote

I despised Miller long before he become our manager. One of the many, many lows under Milnes stewardship. Were real dark days then. Might be shyte now, but still Scottish Cup holders. 2 Quote

People forget, we had aitken, heggarty, ebbe, miller, Patterson between smith/scott and calderwood. Plus McGhee post calderwood. I don’t think cormack has picked the worst managers we’ve ever had. you are right about jimmy, very likable and we were all behind him. We badly want him to succeed. The fan support for his team has been amazing, it’s just not working. Maybe a back four today brings a change in fortune. 2 Quote

If memory serves me right the next day the red tops had a story of a Tic fan who bet his entire life savings (circa £13k) on a Celtic victory at odds of 1-13. Russell Anderson's header snatched his £1k profit and possibly his marriage too 1 Quote

The snow when it came was relentless. Not sure how but somehow made it out to Huntly by train and was then holed up there for a couple of days Quote

TheDonbytheDee Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 20 years ago today, a cup game against the Jute, at Tannadice. The Don's fought back from being 2-0 down, at half time, to win the game 2-3. A rare away trip for myself and a fair old bounce at our third goal. https://www.afcheritage.org/matches/match-report?id=4703 1 Quote

Elgindon Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 Also a rare away trip for me,went along with my brother inlaw,a St J fan.He was pretty shocked at the antics of the many pissed Dons fans, lol. Looked dead and buried at H/T before the not very prolific Stevie Crawford grabbed a hat/trick? just checked - 2,Nicholson got the other Quote
TheDonbytheDee Posted January 8 Report Posted January 8 On this day back in 2011, Craig Brown and Archie Knox took over at the Dons. I'll be honest and say that I thought we were really shyte during their time at the Dons. His baffling post match comments used to irk me so much, clearly wasn't watching the same game as the rest of us. I know, fine guy, laid the blocks for McInnes and all that, but I never rated Brown much as a manager. Also in 2002, we beat St Johnstone 2-0 away in the Cup. Ben Thornley scoring! That is a name from the past. https://www.afcheritage.org/matches/match-report?id=205 1 Quote

Then Jimmy sounded the bugles. Quote
Mason89 Posted January 8 Report Posted January 8 Whenever I see Ben Thornleys name written down, it automatically switches to his high pitched whiny voice in my head as I’m reading it 3 Quote

One of their goals first half was an obvious hand ball by that Fernandez. Edited Saturday at 14:19 by InversneckieDob Quote
swaddon Posted Saturday at 19:35 Report Posted Saturday at 19:35 On this day 50 years ago (1976), we beat TSMSTID 5-3 at Pittodrie with a Jocky Scott hat-trick (two penalties) and a brace from Arthur "Bumper" Graham. Quote
TheDonbytheDee Posted Monday at 06:51 Report Posted Monday at 06:51 Not much to report today. Peter Weir left for Leicester City on this day, back in 1988. Quote

I am currently looking at the dividing wall that would have had Peter Weir on the other side of it as he was my next door neighbour when we moved here in 1988. He was playing for Leicester City then, as TDBTD reveals. He spent 3-4 days a week in Leicester and was around here from Sunday-Tuesday generally. A good guy. 2 Quote

I’m sure he would have, but bin day (Thursday) was one of the days he spent at Filbert Street. Only one bin then. In fact, no bins, just the black bags that were a seagull’s buffet. 2 Quote
