I would imagine the reason the commentator said "current" is because he won the World Player of the Year the last time it was decided. So from that point, he is correct.  I don't agree that Ronaldo is the best player in the world at the moment, Messi would be my choice too, but as long as he holds that title people will say things like that because it can be backed up.  Anything else, to a degree, is just opinion.
