Agreed, but the point I was making was that the chances of Aberdeen hosting the Commonwealth Games, or Scotland hosting the European Championships are absolute zero.

Why? Edinburgh hosted the Commonwealth Games at a stadium that was less than half the capacity of the current Pittodrie. And it was only a handful of years ago that Scotland and Ireland marginally missed out on a joint-bid for the Euro Championships. If I recall, SportScotland were seriously looking at throwing funds at Aberdeen City to get a decent stadium ready, if our bid was successful.

And where is the 2014 Commonwealth Games being held? Scotland's not gonna get to host it again for the next 50 years or so (if ever).

As for the Euro's, after Ukraine/Poland it's getting expanded to 24 teams, so we'll need 12 stadiums (no more than 2 in one city though!) each with at least a capacity of 30,000 - where the hell are we going to build them all? And what are they ever going to be used for after the championships?

UEFA also said that they want the championships to be hosted by a single country and no more joint bids so there's no chance of a joint Scottish/Irish/Welsh/anyone bid.

Hope this clears up the matter for you.

Er no they didnt. On both occasions meadowbank was extended with temporary stands boosting the capacity to over 40,000.

(if you can bare it)

You seriously think a city would be given the commonwealth games if the main stadium had a capacity of just 16500 (only 7500 of which is seated)?

As for Scotland and ireland 'marginally' missing out?

More like we were basically laughed out the door and then decided to try and blame ireland for not managing to come up with a stadium - which was bollocks because they had croke park and a redeveloped lansdowne road in the wings. The main issue UEFA had were 5 of the 8 stadiums put forward would be in just 2 cities- Edinburgh & Glasgow. Thats 5 stadiums in the space of 50miles which would be a nightmare for policing, accomodation of the fans, transportation etc. Plus Hampden was being touted as the venue for the final even though it was only the 3rd largest on the list. The scottish bid was rushed and as a result came off as completely half assed so we were kicked out in the preliminary round. we should have set out sights on 2016 instead of rushing to try and snatch 2008 and 2012.

So why bother with a new stadium at all then?  Because the argument of Pittodrie being a little worse for wear seems to be  pretty thin  as we are all being so negative.  Why bother, as a city and football club to attain a brighter future?  Maybe we should just knock the main stand down and have a grassy mound instead.  Problem solved.

Perhaps because one stand is a fire hazard and the fire chiefs 'back handers' are getting more expensive every season and our biggest stand is sinking  since it has no real foundations other than a slab of concrete laid over some sandy soil way back in the early 20th century.

Of course we could try to the first club in history to have a stadium with just 2 goal end stands in use (and we would still have 9500 seats) too

The stand at Alloa was a belter. Mind you with the relentless, horizontal rain it looked mighty inviting. It was a bit like a fat birds arse after 10 pints. Pleasing to the blurred eye and you just wanted to go inside to be warm.

Ah what a fine day that was, I'm still drying out from it! Fuck Health and Safety, i'm all for it :D

However, a Met Office spokeswoman quoted by the Evening Telegraph said that over the long-term Dundee remained the sunniest of Scotland¿s cities.

She said the official level of sunshine for Dundee, which is measured at Leuchars, remained higher than at Dyce, where figures are collated for Aberdeen.

¿Leuchars is still higher than Dyce in terms of sunshine but they obviously picked up on the fact Leuchars isn¿t a city and used it to help themselves," she went on.

"In the long-term Dundee remains sunnier than Aberdeen

Spot the anti-Aberdonian woman working for the Met Office! Jeeeeez. The one thing that we get awarded for, and she goes and rains (no pun intended) on our parade. Why couldn't she just comment with "yes, Aberdeen is the sunniest city in Scotland in 2004".

New plans for £38m stadium for the Dons are unveiled

consultations on amended designs for Loirston Loch complex now under way

By Catriona Webster

Published: 16/07/2010

Fresh plans for a new £38million football stadium in Aberdeen have been unveiled to the public.

A second round of consultations on Aberdeen Football Club’s proposed 21,000-seat stadium at Loirston Loch, Nigg, got under way yesterday.

Planners said the designs have been amended to take into account concerns raised at initial consultations in May, in which around 1,000 people took part. But some opponents to the scheme said they were still not happy with the choice of location.

Designers hope to submit an application for planning permission to Aberdeen City Council by the end of this month.

Mike Halliday, planning consultant for Aberdeen Football Club, said: “This is a new home for Aberdeen Football Club and an exciting project which has generated a lot of interest.

“This consultation is about showing the community the changes we have made to respond to their concerns and also to showcase the final design.

“The more consultation we can do the better, and that’s always been the club’s view. We have gone as far as possible to try to address these concerns but we can’t please everyone.”

Some of the issues raised by members of the public in May included the impact of increased traffic in the area and the potential effect on Loirston Loch.

Mr Halliday said a lot of work had gone into designing a transport strategy to get people to the stadium, together with bus company First Group.

Under the plans “football special” buses would run for two hours before and after each game, ferrying people to and from the city centre and the stadium every two minutes.

The strategy also envisages the use of park-and-ride facilities at Ellon, Bridge of Don and Kingswells to ease traffic problems.

A bridge initially included in the plans, which would have crossed the loch, has also been dropped after opposition from residents and local community councils.

Nigg Community Council chairman Alan Strachan said: “They have taken on board some of the things that we have suggested.

“We are still not happy because the greenbelt is being destroyed, because of the close proximity to the loch and also the fact that the country park and recreational area will be destroyed.

“If the football stadium goes in, then that opens the way for other development. In a nutshell, I think it’s the wrong place.”

The public will have a second chance to view the new plans on Monday.

They will be on show at Pittodrie Stadium from 4pm to 8pm.
