Scottish Premiership - Aberdeen v Dundee

The Scottish Cup winners v The Ukrainian Cup winners

Just like the good old days of the European Cup Winners Cup (remember that? We played in it a few times I think) this game brings together the Scottish and Ukrainian cup winners. Shakhtar Donetsk beat the Ukrainian champions on penalties in the final. A great way to win it.

They changed manager in summer and so far he's unbeaten over 90 minutes. Their only loss was on penalties to Panathinaikos.

They've won away from home this season at Besiktas and Servette, and drew away to Panathinaikos. So fair to say we're massive underdogs for this.

Do we rest players for Dundee? Every game gets billed as a "must-win" just now only for it not to be, but I think failure to win that one might be a defeat too far for the board.

Dorrington, Bilalovic and Ambrose all definitely can't play anyway as they're not in the squad. Would like Bilalovic at least to get a run out v Dundee.

Personally, I'd stick with a similar team that started at Fir Park and the 5-2-3, get some familiarity into it. Just three changes: Nisbet, Aouchiche, Palaversa out; Lazetic, Armstrong, Clarkson in. Even if we lose, a big performance at least (and whisper it, maybe even a goal) would give us a badly needed lift.

Don’t really know what to expect. Kind of a free hit too. Maybe playing a European team and not a league game will be a good thing??

Def think we’ll go three at the back, is tobers fit after going off against Motherwell? hope we stick with devlin and gyamfi as wing backs.

Would like to see shinnie and Armstrong on either side of sivert, both can push on while sivert sits. Alternatively Armstrong sits and he’s more mobile, but is he disciplined enough to sit. If he’s the middle of the 3 mids, palaversa on the right of him. Think we need three workers in there, you could argue that’s not sivert but I think he adds to the team despite his clear flaws.

up top really want to see lazetic given a start to see what he can do, he’s much more mobile than nisbet, and I know we haven’t see much, but I think he’s more technical. give karlsson a free role/permission to roam.

2-2, karlsson and lazetic.

This was going to be a difficult game if we were playing well so expecting this to be a watching from behind the couch type of night.

Perversely I do think Shaktar are the type of team that the Dons are set up to play against. I expect Shaktar to have a lot of the ball and be on the front foot which should leave the space for the quick transitions that Thelin goes on about. However with our best goal scorer,  Nisbet, not really fitting the system, Lazetic looking like he has technical ability to play system but not seen anything that suggests he is a striker and seen nothing from Yengi that suggests he is a footballer I can’t see the system working. Add into that that we seem to have two full backs in Jensen and Gyamfi who cannot defend and a defensive central midfield who are slow at best this could get ugly quickly.

Thankfully my post op drugs will last until end of the week so I won’t remember posting this or the game.

1-3 Lazetic proving he is a goal scorer with Dons strike.

Anyway time for the next hit.

Type of game we need a Gueye-type who can hold onto the ball long enough for midfield/wingers to get forward, otherwise we'll never get up the pitch. Not sure yet if Lazetic can play that role, he's only featured as a sub when we've been chasing goals so far.

This is the glamour match of the tournament and the reason that you strive to qualify for Europe. Therefore, for me, it ranks above Dundee in importance. I would be pretty cheesed off as a punter, paying £32 for a ticket for this one,to see us write it off or be saving any players for the weekend. Just have a proper go and see what happens.

It would be a tough ask to expect us to be beating this lot however I don’t think we should just be accepting of a thrashing either. We are on our own patch with home backing and no reason to think that we cannot compete.

The away fixtures are likely to be extremely tough to take anything from and therefore it is important to try to get anything from the home matches to stand a chance of going through.

It might be one of those nights where a more traditional Scottish approach could be the way to go. Play with a high tempo, be a bit more direct, get the ball into the box and see what transpires.

Ah, that explains why Devlin got a chance at the weekend.

See I vaguely remember discussing if that was reason on Saturday but I see there’s no mention of it in the match thread so it may have been with the pink elephant I watched the game with instead.

Is that all one sentence in morphine-land?

Tobers out for most of the season.

Really not had any luck since joining us.

Dorrington into the squad

Lad seems to be made of glass.  Bit of a draw back for centre back. Think we need to move on from him in January.

I may be wrong (occasionally I am) but I don't seem to remember reading anything about him being injury prone prior to signing for us.

A real shame as I think there is clearly a player in there.

Wish him a speedy recovery and hope he can get back on track with an injury free run of games for us.

Match day optimism kicking in and going for a fighting one each draw. Karlsson with our goal.

Hope you’re right Al, at this moment in time I just want us to score a goal, feels like an age ago 😭

No, I don't recall anything being mentioned. I'm wondering if there was an inkling within the coaching staff that it might be the case, and that is why we got Dorrington back?

Anyway, I'm assuming Knoester is fit after his early subbing? Molloy and Polvara as backup centre backs is absolutely fine to be honest. Milne will get a good full season too, which is good.

Sure he came in there on Saturday. The boy frame must be crap. Can't decide if this is a good team or not . At this stage I think he's entitled to drop anyone or as suggested above he could be saving for Saturday.
