I didn't expect that when I woke up this morning! Not sure who I want to replace him, there's not one stand out candidate and don't really fancy any of the names suggested so far. I said Eric Black last time, there's the Gothenburg connection again, but that doesn't have to be a noose round his neck. He's young, he's intelligent, he's articulate and likes his teams to play attractive football and sign players who can play football. IIRC Coventry fans petitioned for him to be re-instated after he was sacked, and I think since then, this season is the only season where they've done any better since Black was in charge.

I don't understand the Billy Stark thing. He's not got a great record at club level and as U21 manager, he's beaten teams you'd expect us to beat before losing to Iceland. Derek Adams and Jocky Scott would be mistakes. There's not really any standout candidate. I thought Hibs were silly to go for Calderwood over Steve Clarke, so he may be an option, and there's Eric Black as usual who I think would do a good job, but I think if we were ever going to appoint him, we would have done it by now. There's not really anyone else in the SPL that I'd fancy. Maybe someone like Alan Curbishley, someone that's got a good reputation but has been out of work for a while?

I see Maguire's been left out of the latest U21 squad. I wonder if that means he's getting called up...

He clearly wasn't match fit. But, the only real way of getting match fit is by playing competitive matches. Once he has a few matches under his belt, I'm sure we'll see the best of him. I'm more concerned that if he's played up front with Vernon, there's not a lot of pace and the only attacking option we have is punts up the park.

If McGhee is carrying on with the 3 upfront, Paton's a better option in one of the wide positions than Mackie or Maguire. Having a full season as a regular starter might be the making of him though rather than a bit part player here.

According to McGhee the deal he said was available was taken off the table so our interest dropped.

Chris Clark was gash. We only missed him because we didn't replace him, he just became a hole in the squad that was marginally less effective than the player himself.
