As for your top six comment, I think expectations are way higher than that.

I agree a few wins are needed and I think (hope) they will come, but I do think we are going to struggle when it comes to challenging in the league while juggling European Football.

How much time are people willing to give jimmy?

You sack a manager when you lose all confidence they can ever turn it around. That's what did it for Goodwin and Robson. I don't believe Thelin has reached the stage of running out of ideas yet and I'm keen to see the next few months.

Aye, the five wins in 31 is really poor. But forget last season. Different team now, and it took until transfer deadline day to add much needed quality. This season is a bigger judgement of him than last season.

We have six players currently not fully match fit (Nisbet, Lazetic, Karlsson, Gyamfi, Armstrong, Bilalovic).

We have Yengi, Milanovic, Aouchiche still settling in. Yengi in particular has had a lot of criticism, when in reality he's our third choice striker who was thrust in too early due to lack of bodies.

Had all those players been here in July, had a full pre-season, and been available from day one of the season, then it's a different story. Obviously football isn't as neat and tidy as that.

Earlier in this thread - I think before the cup final - I said it would be interesting to see who makes the most improvement this season out of Hibs, Dundee United and Aberdeen - the teams that finished above us, but still have the same managers.

Hibs have had a few plaudits, but haven't won a home game this season (six games).

Dundee United have also had a few plaudits, but they've only beat Strassen and Dundee this season.

The top performing sides were the ones who had League Cup games to help build momentum - Hearts, St Mirren and Motherwell. But it's fine margins with them too. Motherwell haven't actually won a league game yet, but people are raving about them.

To answer your original question (I'll get there eventually), unless the season becomes a disaster and it appears obvious Thelin isn't up to it, then it becomes a conversation. But I'm confident that won't happen.

Think we have to give manger and team time to get up to speed given how many changes there have been to squad. Most of new signings made recently were not starters for their clubs will need time to get match fit.

There were no doubt mistakes made in the summer like lack of friendlies (manager now talking about playing some) and around the recruitment. We were definitely went into season underprepared.

One thing that will have to change is the stubbornness around tactics. Thelin will need to realise that in Scotland we are going to face teams who will pack the middle and be happy not to have the ball which means there won’t be the space to play in on the counter. Thelin needs to change the approach to suit the oppositions set up. Oh and not play Shinnie and Nilsen in the same team.

I think we need to be stubborn as fuck and give him the whole season, regardless. If it's a three year project, then see it through. I don't agree with the phrase "we've backed the manager" otherwise. You can't just throw money around in a transfer window and say that you've done your bit, there's so much room for error in the market, and it takes time. @OrlandoDon points out the huge turnover, but it's more than that. That turnover has happened every single year since McInnes left, which shows the failure of our approach. We've either had players who have been great and left for money or guys that were gash and just left. Probably the issue with not going for Scottish players more regularly (Devlin and Shinnie have made their homes here), or players 27+. @Panda mentions that both Goodwin and Robson (and Glass) had reached a point where they couldn't turn it around, but I actually think that they were fall guys (and Glass) for mistakes above them. Had they been given the public backing of 3 year project, we'd have perhaps seen a better situation. There is little to suggest that Thelin is any more capable of playing entertaining football successfully in this league, and indeed we have started to see a little of the direct ball and get the knock downs that Robson was fond of (which is fine by me). European football this season was always going to be a step too far for us, but it came with a cup, so we just live with it. Our teams are far too transient to belong to any one of the managers we've had since McInnes. They need at least one window to clear out the shite that were bought under their own watch. Managers are usually still clearing out the backlog of the previous manager when they get fired. Normally I'd say three windows, but with our turnover it'd be four. However, the age profile of our team suggests we're not going to get it right anytime soon.

I thought they were fine on Saturday, and really didn't get the reaction that Nilsen received. Palaversa, on the other hand, was absolutely dogshite. The idea of having a dynamic front four and fullbacks going outside the inverted wingers makes sense. Shinnie put in a lot of work in midfield, but he wouldn't have managed that without Nilsen there. There was very little that got through to the back four with those two there. There's a good argument to be made that we should be more adventurous at home, but there's an even better argument that says that our front four plus fullbacks should be scoring from the solid base offered to them. The fullbacks not getting forward quickly enough was quite a problem. Not sure it's in either of their games (wait to see more of Gyamfi of course).

Cannot comment on Saturday as wasn’t there but my general impression from other games is Shinnie and Nilsen slow the play down when together. When teams sit in against us we need to move the ball quickly to try a create space.  Nilsen especially seems to slow the game down. I think one of them with Clarkson is probably way to go.

It's been reported in the Swedish press

Jimmy Thelin on the list of possible national captains

Updated today 14:49 Published today 14:08

Jimmy Thelin from Jönköping is on the list of possible replacements for Jon Dahl Thomasson as the new captain of the Swedish men's national football team. This is according to information provided to SVT Nyheter Jönköping.

Jimmy Thelin is currently coaching Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League where he has had a tough start to the season. The team is last in the table after seven games. This after last season's success where Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years.

Current again

Jimmy Thelin was also in the running as the new national team captain the last time the position was filled, when Jon Dahl Tomasson was hired. And after the announcement on Tuesday that Jon Dahl Tomasson was fired, Jimmy is once again on the association's list of possible new national team captains.

Jimmy Thelin made a breakthrough as a coach when he took Jönköpings Södra to the Allsvenskan in 2015 and then moved on to Elfsborg where, among other things, there were two second places in the Allsvenskan.

SVT has applied for Jimmy Thelin.

Definitely don’t want him to go. I want to see what he can bring within this three year plan. No amount of money will be worth having to deal with another new manager and all that pish.

Pretty sure it's Graham Potter's if he wants it, which from his comments yesterday he very much does. (He lives in Sweden having started his managerial career there).

Thelin still has at least two, probably three, and potentially even four or five, more trophies in him at Aberdeen first.

We'll always have the cup win and thanks for that Jimmy but for your sake as much as mine, just go please.

Resignation letter on Dave's desk first thing Monday morning 🤞

I think I’m in the majority here, probably not Aberdeen fans in general, but I’m willing to give Thelin time. However, it’s been almost a year since our good run ended and we’ve been shite for the majority of that. That says something, there has not been a knee jerk reaction. Dave is giving him time, but money has been spent and his patience must be running thin.

whats eating at me more and more is seeing teams play us, play better than us, more cohesive  and attractive football, and win more than us. Falkirk livi Motherwell and hibs all came here and all look better than us on smaller budgets with weaker players. I don’t think all our signings have been great but I think we do have a decent squad (we’re def lacking in places), and for whatever reason, jimmy is not getting the best out of them. Hate to say it, and I know they haven’t been great so far this season, but Stephen Robinson is looking more and more appealing to me.

weve signed a lot but the inverted wingers didn’t work, we’re back at a back 3 which is hit or miss, and we’re now seeing a formation that I guarantee was not the plan at the start of the season. Things aren’t good.

I will go on record now as someone that has followed Aberdeen for well over fifty five years, if Stephen Robinson becomes next manager of Aberdeen I am done.

I mean c'mon to fuck, you can't be serious about that

Have you actually seen the way his teams play

Might suit you from a few thousand miles away, but there is absolutely no way I would pay money to watch the shite he churns out

That’s one reason’s I asked who do we appoint as I fear it would be Robinson. His brand of football is eye bleeding shite. Not a chance I would be forking out for a season ticket to watch the pish his teams play.

Being so far away is certainly a factor for sure, I don’t see them play other than against us, and in recent years they’ve looked better than us for the most part and he’s been top 6 on a very limited budget. I want someone who knows our league and the type of players that are suited and can have an impact. Open to other suggestions! I liked the way falkirk played us but I don’t know if I’m drawn to a 63 yr old manager.

Still think it’s a three year period minimum. At the same time, as said in my earlier post, cormack has spent money and his patience has to be being tested. We’re being out played by poorer teams and poorer players, and losing…..for the best part of a year.

if I’m starting to consider other managers it tells you even the most patient of fans have almost had it, not a good sign.

No offence meant BUT that thought process is miles behind min

Then hopefully he's learned his fucking lesson and realised that throwing money at a manager doesn't work unless it's millions more than everyone else, and you spend a substantial portion of it on buying everyone else's best players. Nevermind though, once the project players find their feet, we'll walk the league.
