Of course their famous 36-0 win over Aberdeen based side Bon Accord in 1885 remains a record world score. Before the current Aberdeen FC was formed in 1903, the original Aberdeen FC came up against Arbroath in many stirring clashes which was arguably Aberdeen's first real local derby fixtures. The first occasion the sides clashed came in what was one of the early games in Aberdeen's existence on 8th September 1883 in a Scottish Cup tie. Aberdeen played well enough to earn a 2-2 draw and earn another match against their Angus neighbours. A week later the Aberdeen side travelled south without several regulars and suffered a 7-0 hammering in the replay.Arbroath v Aberdeen March 1969 Prog On 4th October 1884 the sides met again in a Scottish Cup tie. Aberdeen had progressed to meet Arbroath after defeating Kirriemuir4-1 in Angus. Arbroath were far more established and an experienced side ran out easy 7-1 winners over Aberdeen. While the cup draw was eagerly anticipated by the new Aberdeen club, the result proved that they were far from ready or prepared for the national competition. The game was played at Recreation Grounds Inches and the Aberdeen team that day was; A Lothian, R Hyslop, W Farrel, C Glennie, J McHardy, J Crow, R Black, R Smith, W Stewart, D Smith, D Lothian. A crowd in excess of 600 turned up for tie. Arbroath took the lead after five minutes and by half time the tie was over as they raced into a 3-0 lead. A Christie own goal was scant consolation for Aberdeen in the second half. One of the more famous meetings between the sides was in 1904 when the present Aberdeen FC won a thrilling Scottish Qualifying Cup tie 4-3 at Gayfield. Reports of the time declared that the special train laid on for the occasion to take the 1500 or so Aberdeen support down was bedecked in the Black & Gold colours or 'favours' of Aberdeen. While there have not been many competitive clashes between the sides through the years, in season 1968.69 Arbroath were actually in the top division and more than held their own that season with Gayfield in particular being a tough venue to visit. While the playing surface back then was seen as one of the best in the country, the close proximity to the North Sea often made the Gayfield ground a difficult place to play football. In March 1969, a week before Aberdeen were due to meet Rangers at Parkhead in the Scottish Cup semi final, the Dons went down in a shock 2-1 defeat in the league at Arbroath. A full strength Aberdeen side was welcomed by a large travelling support but they were left frustrated as the home side stuck to their task and made things very uneasy for Bobby Clark & Co. It was hardly the best preparation for the Dons as they knew that their semi final meeting would be a lot more difficult. Inconsistent as Aberdeen were back then, they still created enough chances to give themselves a boost ahead of the cup tie, but the home side held out to record a fine win. The last occasion the sides met in competitive action was in a Scottish Cup tie at Gayfield in 2005. On that occasion it was a more comfortable afternoon for the Dons as a goal in each half from Markus Heikkinen and Darren Mackie secured a 2-0 win. Only Russell Anderson and Chris Clark, who are both into their second spells at Aberdeen, remain on the books at Pittodrie who played in that last meeting against the Red Lichties. First half was a bit of a non event but Fallon took his goal well. second half was alot more exciting with 5 goals, hit the bar at least once and we should have had a penalty earlier on in the half for the most blatant hand ball you'll see. New signings both looked lively especially Hayes who was causing them all sorts of problems. Bit worried about our cover in defence. In the second half our back four was Considine, Osbourne, Magennis Clark, perhaps as someone suggested we're doing an inverted Spain and playing with no defenders this season. Great to see Milsom back but Fyvie as conspicuous by his absence. All in all a good start to pre-season and fired up the anticipation for the beginning of the season. When Anderson gets crocked (and he will) we then only have considine. Brown best have a plan to loan a good few players in or we're going to miss out on a massive opportunity to capitalise on the abscence of the scum this year. It's deeply worrying.
