"A potential deal with Paul is at a well advanced stage. He would not have been here if we didn't think it was something that was going to be concluded. It is not concluded yet and things can always happen but we are working towards finalising a deal as quick as possible. We are very excited about that. He would be a big asset to us but we have to cross the line with it first.

"He is a quality player, quality individual and a great pro. If we could get him on board he would be a great example and great mentor for the likes of Fraser and Peter and the other young players. He would bring a lot more than simply the performance on a Saturday to the club and to the squad."

I hope if we do get Hartley, it doesn't spell the end of our interest in Hendrie. I've been checking the news online on a daily basis waiting for Hendrie to sign. Seems like we've been signing pretty much every goon except him, though. Just wish we'd push the boat out a bit and get the lad. Pushing the boat out to get a midfield of Hartley, Hendrie, Pawlett and Fyvie (not in that formation) would be worth the gamble in the real hope that it'd attract a few more season-tickets!

Shit, if that was our midfield, it'd be the most excited I've been about Aberdeen pre-season since the prospect of seeing Hignett team up with Jess in the middle.

From the P&J:

The final pieces of Mark McGhee's Aberdeen jigsaw are beginning to fall into place, with Paul Hartley last night becoming the Dons manager’s sixth capture of a productive pre-season recruitment drive.

The former Celtic and Hearts midfielder is likely to be the most important and it will be no surprise if the 33-year-old is handed the captain’s armband.

Hartley took the opportunity to watch his new teammates in their pre-season match at Port Vale last night, a largely uninspiring encounter which the Dons won 1-0 thanks to an 80th-minute Michael Paton penalty.

The capture of combative playmaker Hartley represents a coup for McGhee and the Dons. Hartley may be in the twilight of his career but there are no questionmarks surrounding his fitness.

Jackie McNamara, a comparable addition under the previous regime, had spent two seasons on the treatment table at Wolves before arriving at Pittodrie.

Hartley played 40 times for Bristol City in the English Championship last term, a division which is notoriously demanding physically. He scored five times and Bristol let him go reluctantly when the player cited personal reasons.

Bristol's loss is Aberdeen's gain.

The 25-times capped Scotland midfielder will do very nicely indeed.
