I think he was quoted somewhere saying he'd rather stay down south unless we came up with a lucrative deal for him.

Same goes for me. I'd move to another city if I got offered the big bucks. Do we actually expect this guy to have a deep love for AFC?

He wasn't personally quoted but the EE said:

The 23-year-old hitman has told friends he’s happy to remain in England, and will only head north if a Dons deal proves lucrative.

First time you have laughed in 6 years!

Thats a bit generous ;)

Anyway, taken from MAD, interesting viewpoint on Tommy from a Darlo fan.

" 99.9% certain to join you then.

I wouldn't worry abut the knee injury. He twisted it badly in the last game of the season and tried to carry on playing through it! - we were told it'd be touch and go for him to start the new season. So give it a couple of weeks and he'll be fine. At least you know you're not buying a soft sh-te.

most of us are sorry to see him leave - although I think £75K is probably a fair deal all round.

I am an occasional visitor to the pink palace so have a fair appreciation of SPL footy (please no Hearts jokes - I've already seen the other thread!)

I see no reason why Tommy won't do well for you. He's nothing flash, but is strong, and will give opposition defenders something to worry about all game. It IS a step up in standard, but because of his work ethic he should be able to cope.

I think the biggest test is not his footballing ability - but whether he can perform in front of much bigger crowds - but I also think he has the mental strength to do so. When he first joined us he a was a tad understrength - but off his own back, he toughened himself up for last season and earned his move to a top club. He's an honest pro and I can't see him having any problems settling in at a new club or city.

Best of luck to you and Tommy for this season."

Sounds promising enough.

I think he sounds like he may be an asset. The problem I still have is that he is not an out and out goal scorer. Miller and Wright will chip in no doubt and will probably score most of the goals but certainly not enough to make sure we are in pole position for the 3rd spot. My problem is with the other two forwards. I just can't see Mackie or Bebo comfortably getting in to double figures. C'est la Vie.

Mackie's done it at least twice before.  Can't see Bebo doing it though.

Jimmy praises Tommy

By Charlie Allan

Published: 18/07/2008

STRONG TARGET MAN: Tommy Wright.

More Pictures

DONS manager Jimmy Calderwood is convinced SPL defenders will hate facing up to new striker Tommy Wright.

The 23-year-old Darlington hitman will become Calderwood’s sixth signing of the summer later this month when he passes a club medical.

Wright will sign a three-year contract once he goes through the formality of the medical, which has been delayed because the player is recovering from a knee operation.

Calderwood assured the Red Army there will be no last minute hitches and promised them the six-footer will prove a handful for opponents.

“Tommy has to do the medical when he is fit but I don’t envisage any problems, it’s just a technicality,†said Calderwood.

“I’ve promised him I won’t even attempt to sign another striker, which shows how confident I am that there won’t be any last minute hitches.

“The lad is going to be a great signing for us because Scottish defenders will hate playing against him.

“Tommy is a strong target man and doesn’t get pushed about by any- one.

“When you add in Lee Miller and Darren Mackie, who aren’t exactly shy when it comes to getting wired in either, it means we have an abundance of forwards who relish the tougher side of the Scottish game.

“There will be occasions when we play all three in the same game and I’m sure the Dons fans will enjoy watching that.â€

Wright will continue his recovery in Darlington while the Dons are at their training camp in Holland.

Calderwood is happy the Dons board agreed to release the cash to land Wright and full-back Charlie Mulgrew, who was signed from Wolves for £50,000.

Calderwood said: “All credit to the board for doing it at a time when few of the clubs outwith the Old Firm are paying transfer fees.

“If they hadn’t agreed to let us pay fees we would have lost out on two very good players.

“It’s a statement of our intent to the supporters.

“They know there is no way we can pay fees like £500,000 for players, like the club did in the past.

“But the directors have proved their ambition by still releasing money to get in Charlie and Tommy and I certainly appreciate that.â€

Calderwood is now working on making more signings and hopes to have another deal concluded quickly.

A loan deal for Liverpool youngster Adam Hammill is understood to be one of the moves being discussed.

Calderwood said: “We will definitely sign one more but there could be two.

“We are in talks, but will only confirm things when we are ready.â€

Think all this is going to be dealt with once the team get back from NL.

Correct.  He's meeting up with JC when the team gets back from Holland.

Was in the paper this morning that he is flying up tomorrow to have a medical and that it is expected he will go straight into the squad

folk on MAD were saying this is because AFC couldn't get the required medical staff in. I.e. he's going to have a very stringent medical to ensure his knee will hold, personally, should this not be done with any player anyway?

New Don can be a hero just like me

Former Don Dean backs new hitman Wright

By Andrew Moir

Published: 05/08/2008

PITTODRIE legend Dean Windass today claimed strike target Tommy Wright can become a cult hero with the Red Army just like him.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood is on the verge of completing the signing of the Darlington hitman, who is expected in the Granite City for a stringent medical on Thursday as he recovers from knee trouble.

The powerfully built 23-year-old has even been compared to Windass, who signed for the Dons in December 1995 for £700,000.

And the man who fired Hull City into the English top flight with his stunning play-off winner over Bristol City is backing Jimmy Calderwood’s latest summer recruit to shine in the SPL.

“I’ve seen Tommy play for Darlington a few times before and he’s a nasty striker,†said Windass.

“The fans will love him because of his great attitude and real will to win.

“The defenders in Scotland will hate playing against him because he’s so hard to handle.

“He’s certainly not scared to mix it, and that type of approach will serve him well up there.

“The comparisons between us are obvious, and I just hope he does well for the Dons.

“I loved my time in Aberdeen and always try to make it up every summer for a return visit.

“I’m pretty confident Tommy will like life up there as well because it’s such a friendly place.

“He’s an extremely strong player who has the ability to hold off defenders.

“I’m sure he will be successful and it would be great if he could build up a rapport with the Aberdeen fans like I enjoyed.â€

Windass quit Pittodrie in July 1998 to return south to sign for Oxford United in a £400,000 deal which disappointed many Dons fans.

He cited several different reasons for his departure, including several run-ins with referees.

The 39-year-old has gone on to enjoy a successful career in England – and it’s far from finished yet.

He’s served Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.

His career turned full circle when he joined Hull last year – the club who rejected him as a kid in the late 1980s.

And Windass, who is looking forward to a return to the English Premier League, reckons a move north for Wright could help him become a star down south.

He added: “Moving up to Aberdeen really helped my career to take off.

“Suddenly I was a high profile figure in Scotland, and Tommy will also be under scrutiny.

“If he does well at Aberdeen then other clubs might take notice. He’s not that old but has already been at a few clubs, so he could do with a period of stability

“Guys like Russell Anderson, Michael Hart and Barry Nicholson have all done well at Aberdeen before winning big moves.

“Tommy will first want to break into the Aberdeen team and prove himself quickly.

“He’ll face a fight to win a place but I’m sure he’ll be ready for that.

“But he’s joining an ambitious club who’ll want to succeed in the new season.

“Celtic and Rangers always dominate the league, but there’s no reason why Aberdeen can’t finish third again or win one of the cup competitions.â€

Wright now faces a fight to prove his fitness after missing the bulk of Darlington’s pre-season schedule due to a knee problem.

He’ll now be handed an intensive training programme once he signs on as he bids to catch up with the rest of his new team-mates ahead of Saturday’s SPL opener with Inverness Caley.

A knee specialist? A second more informed opinion on something that cropped up in a routine medical.

This comes as a genuine surprise, it smacks of erm, the medics doing their jobs!  :o

Well, to be honest, its not like they don't get the practical experience at Pittodrie is it ;)
