Alan Burrows stepping down for family reasons

Aberdeen FC chief executive Alan Burrows is stepping down from the Club after three and a half years at the helm for family reasons.

Chairman Dave Cormack said: “It goes without saying that Alan leaves with our very best wishes. Personally, I’ve enjoyed working with Alan, who has been a lead-from-the-front chief executive and someone who has put his heart and soul into the role.

“The Club is in a much better commercial position because of his leadership. Thanks to Alan’s drive, determination and enthusiasm, we’ve made significant strides in many areas, most notably fan engagement, creating a stronger platform on which to build for the future.

“On behalf of the Board, I’d like to thank Alan for all his efforts and reiterate that he will always be welcome at Pittodrie.”

During Alan’s time at the Club, Aberdeen FC played in four consecutive cup semi-finals, recently reached a fifth, won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years, reached a League Cup final, finished third in the Scottish Premiership, and qualified for European group stages twice for the first time in almost two decades.

On the commercial side, the Club achieved a record number of season ticket sales in 2023/24, then broke that record in 2025/26, and delivered a 40% increase in commercial revenue.

Commenting on his time with the Dons, Alan said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being at Aberdeen and want to place on record my sincere thanks to Dave and the Board for giving me the opportunity to lead this great Club over the past three and a half years.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with a phenomenal group of staff, past and present, across Pittodrie and Cormack Park. Their achievements, on and off the pitch, are something I’m immensely proud to have been a part of. I want to thank each one of them for their hard work, determination, and willingness to innovate and embrace change.

“I’ve had so many fantastic memories, none more special than that unforgettable weekend of 24 May 2025 — that will live with me forever.

“Lastly, I want to thank the supporters and sponsors for the warmth and kindness they’ve shown to me and my family from the moment I arrived. Aberdeen is a brilliant city in a wonderful part of the world, and I’ll always look forward to returning.”

The Club will provide an update on the search for a new chief executive in due course.

Quite right too. Ricky Foster and Mark Kerr representing us at the Tennants Sixes, should be a sacking offense.

Can’t say I’m too fussed about Burrows going. I was genuinely delighted when he was appointed as he’d always got a good write up at Motherwell, but I have to say I think he’s been a disappointment.

While he will have undoubtedly played a part in the continuing improved commercial performance, that journey was well underway under Cormack.

The football side has continued to be a massive fail & he’s got to take his share of the blame for abysmal player recruitment, poor managerial appointments, & a flawed & incoherent football strategy.

I’d be going after the guy who took over from him at Motherwell, along with his backroom team. Well have come on leaps and bounds since Burrows left (coincidence?) and that guy seems to know how to pick a manager and construct a squad capable of playing to the managers formation and tactics - all on a fraction of our budget too.

He’s also left a few months after leading the charge to get his pal Robinson appointed here so that sticks in the craw a bit too.

Still, means Robinsons human shield at the club is gone, so no hiding place now Stevie boy…

I'm not sure the extent to which any of that can be laid at Burrows' door (or otherwise). I think the Motherwell stuff is entirely coincidental, they had a clear out of other board level folk after his departure which allowed a more forward thinking approach I believe. I don't imagine Burrows is particularly stuck in his ways, or a footballing dinosaur. To be honest, I'd think he'd be very open to leaving that side of things entirely to a footballing department, which was clearly the plan here. As for Robinson, that lies between Cormack and Lutz. It happened because Lutz both couldn't get his man, nor come up with a second choice. Being Burrows' mate was helpful, but he wasn't exactly a Glass appointment in that he has a breadth of good management experience, and that was clearly the biggest draw when pragmatism called them into action.

Interesting that he points out that he's looking forward to relocating to Aberdeen.

This whole thing is quite bizarre actually. Robinson said at the end of his interview with the beeb last night Burrows leaving had been a surprise to him yet we have already appointed his replacement within 24 hours.

Not unusual for an employee not to know the full picture of his employer is it? A CEO role will almost always require a quick departure, and I'm assuming that the board were expecting it and had already sounded out the replacement.

1 day is a hell of a turnaround though and it does seem surprising that Robinson wasn't in the loop. Also, i think it was Panda that mentioned there was a job advert that went up the other day that explicitly stated the role would involve working with Burrows. I wonder if this was planned for a future date but events have occurred that have meant Burrows had to leave sooner than expected.

Always thought was a 'Rugger'' man.

Was certainly a Tory, may even have stood for them, but I may have made that part up.

Surprised to see him rock up at the Dons.

I did hear a rumour that Burrows was away at the end of last season and sure I posted it on here, but must have kept it quiet for whatever reason and been working away on getting his replacement, before it was announced.

if being honest. I don't expect him to be here long.
