Article in this morning's Retard: JIMMY Calderwood sensationally quit Aberdeen last night - immediately after leading the club back into Europe. He summoned his players to a lounge in the Dick Donald Stand and revealed he is leaving by "mutual consent". But the decision was forced on the Dons boss by a board divided on whether he was the right man to take the club forward. And talks have already been opened with Mark McGhee of Motherwell who looks set to be announced as the new manager this week. Calderwood and his management team received a pay-off of more than £1million. A section of the Red Army never accepted Calderwood as a result of his boyhood allegiance to bitter rivals Rangers and he was repeatedly targeted on websites and phone-ins this season. The Scottish Cup defeat by Dunfermline intensified the pressure and the AFC Trust called on chairman Stewart Milne to sack him. Milne eventually bowed to that pressure and reached an agreement with Calderwood that it was in the best interests of both parties he should leave. After the win over Hibs, which clinched the last place available in the new Europa League, Calderwood said: "It's a sad day but Jimmy Nicholl, Sandy Clark and I felt unable to take this club any further. "This is all about the fans and when the board begins to doubt your methods it is time to go. "We leave with our heads held high because Aberdeen are in a much stronger situation than when we took over. "Relegation is no longer an issue, as it was before, and we have never been out the top six in the SPL. "We have come here and I think we have had a wonderful record, Jimmy, Sandy and I. "Probably outside the Old Firm people say that's not enough but you see the difference in terms of yesterday with Inverness going down after five teams had been battling to beat the drop right to the end. "Aberdeen are in Europe for a second time now so it's absolutely fabulous. We've a surplus in our transfer dealings and haven't had much money to spend so I'm proud of my record. "I will recharge the batteries over the summer but I still hope to stay in football." In a statement released on Aberdeen's website last night, football director Willie Miller praised Calderwood for turning the club around. He said: "I would like to thank Jimmy for the substantial contribution he made in stabilising things over the past five years, including qualifying for Europe today. "When he arrived there was a massive rebuilding task required and subsequently we have seen the fruits of their efforts with regular top-six finishes. "While the absence of a domestic cup continues to be a source of frustration to everyone at the club they can be proud of what they have achieved."
