  1. The Livi example is fine Rico if you are happy with your team parking the bus which Livi do quite a lot. They have had so many one nils or been beaten by the odd goal and only managing a couple of shots at the opponents goal. Our fans would just not accept it if we set up to play that way. Regardless of formation and approach, I blame the players. If you play with five defenders you should not be giving anyone 36 shots at goal if you are doing your job. I just think we cannot defend properly and in most league games we can get away with it because the opponents are mince but when we come up against proper teams we get found out.
  2. "It's quick risky but it's fun to watch" These geeks are great entertainment with their tactics boards but the game is played on grass and there is way too much analysing goes on nowadays. The Dons let the opposition have 36 attempts at goal on Saturday, did we have 1 on target, I think? People who think that the reason for the thrashing was that we did not change to a back four for example, are just deluded. Going with a back four would probably have meant one/maybe two changes to the starting line up so at least nine of them would have been the same players. The result would have been exactly the same. We were not beaten because of a tactical masterclass by Bronkhorse nor because of the system our team played, their players are just better than ours and also on the day we were rubbish. We've won at Ibrox about twice in the last 30 odd years and we must have tried every formation and every system. Other than Celtic, every team has a horrendous record at Ibrox as it is a David v Goliath job each time you face them. It's not because of tactics it is because they sign international players and we sign players from england's league two.
  3. There is an awful lot of emphasis placed on formations by fans but for me it comes down to how good your players are and how good the opposing players are. Playing five at the back does not necessarily make it more defensive nor does one up front. There were times when the great Barcelona teams played with no recognised striker but they were certainly not negative in their approach. We have a good team of SPL standard players and when playing a Motherwell or St Mirren we look like a decent side. Problem is the same players are nowhere near the calibre of the old firm players yet as fans we expect them to be. You can get away with doing certain things against poorer teams and still win, against the better teams you can’t. As was said before, we gifted a massive number of chances to Hearts and Motherwell but they did not take them but a better side did yesterday. We will still likely be in the shake up for third but yesterday was a huge reality check. Goodwin’s comment about third being the minimum requirement was just foolish and naïve. With the greatest will in the world, third is the best you can expect with the gulf in resources there is in our league.
  4. Playing five at the back is fine when you are up against two strikers or up against one of the league's shitey teams but I think the risk of doing this against The Rangers is that we will have three centre halves marking one striker and could get massively overrun in the middle of the park. If you look at the last couple of league games, even though we have won them, Motherwell got in 12 attempts on goal, Hearts had 13. We have to be better than that on Saturday or we'll get beaten.
  5. I'm not buying this Rangers in crisis thing with Van Bronkhorse being under pressure. They have dropped 7 points out of 33 in the league this season with 3 of those against Celtic. The European defeats have been against 3 really good teams that you would expect them to lose against most times. This is going to be a big test and I think the fan in the street is sometimes naive as to how big a task it is to win in Glasgow. To put it in context, The Rangers have not lost in 6 home league games this season, they lost 1 of 19 home games last season, zero of 19 the year before, and 2 of 14 in the covid season. Overall that's 3 losses in their last 58 home league games. Compare that to our away record and we have won 15 of our last 59.
  6. On the VAR thing I don’t know why they waste time during the game getting the ref to look at the monitor. If he misses something, the guy in his lug should just be saying you need to give a penalty or number 6 needs to be sent off. Doing it that way also takes the heat off the ref a bit. In the old days, if the linesman told the ref he saw a foul and the player should be sent off he would have just done it so not sure why he can’t just take the word of the video ref.
  7. Amazing the amount of chances Miovski and Lopes have missed this season despite the good number of goals they have actually scored. That’s not meant as a criticism like, just that I can see us running up quite a few fours and fives this season against the shitey teams when it all clicks for them.
  8. You're right about cheap, Rico and the cost was not what I was particularly trying to emphasise and probably used the wrong word there albeit with both McKenna and Ramsay, their replacements did not cost nearly as much as those individuals were sold for. What I was meaning was the ability to just acquire a ready made replacement who can fit in seamlessly. In other industries, people leave jobs and in most cases you hire someone with the right CV and things go on as before but fitba is different which was what I was really getting at and I think Cormack believes the same thing should happen in the fitba world. I don't believe he appreciates enough that we have only managed to produce a handful of real quality young players in the last 30 years and there is not an endless conveyer belt of them.
  9. Situations like this concern me that Cormack may be a good businessman but he does not properly appreciate how the football world and the business world differ. I get the impression he thinks when he manages to sell a player for big money that he has achieved his goal and he can just replace the outgoing player with a cheaper version and things will keep ticking through. We have seen after the sale of McKenna how many crap centre halves we have gone through since he departed that it is not that easy and now we are seeing the same issue at right back after Ramsay's departure. If you keep selling your best players eventually it will catch up with you. There is a big argument for keeping Barron whether he signs his contract or not. Looking at the bigger picture, he is out of contract in summer 2024 so if he stays fit he could play another 60? games between now and then which really could be the difference between bottom six football or Europa Conference group stage football which overall could be more beneficial than cashing in for a couple of million in January.
  10. Gerrard - 37 league games (Won 12, Drew 8, Lost 17) Goodwin so far - 22 league games (Won 7, Drawn 6, Lost 9) Interesting comparison.
  11. It’s a good post SeeBass and have to say, I have also lost interest a wee bit these last couple of years for a variety of reasons. I will say I think Cormack’s heart is in the right place by wanting to bring in investment to his boyhood club both from himself and externally. Problem with this for me is the soul of the club gets diluted as we are losing the local touch somewhat. The same has happened in many clubs where foreign investment has come in and I guess I am guilty of living in the past too much in that respect. We now have a team largely comprising non-Scottish players and what I would call non-dons people in the background. Not suggesting that everyone that works for the club should be a dons supporter but when you look at how clubs like Bayern and Ajax keep a core of their ex-players at the heart of the club, it makes it still feel like your club, if that makes sense. I guess the fact that of late we had several players, and a manager and chairman, who were constants at the club for many years meant you built up some kind of affinity with them. Losing two of our best young Scottish players in McKenna and Ramsay recently further disconnects the team from the fans, for me. I’ll always be a Dons supporter but struggling to get excited about the Cormack years.
  12. Ended up 1-0 to Ireland so the Scotland World Cup dream is over. I have not watched a lot of Women’s games in the past but it struck me last night that the game would be much better played on a smaller pitch with slightly smaller goal posts. Last night’s match reminded me of watching a schoolboy game on a full size pitch in that there were spaces all over the place. It takes the women longer to cover the same ground so the game moves more slowly. It got me thinking that in golf, women play to the same rules but because of physical differences they play a shorter golf course with clubs that are slightly lighter and have thinner grips but in football we are making absolutely no adjustments for the differences in the physical abilities between men and women. In the men’s game goalies are generally well over 6ft tall so why put a 5ft 8 woman in the same size goals? The Scotland games would also have a much better atmosphere at a packed club ground and give the women a much better home advantage as well. Hampden last night was very empty and did nothing to provide the best atmosphere for a big game.
  13. Watching the womens Scotland v Ireland World Cup play off. Ireland have the longest throw in taker I have ever seen, what a weapon. Causing the Scottish defence all sorts of problems.
  14. Spain scotland norway georgia cyprus
  15. Fair comment manc_don but it was naive at best by Goodwin. If one of his players had been sent off and banned after a second booking for taking his shirt off after scoring a goal, Goodwin would have been fuming and his own comments are like the manager's equivalent of that action. The thing that really riles me about this particular incident is that it was arguable whether or not a penalty should have been given, it was not clean cut, not a blatant dive. Goodwin was just trying to blame someone else for his poor management on the day. It's a school boy error and he has just cost his team having a manager on the side lines for 8 games. If I was his chairman, I would be laying the blame well and truly at Goodwin's door rather than at the SFA's.
  16. Would love to see them both in the same team BigAl with Trent playing in more of a right midfield role where Ramsay could cover for his defensive deficiencies.
  17. Media appear to be wetting their pants about how many goals this guy will score and seem to have assumed he will continue at the same rate for the next ten years. Looks a real handful but will teams eventually work out how to play against him? The only time I can remember someone scoring goals at the same rate was Marco Negri who scored 23 goals in his first 10 league games but “only” managed 32 by the end of the season.
  18. I hope we get another crack at Croatia after we made an arse of the first attempt last summer.
  19. I was thinking the same thing last night BigAl. Says a lot when our third choice left back is the Celtic first choice left back. I think Hickey may have jumped ahead of Patterson in the right back queue after the last couple of games. Ramsay has a real task on his hands to get anywhere near that Scotland team.
  20. Whoa! So out we have Robertson, Tierney, Cooper, McKenna, Hanley, Souttar, Patterson, McTominay, Dykes, Adams Craig Levein's 4-6-0 might be an option after all although we might be struggling to find a back 4 at this rate.
  21. The media love their stats don’t they. I hate England with a passion but if you look at their recent form it is really not all that bad. They’ve lost a couple of games to Hungary and one to Italy. Apart from that they have been pretty faultless since the last World Cup. Southgate has arguably been England’s best manager in my lifetime, just missing out on a World Cup final and losing the Euros on a penalty kick. He’s transformed the mentality of their side totally and even with their blip in form they are bound to be there or thereabouts when the medals are being dished out in Qatar. They will always have a chance if they can keep Kane fit in my opinion.
  22. Far be it for me to question the tactical nous of Sir Stevie but why are we calling up a left back and a centre half to replace a right back and a midfielder? Is the grand plan to combat the Irish right winger to play three left backs?
  23. Hate using the word luck but I think we were genuinely unlucky with how the play off panned out. Our team was absolutely flying when that play off was meant to take place and by the time it did happen some players were out of form and some, Robertson, McGregor etc were just totally knackered from the amount of games they had played last season. Also it was a funny atmosphere to play fitba in that night. Last night was fantastic. Seems to be a really good spirit in the camp, they are all playing for each other and the manager. If this had been a previous regime, Ryan Fraser would not have wanted to come back and secondly, the manager would not have taken him back. His international career would have been over like so many before him who have taken the huff. Once again, Stuart Armstrong, what a difference he makes. Get him on that team sheet every time.
  24. Not a royalist in any shape nor form but this is clearly a big deal to a lot of people. My initial thought was that, like you Rico, it was more of an english thing but the queues at the cathedral in Edinburgh last week suggests otherwise. That aside and whatever you think of the monarchy, it saddens me that some people would feel the need to make an arse of themselves and shout abuse during the minutes silence or the playing of god save the queen/king. Says a lot about people if they cannot stand quietly for two minutes of their life without acting like a dick. I get the impression many non fitba followers think fitba fans are arseholes and these kind of things don’t do much to help.
  25. The cynical side of me would suggest that if that had been a Dons player it would have been ruled out for high feet
