manc_don Posted July 21 Report Posted July 21 Nix followed on from Sydney by beating Wrexham in the third of their down under friendly games. A largely academy based team beat them 1-0, be interesting to see how the next raft of nix youth develop and where they end up. Wrexham just signed arguably my favourite kiwi left back (also a nix graduate), who’s been plying his trade with empoli. Unfortunately it was too close to this game so he couldn’t make an appearance at his home stadium. I’d have loved us to sign him before we’d signed mcgarry but oh well, he’s now well and truly out of our reach. Quote
Reekie_Red Posted Friday at 23:26 Report Posted Friday at 23:26 Im still scratching my head at the massive popularity of Wrexham. Yeah theyre owned by Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds, the latter not exactly the finest of humans, but its not as if either of them will be on the field like a Messi or a David Goldenballs type spectacle. Yet a team like the Nix who normally command around 8,000 fans per home game suddenly attract 25,000 punters for a friendly. Has anyone told these folks that its Wrexham??? Quote

Joys of tv I guess, they’re highly visible and kiwis get fomo. Sydney had an even bigger crowd for them, but yeah, as you say, it’s Wrexham. That also being said, it’s not like we get northern hemisphere teams down here, least of a championship side. Quote
tom_widdows Posted Saturday at 14:33 Report Posted Saturday at 14:33 Similar thing happened with Bristol Bears Women's Rugby team when they signed an american sevens player who has almost 4 million tiktok followers. Ive no idea if she is any good but Bristol ended up shifting some home games to Ashton Gate due to ticket demand. Given the shit Wrexham got themselves into in the last 20 years i say good on them. Far cry from the season I went to see them play a few home games where they had Darren Ferguson in the team. Think I even got to see David Rowson play against them for Stoke 1 Quote

Welcome to Wrexham is really well done, the producers have done a masterful job of getting people invested in the fate of the club and the team have provided some excellent moments to help them sell it. He was quite handy for us around 1999/2000. Mind you, he was a shining light in an otherwise horrific team - ie he was bang-average Quote
