That's not to say he wouldn't have gone if a club south of the border came in for him.

 

He was applying for/putting feelers out for certain jobs in England that were available. Iirc this included the Birmingham and Wigan jobs.

To be fair I think the reason the board gave him a big deal was on the assumption some English club would be mad enough to take him.
