Jimmy set for triple swoop

Jimmy set for triple swoop

Maybury deal dead

THE Dons are confident they will have three new signings on board before Saturday’s SPL clash with St Mirren.

Manager Jimmy Calderwood confirmed his transfer dealings are set to go into overdrive in the wake of their 1-0 CIS League Cup victory over Ayr United at Somerset Park.

“We will make signings before the St Mirren game,†he said.

“Hopefully it will be three in total by then.â€

One of the additions will be a right-back, but it will not be Alan Maybury, who had expressed an interest in returning to Pittodrie.

When asked the latest news on Maybury’s situation, Calderwood replied: “Nothing will be happening with him now.

“I’ve spoken to him a few times and offered him a contract.

“But I also warned Maybury we had a few other things going on as well.

“He wanted to keep his options open, which is his right, but I told him he had to make a decision quickly.

“I phoned him for one last time and told him I had the chance to get somebody else in.â€

Maybury, who spent the final six months of last season on loan to the Dons from Leicester City, had stated he was keen to return to Scotland.

But he blew it by taking too long to make his mind up on a deal.

Calderwood said:

“I asked Maybury to get back by a certain deadline.

“He didn’t, so we will now sign the other guy instead.â€

Calderwood was asked if the mystery defender is Dutchman Quido Lanzaat, who was on trial with the Pittodrie club last week.

“You will have to wait and see,†he said.

The Dons boss was then asked if it would be a permanent or loan deal and whether the player was young or experienced.

Calderwood said: “It will be a loan deal and he is youngish.

“I will tell you when I’m good and ready, but he will definitely be in by Saturday.

“We are just waiting to get the details finalised, but I don’t want to say too much until the players have had medicals and signed on the dotted line.â€

The trio would take the list of new signings made by Calderwood since the end of last season to nine.

I take it this means Landzaat isn't coming to Aberdeen.

Hope the lad does well enough to merit an extension on his loan.

Not necessarily so GD, given fact Landzatt can play as central defender as well. What it does say however is nae way back for Maybury

Any news on Northsound this morning to suggest other signing/signings going to be announced later today ?

At least we don't have to worry about him anymore. Really didn't know what to make of the rumours. Great in the first few games then dire in the rest. Oh well Welcome aboard anyway!

Nothing as yet except still confident 1 signing today but other in doubt.  But "we have other targets".

Considine for 4 years looks like OK business. I think he might be a decent player in the future when he cuts out errors in his game

Jimmy: Foster is still first choice

Hodgkiss faces first team fight

By Charlie Allan

RICHARD Foster was today reassured he is still the first choice right-back at Pittodrie.

The Dons have signed West Brom’s Jared Hodgkiss on loan until January, but Foster will retain the right-back slot for tomorrow’s SPL clash with St Mirren at Love Street.

And manager Jimmy Calderwood admitted there is a chance new boy Hodgkiss could spend the next six months stuck on the bench if Foster maintains his good form.

Calderwood said: “Foster has nothing to worry about.

“He was our best man at Ayr the other night and has been doing a marvellous job at right-back.

“If Foster keeps up his good form between now and Christmas the new lad might find his contract has run out and he has never played a game.

“The pressure is more on Hodgkiss to prove he is good enough to get in.

“We need cover in every position, which is why I went for Hodgkiss.

“His arrival also means we have the option to move Foster to cover other positions if we have injuries or suspensions.â€

Hodgkiss, 21, is the first player Calderwood has signed without actually seeing him in action first.

The Dons boss pushed the deal through on the recommendations of Baggies boss Tony Mowbray and Gus MacPherson, his opposing manager in Paisley tomorrow.

Calderwood said: “It’s the first I’ve ever done that, but it’s not a problem.

“I trust Tony and also got good reports about the lad from other people whose views I value, including Gus, who was raving about the lad after watching him play last season.

“When you are going about with the begging bowl there are times when you have to place trust in others.

“I couldn’t see the lad because West Brom didn’t have any games.

“I’m happy Tony has helped us out and I’m sure the lad will do well.

“Hodgkiss showing great excitement the moment the idea of a move to Pittodrie was put to him helped sway me as well.

“He had actually agreed to go to Hereford but knocked them back as soon as I confirmed we were happy to give him a chance.â€

Skipper Scott Severin is doubtful for the St Mirren game because of a foot injury.

Zander Diamond is out with a thigh strain, but the Dons have Lee Miller back after suspension.

He really can't complain about finances if this season goes tits up, when hes wasting wages on bench warmers.

I would expect he is saying that out of loyalty to foster, he may see it as harsh dropping him as soon as a proper right back is signed. Bit like when diamond came back from injury, jimmy said the current defensive partnership hadnt performed badly so they would keep their places

I suppose but better still would have been to say nothing, then he's not putting Foster down or the new boy. Hardly doing Toadies confidence any good being told he will hardly play.

Either that or he will be trying extra hard to get in the team, i fully expect the "flying in training" quote to be dusted off anytime soon!

If this dude does end up being another Dan Smith then JC should hang his head.

Yes we do need cover but bringing in a loan signing from the Premiership should be with a view to actually playing him, rather than an idle threat to keep Foster playing averagely.

Into that add the fact we haven't signed a centre back yet to replace Anderson (1 year on!) and over 7 months later no right back permanently signed.

That's why we're signing Scott Wilson from Dunfermline this afternoon

I hope you don't share sources with stoney.

On the contrary, I hope that he does.  :-\

Now that I've thought about it, I hope he does too.

Dont worry we wont need wilson when we sign bamba!

Do you think it'll be that Ayr boy Ryan Stevenson?

Didnt get to see the game on Wednesday but apparently he had a stinker. Do we really need another midfielder though?

2 more signings before 3pm tomorrow?????? Any update?

Doubt it will be him as he was quoted in the papers saying ayr wouldnt want to let him leave for nothing

Is he worth spending money on?

He'll probably end up another Ricky Gillies

Dont worry we wont need wilson when we sign bamba!

I have bona fide proof their signatures are done and dusted.
