Motherwell v Aberdeen

Unless AI decides that now is the time to wipe out humanity (fingers crossed), the tired Dons will be sleepwalking through another 90 minutes, this time at Fir Park in Motherwell. The action, such as it is, takes place on Tuesday 15th at 7:45 pm.

I fancy a comfortable 3-0 home win.

  • Fantastic performance tonight, played like a proper football team. Olusanya set the tone by chasing down everything, and keeping us in it at times, and they started to get a little edgy passing it out

Didn’t see the game, just watched the highlights. Some lovely goals, and I can’t help feel for molloy in particular, plus Ronan, great for their confidence. Mouloua clearly doesn’t lack confidence, excellent goal, and interesting he runs straight to Robinson for the big hug. Would love to see him start alongside nisbet. Not the pace or physicality of olusanya, but certainly strong and speedy, and far superior skill level (not hard I know). I think he’s a legit player and scorer now he’s fit.

How was Marshall? Is tonight, with the exception of mouloua for olusanya, and maybe happe for molloy, our best 11? I certainly think 3-5-2 is the way forward.

Saturday is huge against a team with 6 consecutive home losses. A win would finish a massive week for Robinson, and us, and send us to the break with form and confidence. then we return to two very winnable home games, crappy united away, and falkirk at home to finish the month. Things could look a lot different by that point. But we certainly are far from a good, consistent, or predictable side.

Our system and formation was the perfect antidote to Motherwell's attempts to pass through us. The way we pressed them at times; the two front men, and Marshall and Ronan behind them - was exceptional and didn't allow Motherwell to play.

They got a bit of joy for a period in the first half when it was still 0-0 when I thought Aremu was playing too deep and offering up too much space for them to play, and they were also targeting Molloy and Guinness-Walker and getting in behind regularly by overloading on that side. However, what was impressive was how quickly we sorted it out.

Ronan was excellent, but I think Knoester pushed him close for man of the match, and actually I'll accept I was wrong to say he'd be better on the left. The way he linked everything in the middle was outstanding.

As @Jormungandr pointed out, Guinness-Walker at times was centre midfield while Cadden was hitting the byline. Motherwell didn't know what to do.

And as @The.Moog said, when we got the ball down and played we are a far better side. Played the long ball at the right moments (Ronan's pass for Mouloua's goal for example) but we have players capable of playing in wee triangles and pulling players out of position.

During the day I saw on X someone posting a video of us beating Motherwell at Pittodrie two years ago, and the caption was saying our team is night and day compared to then. Have to say, some of us (including me) have underestimated how good some of our players are.

Your last paragraph is interesting. Up until a week ago pretty sure most of us were saying we were a team full of shit. Just posted it, a win Saturday would be massive. Confidence and positivity going into the international break where we can recover from three away games plus do some training. We did as needed in the league cup group stage, then you can’t argue it was a tough run of games to start the league. Now a more favorable run, some wins, team now familiar with each other, maybe it’s not so bad? Then again, we’re equally capable of shitting the bed Saturday. Big game.

Was gutted to not be able to watch this one today, but fortunately managed to continue my boy’s indoctrination of all things red as they were able to watch before school. Just madness, did not see this coming and have to tip my hat to Robinson et al. They played an absolute blinder and nullified one of the best footballing sides in the league, away from home. Scoring a goal was mad enough but scoring 4 and winning away? I’d forgotten what winning away was like! I’ve watched the highlights probably a dozen of times, each goal is good in their own right.

Onwards and upwards hopefully, plenty to build on the back of the last two games.

Just watched the highlights and what a brilliant win. Not often we get to say that in recent years, especially with away games.

Always did say I liked the look of Mouloua and he just needed a goal to settle him. Well, the penalty on Saturday helped and what a finish for his goal last night. Hopefully he and Nisbet can form a partnership. Marshall didn't do his chances of more game time any harm either, which has to be a plus.

Be nice for a change, for us to rid a team of their manager, especially at Easter Road. Gray kept his job, due to that draw against us two seasons ago and be nice to finish him off this weekend, IF he survives the next few days.

I thoroughly enjoyed that last night, despite the M74 being shut, being sent onto the M8 with lane closures, then onto the M77 which was shut before having to go down the A82 with more lane closures

That was simply excellent.

Once we settled down after the opening spell, we absolutely bossed it. Forget possession stats, we nullified everything they wanted to do and took full advantage of the opportunities our setup created.

System, formation, tactics, personnel all worked a treat. The right players, in the right positions, in the right setup following the right game plan, it worked perfectly.

They all seemed to understand exactly what their role was so full credit to Robinson, that was top notch last night.

Press, aggression, appetite, energy, solid defence, hard working midfield (thought young Marshall was really good, lot to work on but a great prospect) and clinical up front.

As others have said, we need to build on this on Saturday, but that’s fair put down a marker for this squad as to what they are capable of doing and the rest of the league as to the fact we might not be the pushovers they thought we’d be.

Very well done all. COYR…

That you just home now then 🤔

well well well (no un intended) I never seen that result coming at all. But will take it with the feet firmly on the ground and nae getting carried away. But credit where credit, decent all round performance no real weak links.
Once we got eh fist goal and a cracker it was too, well done Malloy. Once that went in we seemed to move up a couple of gears and 4 zip was a fair result and a true reflection.
Can't agree with the BBC given Mouloua the MOTM award for a 20 minute appearance. Aye he was good when he came on and took his goal very well, will be a great boost of confidence for him.
For me Captain Kev was our man of the match once again but there was a lot of decent candidates for that accolade in red shirts last night
Long may it continue

COYR

Better, I'll give you that. The first 30mins was painful long ball, but once that stopped we seemed to play some actual football.

Kneoster was a welcome return, and we seem to have built a Dons team that is the footballing embodiment of Doric philosophy -- we are noticeably more comfortable when we aren't Happe.

It's a fan vote. You can vote for MOTM during the game. Aimed at younger fans.

Scott Brown used to win the MOTM award every week at Aberdeen because Celtic fans voted on it.
