The Brown Ultimatum

Craig Brown has been Aberdeen manager for about 2 years now.  He is 72 years old and he wont go on forever.  His contract is up very soon and Stewart Milne has been cagey about his thoughts as to offering a new one.

Aberdeen FC have played some good football this season without really hitting the heights that some might say they deserve; 7 wins (only 3 at home) and 25 goals in 20 league games is not scintillating form.

He has steadied the ship after the McGhee debacle, he has made us harder to beat.  Everything is relative though.  The team that Jimmy Calderwood had finish in fourth and qualify for Europe was unquestionably in decline, but was nowhere near as bad as what it became under McGhee, with similar personnel.  McGhee turned that team to shit.  It would be interesting to see what Craig Brown would've done with that team, which was undeniably better than the one he eventually got from McGhee.

What I'm ultimately driving at is - has Brown actually improved us so greatly that he deserves a new contract at his time of life?  Whilst I am certain that we wont finish in as poor a position this season as we have for the past three, we are currently as close to the bottom of the league as we are to the top, and also only 2 points clear of the 9th place we finished in for the past 3 seasons.

Unless we round the year off with a cup win or a 2nd place finish, I think it makes sense for the board to let Brown go at the end of the season in favour of a younger man.

Why not tlg? Just out of curiosity? He's a cup winner, something which cannot be said about previous candidates.

Sorry Manc just spotted this.

True he did win the league cup but it I can't help but suspect Mowbray should get more credit than Collins for that.  He just seems to fall out with everyone he works with, and has managerial experience about 2 years long.  He never came across well to me as a manager and  I would much rather have the guy who has taken the lowest budgeted side in the spl to 4th in the league

Aye time for Broon to go IMHO. Once again, AFC fans are being made a mockery off because once again, we're calling for a manager to go. This game has gotten very boring very quickly. If we were still in the mix for a top six/4th/5th place, I would have advocated Broon to stay for another year but the atrocious form from before Christmas has made my mind up. Ok, it's still possible, after all there's still only two points between us and 6th place Hibs! However, I have completely lost faith that AFC will get their arses into gear. Absolutely zero form, terrible football, many of our players seem to have forgotten how to play football, dwindling crowds, pumped oot of two cups, once again bright prospects choosing to jump ship at the earliest opportunity and an all too familiar, apathetic feel to AFC.

However, there's again a lack of outstanding candidates. Just like when we replaced Calderwood with McGhee. Just like when we replaced McGhee with Broon. Can the board not think outside the box? Who gives a flying fuck if he has knowledge of Scottish football? It's hardly La Liga or the Bundesliga! It doesn't matter whether you have a knowledge of Scottish football or not, that doesn't make a good manager. I don't buy into the idea of Derek Adams, he's done well with County but IMO, a lot of it is the right man at the right club. He's got a well run, small club punching above it's weight but that certainly doesn't gurantee you success at another club. We would be appointing Adams on the back of one very good season at County.

100% certain not to be manager next year.  His house was put up for sale this week.

This. any half decent manager could be successful up here.

Does he still live at Kepplestone?

I was of the understanding he didn't own his house there (instead owned by SM himself), but that may have changed.

Bit daft to buy a house when you get the aberdeen gig unless you plan on renting it out pretty soon afterwards.

edit- BTR got in there first with what I was thinking... but was much less sarcastic in his tone. -1.

Aye SM does own the property, I'm under the impression Brown still lives there though.

Could well be nothing and he's looking for his own place, only passing on what I've been told!
