ABERDEEN FC boss Mark McGhee is confident Lee Miller will keep the goals coming now that he has broken his scoring duck.

Striker Miller bagged his first goal since May when he netted in Aberdeen FC’s 1-1 draw with Hearts at Pittodrie.

McGhee believes that goal will give Miller a massive lift ahead of Saturday’s clash with Dundee United.

McGhee said: “It’s a massive psychological boost for Lee.â€

Hopefully it will get his arse in gear!

McGhee in today's P&J

Don’t mention Dons goals dearth

aberdeen’s paltry league scoring return becoming embarrassing but McGHEE HAS SEEN IMPROVEMENT

Aberdeen’s goalscoring record in the Scottish Premier League this season is becoming a source of embarrassment.

Only bottom-placed Falkirk have scored fewer than the Dons’ miserly return of three home goals in five matches. On the road, matters are not much better with only the Bairns, Kilmarnock and Hamilton finding the net fewer times than Mark McGhee’s team.

Defender Charlie Mulgrew is the Dons’ leading scorer with two league goals and forwards Chris Maguire, Lee Miller and Sone Aluko have scored one SPL goal each.

Despite the paltry returns, and a seventh-place berth in the SPL, manager McGhee is confident the goals will come if his team stays true to its attacking principles.

McGhee scored 100 goals for the Dons in 250 appearances and has told his attacking players now is the time to show courage.

Aberdeen travel to third-place Hibs on Saturday, six points behind the best of the rest and with a vastly inferior goal difference.

McGhee said: “You have heard it 100 times but the most important thing is we create chances. We have to keep training, practising, encouraging and keep asking them to get into the positions.

“Young Fraser Fyvie missed one chance on Saturday against Dundee United but he cannot bottle it and not go in for the chance again. He has to have the courage to go in on goal and not be frightened to miss.

“All we can do is create chances and eventually players such as Lee Miller will start to take them. It would be a lot more worrying, as it was a few weeks ago, when we were not creating chances.â€

Despite the lowly league position and the exit from the League Cup at the hands of First Division leaders Dundee, McGhee remains bullish that his team is on the rise.

He said: “I still think we have made progress in the last few games. From Ibrox to Kilmarnock, then Hearts and Dundee United, I have seen an improvement.

“I know goals change games and had we got the first one against Dundee United last Saturday it would have been a totally different match.

“We didn’t and we lost the match 2-0.

“But we have to take our chances when we are in charge of games – be that in the first or the last 10 minutes.â€

If we are running on stats then here is another.

Last season after 11 games we had 14 points.

This season after 11 games we have 14 points.

I'm glad we blew several hundreds of thousands of pounds on compensation then, that makes it all worthwhile.

At least there'll be no more cup humiliations.  ;)

ABERDEEN FC boss Mark McGhee today backed his team to finally get back among the goals.

Aberdeen FC have netted only 10 times in the 12 SPL games played so far this season.

But McGhee is convinced they will eventually give someone a thrashing because they are creating so many chances.

And he admitted he would love it if it’s Rangers who suffered in tomorrow’s clash at Pittodrie.

McGhee said: “Someone is going to end up getting a right doing.â€
