Speculation and mathematics time

So, it must be time do the 'how its going to pan out' thread again ? I reckon:

Tues, May 12

Dons 2 Hearts 0

Celtic 3 UTD 1

Table

Hearts 54 GD -2

UTD 53 GD +2

Dons 52 GD +3

Sat, May 16

Huns 2 Dons 0

Hearts 1 UTD 1

Table

Hearts 55 GD -2

UTD 54 GD +2

Dons 52 GD +1

Sun, May 24

Dons 3 Hibs 0

Celtic 2 Hearts 1

UTD 2 Huns 2

Final table

Dons 55 GD +4

UTD 55 GD +2

Hearts 55 GD -3

I think it will end very close but we will sneak 3rd. If the Hearts v UTD game is to end in a winner then hopefully it will be UTD and we get 4th ahead of the Jambos.

No.

Last time we fully deserved to be 3rd having been out in front for most of the pack, not dropping points to the Huns the whole season and notching up last minute wins and draws.

This year we've been up and down, struggled to win games, drawn far too often and not looked like contenders.

If we slip into Europe via the backdoor then I think we'll get shown up because 4th or 5th place in our league simply just isn't good enough to compete.

Well 5th certainly isn't.

Lets face it, if you can't beat United or Hearts over a season then you're not that good are you?

Does that mean we're not that bad then?

If we finish in a european place its on merit.  Thats the way leagues work.  It will not change the fact that we have been pretty stinking this season and to still be in with a shout for the euro places, can even be argued quite well placed given the fxtures, shows that its not only aberdeen that have been poor

Where did this extra Euro place come from?

Did we nab it from another country that's been underperforming or have they expanded the league to take in more teams?

What extra place?

The extra place for the fair play league probably.

That's the 6th place for Scotland isn't it.  Since when did we have 5?

We finished 4th last season but never had any European football.  This year if we finish 4th we do.

That says there's an extra space to me.

Europa League expansion I guess.

"extra"

It was there all along, it was known as the inter-toto spot, but nobody ever bothered to enter, that's why the 4th place team has to go into the 2nd qualifying round at the end of july (unless Rangers win the scottish cup, then the 4th place team goes into the 3rd qualifying round)

Aye ok.

Never take an interest in the Intertoto so I never realised they'd done away with it.

I don't think anybody did. I cuoldn't name any team that's ever won it?

I think three teams qualified from it. Wasn't exactly a cup competition as such.

Correct.

I'm fairly sure Newcastle 'won' it on one occasion.

I think i'm correct in saying that Seville qualified for the UEFA Cup through it and then won it?

Or something along those lines, I can't really be bothered looking it up tbh

Sevilla never qualified through the InterToto - and no team ever went all the way from IT to UEFA winners - Bordeaux came closest in 1995 when they lost in the final. Newcastle actually did 'win' it in 2006, by getting furthest in the UEFA cup proper.

Interesting Intertoto fact: The competition was started in the early sixties as a way to play competitive football in the summer - so that betting could continued year-round. UEFA only took over administration of the tournament in 1995.

We're fucked.

We'll finish 5th.

Time for a change of management.

I'd really like to have the belief to take you to task on that, but afraid in the cold light of day, finding it increasingly difficult to think anyway other than that. Still far from convinced that Dingus is the answer to our prayers.

Dingus certainly isn't the answer, though it does appear a fair few fans seem to think so. Can't say I see the evidence for this apart from his red history.

I am at a loss to be honest, got no idea who I want in.

It was indeed what I said to Sharpie's mate in the pub on Sunday. I genuinely have no idea who can do a better job than JC, though I don't think JC can do anymore at the club and I know that I wouldn't want any other SPL manager in  :-\

Yeah, i definitely want JC out. Only problem is that he may be rather hard to shift. He's not going to get the call from the Championship he craves (let's face it, if Burnley were happy to go for Owen Coyle ahead of him, it looks as though that ship has sailed as far as JC is concerned) and the best he could hope for is someone like Norwich who have recently been relegated but Bryan Gunn is still there bizarrely.  He's also hit his ceiling in Scotland.  Let's hope he has some decency and does the honourable thing and walks away... i'm not holding my breath though.
