Did Trump really shite himself in the oval office?
-
That's something that's always intrigued me about the States. From the outside looking in, it appears very bottom line motivated. Now you can say that's the same all over, to an extent it is. In the UK, plenty of those who have done OK in the Thatcherite and post-Thatcherite landscape have been 'fuck you jack' at the things happening elsewhere. And in the UK we've elected some obnoxious, educationally sub-normal, wrong-uns. But, over here I think even the majority of the Daily Mail crowd would've drawn the line at Trump's performative nastiness and certainly the noncing. A more minor example can be found in the sporting world, Duane Chambers and Julian Eddleman. Both banned for PEDs, both came back to their sport. Chambers routinely booed and something of a pariah, Edelman went on to be Superbowl MVP with little comment.

Oh, I don't think anyone would ever say 'Trump is to blame'. The States, like the UK, has suffered for generations under right-wing, short-termist, free market socio-economic models. These models need poverty to function. Generation on generation poverty leads to a sizable disenfranchised percentage of the population. Because society is so completely under right-wing control, they can misdirect elsewhere. They're hardly going to say 'yeah our policies have fucked you up but deal with it cos enough of us are doing OK'. They need a distraction. Immigration, 'woke' minorities....all fair game. This creates the environment for self-serving grifters to attain power. It's happening all over and the genie's too far out of the bottle to stop it. In the States, factor in the obsession with their particular non-Christian version of Christianity.......

I think if - 1) His obviously failing health holds up; and 2) He manages to stop/cheat-in the mid-terms; then he is. How much damage he does between now and then is the scary part.
-
I think he is unhinged, yes. But he has a ...... cunning/instinct that is seeing him survive. His main thought is always for himself, in terms of the grift, it's the narcissistic way. 'What's good for me is good for everyone'. The money he's making, and the scale of the corruption in so doing, is astounding. His greatest triumph is getting sufficient Americans to buy into the concept that he has a strategy beyond 'more power and money for me'. His performative cruelty is simply to play to his fanbase. I guess enough right-wing (is there any other kind?) Americans, beyond the slavering MAGA extremists, are happy enough to justify/overlook his antics if they get a few crumbs dropping off the table in their direction.

I suppose it would be a boring world if our moral compasses all pointed in the same direction.

I agree Trump is a symptom rather than cause. There is a sizeable number of folk Stateside who buy into the racist, misogynist stuff and couldn't give a toss about the crimes he commits. Tge issue is, he gives a focal point for these dreg types to congregate behind. I think he loses in 2016 he doesn't run again. Yeah the dregs are still there, but less mobilised.

Sports mixtures 'nae blacks' was the recognised norm. The licorice eens were nae enjoyed.

Must win by any means.

I'd go back further. When the Dems decided NOT to run Biden but went Hilary. I'm convinced Biden wins in 2016 and the Trump cult is abated. Biden wins again in 20, we're not in the abyss we are now.
-
I really wish it wasn't. I really wish Rapey's antics could be teated like all the other dictatorial, third world failing states. Sadly the UK in all its post-Thatcherite, post-brexit vulnerability, has chosen to tie its excerable economic future almost exclusively to this basket case. That's why it is news over here.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/25/alex-pretti-killing-nra-pro-gun-groups?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other Could this be the start of the turning point? NRA turning is interesting, if the right-wing religious nutters turn.....
-
Probably not, but thanks for the edgy take. It's good to know what the tabloid-fodder are believing.

It's interesting (and a little scary) to read Orlanndo's take on things. He seems a reasonable person, so I'm guessing the stuff he's saying is a not uncommon opinion Stateside. The Americans I've communicated with have a different take. Hugely different. They do not see any positives in the Trump presidency and tend to see it as the same abomination as those of us outwith America. They are pinning everything on the mid-terms and the Dems getting control of both houses. Then there will be at least an attempt at checks and balances. If the elections go ahead fairly, their take is that this is inevitable. Through online groups, I've spoken with a number of folk from Minneapolis/Minnesota. They're certainly seeing no positives from this carry-on, they're living a dystopian nightmare. I think in terms of the longer term picture, the UK has to be less dependent on the U.S. democracy has been proven so fragile there it has to be considered a failing state. Brexit is daily being shown as the disasterous folly it was, on SUCH a wide variety of levels. The UK is more vulnerable than ever. What a time to be alive. Thank fuck I'll be deid or lang.

This is a fucking disgusting, tone deaf, tinpot, shite move. Learned fuck all from the Scales and Christie ("we very nearly signed him though") debacles. I fucking hate fitba.
-
What do you do when you have to go without attention? Is that when the voices start?
-
That'll be the EDGY take then.
-
I'm sure a Derek Stillie howler was instrumental in our comeback. One of their goals first half was an obvious hand ball by that Fernandez.
-
The mid terms.... Happening? Not happening? 2026 could be the most dangerous year ever.
-
I recall watching Mitch Bavidge cutting his teeth at Stoney Juniors before heading to the Highland League. Played in the Hive team that got to the last 16 of the Scottish before getting knocked out by eventual runners-up Linlithgow Rose......73-ish?

I'm still unconvinced that connect 4 boy will be raselickbyrawaybutbigman manager by the time we kick off tomorrow.

I don't think I've read a post on this thread espousing communism. But feel free to point them out? As regards the broader point, I'd hesitate to go down Mason's road of tarring a couple of generations with the same brush. I think (confess I'm nae sure) that I'm just about a Boomer (born 63?). I think there's a lot of utter cunts in my generation. Equally there's a lot of us who never bought into the short-termism of Thatcherism. I dinna have Mason's global faith in the younger generations. Yes, there's some dinna buy into the reactionary populism but many more do. Far beyond that.....apathy. I think the genie is too far oota the bottle, I think the world is fucked, I think there are people born now who will see the end of the world. Yer Trumps and Farages (as well as all the far-right populists in Europe) are nae the drivers, they're the grifters taking advantage. Capitalism has fucked the economy globally. There's generation on generation disenfranchisement, nae cash to spend on interventionist, societal support and proper re-education so the cycle continues. Each generation another round of cannon fodder. I hope Mason's right but I think we're a' fucked.

The most incredible thing about this is.....it's not incredible. We're all screwed.

Was it not about this time last year 'that' Hibs game happened? That was the start of a honking run......JT, I don't think, survives another honking run as such a run could see us back in relegation country.
