The Broadhill bar is set to be turned into a £1 million restaurant and coffee facility.

Aberdeen businessman Alan Massie has taken over the city’s Broadhill Bar. Mr Massie wants to turn the property, which has lain empty since 2011, into a facility which will appeal to golfers and members of the public.

The site on Golf Road would have a restaurant and coffee shop, and a terrace looking on to the King’s Links golf course.

And Mr Massie today said he hopes to lodge a planning application for the site as early as January.

He said: “I’m hopeful of using the facility in conjunction with the golf course and the driving range.

“It has been empty for a number of years and we would be delighted to offer this kind of service to the public.”

Members of the city council’s property sub-committee voted in favour of the development ahead of five other rival bidders during a private meeting.

The bids included one from the Northern, Caledonian and Bon Accord golf clubs, businesses that announced plans to amalgamate and form a new organisation this month.

  2. I went along to this yesterday; Shankland's goal was an absolute cracker, superb first time hit on the volley from just outside the box.  Shankland looks a good few levels above his team mates and looks more than ready for the first team; great first touch, good strength and movement.

It's the first time i've seen this group together and obviously caught them on an off day. Hamilton were streets ahead of us and I was extremely impressed with them - a lot of nice one touch passing at pace, our lads were chasing shadows, frankly. Their two centre backs were superb and their striker, Brophy, was excellent.

The only other Don who got pass marks (just) was Gibbons. He looked to switch the play a lot and has a good range of passing. He was also very vocal and led the team like a captain, but unfortunately he was pissing against the wind as his colleagues were not up to his standard on the day.

Cheers min, do you think the pitch had anything to do with it?

  3. Finances could eventually force Hearts to move from Tynecastle Stadium, owner Ann Budge has admitted.

The Edinburgh businesswoman has been speaking in depth for the first time since her summer takeover.

Budge explained that one of her priorities was to patch up parts of the stadium in a state of disrepair.

"But we've got to be realistic and it might be that it's a more cost-effective solution to actually move," she told BBC Scotland.

"Tynecastle does have something magical about it. If there was some way we could actually do something with the stand, it might be that that would be the better option and I know a lot of people would prefer to stay in Tynecastle.

"But, right now, I have no idea what the answer is and I think I would hope that, by the end of my time here, at the very least, we will have a plan that's been properly evaluated through and try to choose the right one for the club."

Moving to a new stadium had been mooted by previous administrations because it was deemed difficult to expand at the present location near the city centre.

"It's been neglected for a long time," said Budge. "There's an awful lot needs to be doing to it.

  4. Football fans have pledged to applaud a north-east schoolboy at an upcoming match after he died following an accident on the A90.

Bobby Douglas was a fervent fan of Aberdeen FC, and could often be seen at Pittodrie cheering on his favourite team.

The 11-year-old was killed when he was run over by a van on the A90 near Newtonhill on Friday.

A group of Dons supporters clubs now plan to stand up and applaud in the 11th minute of the game against Hamilton Academical on December 6 in tribute the youngster.

A spokesman for Aberdeen FC said the football club would welcome the gesture.

He added: “As far as I understand the wee man was a big Aberdeen fan, so the club would obviously be very supportive of any move the fans put forward to pay tribute.”

Since 2007 Rangers & Celtic have received £3m from Glasgow City Council for community project and anti-sectarian projects

  7. Summit’s attempt to mount a new version of 1986’s action fantasy Highlander has been through the development wringer, with multiple script drafts and several directors attached before dropping off. The studio is hoping to give the film a kick up the casting chain, eyeing Tom Cruise to take over the mentor role originally played by Sean Connery.
  8. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former Rangers owner Craig Whyte after he failed to attend a High Court hearing.

The 43-year-old had previously been warned he faced jail following his decision not to appear previously in a case brought against him by Ticketus.

The case was due to be heard on Thursday at the High Court in London but Whyte and his legal team failed to attend, leading to Mr Justice Newey issuing the warrant for his arrest.

Attempts had been made previously to contact the ex-Rangers chief to no avail, with Mr Justice Arnold issuing a "suspended committal order" back in October warning him against a future non-appearance.

The businessman has now failed to appear at hearings related to the case on four occasions.

The poster was used in December 1907 to advertise an Aberdeenshire Cup tie between the Dons and Buckie Thistle at Pittodrie.

It was found tucked away at Buckie’s Victoria Park, and was brought to the attention of the AFC Heritage Trust, who have gathered an impressive collection of club memorabilia.

Buckie agreed to allow the Dons to have the poster, which was in poor condition, restored.

It’s believed the poster was designed by famous London artist Frank Dadd, who became well known for his classic advertising posters, particular during World War 1.

The work of renewal was painstakingly carried out by the Scottish Conservation Studio near Edinburgh.

This involved bathing the poster in special fluids to remove acids and stains.

Many small pieces of the poster had to be captured during this process and carefully placed – in jigsaw puzzle-style – in their positions on the poster as it was reassembled in one piece.

The final stage was to mount the restored poster in an acid free mount ready for framing.

The poster is now on display at Pittodrie’s Black and Gold Lounge, alongside other material from the early 1900s.

Buckie Thistle are to be presented with a limited edition print of the poster.

Dons fans will also have the chance to purchase copies to help cover the costs of the restoration.

As for the actual match, the Dons won that 3-0, despite fielding a mainly reserve side.

It also kicked off at 2.20pm to allow it to be finished in daylight.
