Oscar Pistorius shoots and kills girlfriend

South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been arrested over the fatal shooting of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home, local media say.

 

Police said they have charged a 26-year-old man with murder, but did not confirm it was Mr Pistorius.

 

The precise circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear. Reports say he may have mistaken her for a burglar.

 

Mr Pistorius, 26, is known as the "blade runner", and was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics.

 

The suspect is expected to appear at Pretoria Magistrates' Court later on Thursday, police said.

 

They also confirmed that a woman had been shot dead at the home of Oscar Pistorius and that she was a friend of the athlete.

 

Police added that there had been previous incidents at the address and described them as "allegations of a domestic nature".

 

Reeva Steenkamp's publicist confirmed to the BBC that the 30-year-old model had died.

 

"Everyone who knew her is in tears. She was an absolute angel, the sweetest, sweetest human being, a kind human being," Sarit Tomlinson said.

 

The news that Mr Pistorius may have killed his girlfriend will shock the country as the athlete is regarded as one of South Africa's national icons, reports the BBC's Peter Biles from Cape Town

• Oscar Pistorius has given his account of the night his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp died at his house in Pretoria. In a statement read out by his lawyer, the Paralympic and Olympic star said the two were in bed asleep on Wednesday night when he got up and went to the balcony to close a sliding door and get a fan. He heard a noise in the bathroom and assumed it was an intruder, he said. Feeling vulnerable without his prosthetic legs, he got his gun and shot through the door, he said. He then saw that Steenkamp was not in bed, he said. He broke the bathroom door down with a cricket bat, he said; Steenkamp was still alive but died in his arms. He denied that he had murdered her, saying nothing could be further from the truth.

 

• The prosecution gave a different version of events. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Pistorius got up from bed, put on his prosthetic legs, armed himself, walked seven metres to the toilet door and shot Steenkamp four times; three of the shots killed her. Even if he thought she was a burglar, it was still premeditated murder, Nel said. But he asked why a burglar would lock himself in the toilet.

 

Not sure what to make of this story.  Helluva tragedy if he has accidentally killed her but surely he would have noticed she wasn't in bed before firing shots into the bathroom door?

The first thing you'd check is if your partner was still in bed because that's the first person you'd think it would be making a noise in the bathroom. Lock the cunt up.

He either went to the balcony unaided by his prosthetic legs, or his defence have made a mess of things with that statement.
