CRAIG BROWN hopes Stephen Hughes will be back in time for next week’s Scottish Cup replay at Motherwell.

The Aberdeen midfielder has been out for a month with ankle and knee injuries but is back in training and is pushing to be fit to face his former club on Tuesday.

It would be a welcome boost for the Dons as Hughes was starting to rediscover the form he showed during his spells at Rangers, Motherwell and Norwich.

The Scotland cap struggled when he arrived in January but had missed most of the first half of last season after leaving Norwich.

Before he got injured, the 30-year-old was reaping the benefit of a full pre-season and Brown is keen to get the playmaker back in his side.

And the Dons boss was also quick to scotch rumours that Hughes could be on his way next month.

Record Sport understands Hughes has a get-out clause in his contract which can be activated in January. But Brown said: “I fully expect Hughes to be here.

We tried to sign hughes a few times over the past few seasons and he was always reluctant to move this far north.  The clause is probably something to do with that.  He seems pretty happy though and playing well so cant see him exercising it anytime soon

Sounds like Clark could be out for the season: Note this is from the retard, but still, why was he not scanned comprehensively immediately?!? I'm not a physio but surely this should be standard procedure?

ABERDEEN midfielder Chris Clark fears his season may be over after trying to play with a broken leg.

The 32-year-old suffered a heavy knock in the 3-2 defeat to Inverness Caley Thistle last month but was determined to fight for the cause – only to discover he had suffered a fractured ankle.

He eventually had to go off but even resumed training last week before further examination discovered the damage was far worse than first feared.

The ex-Plymouth playmaker, who is in his second spell at Pittodrie, now faces months on the sidelines and could be out for the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to Record Sport Clark said: “I knew it was a sore one when it happened but I didn’t know how bad.

“I got up and ran across for the ball at the touchline and at that point I realised there was something seriously wrong.

I didn’t think it was a break though. I thought it was just a bad gash. In fact only last week I started running again but it still wasn’t right and it was only after I went for another scan they realised I had chipped some of the bone around the ankle.

“It’s pretty bad and they can’t tell me how long I can expect to be out. It’s frustrating because I was in the side and we were doing well.

“We could have gone top of the league that night and it’s frustrating to be on the sidelines watching when you can’t help the lads.

“There’s not much I can do. I just need to work hard to try to get back as soon as possible.”

Dons boss Craig Brown is gutted to lose another player to long-term injury.

Ryan Jack is several weeks away from a return from a broken ankle and Rob Milson is no closer to making his first start of the season.

Aberdeen took the option in Gary Naysmith’s contract to keep the veteran defender until the end of the season but he is still struggling with a calf problem.

Brown is hoping to have Stephen Hughes and Isaac Osbourne back to face Dundee tomorrow as the Dons look to bounce back from their 4-1 mauling at Motherwell.

The boss said: “It looks like Chris is facing a considerable spell out, it could be for the rest of the season.

“It’s another huge blow. We are thin on the ground for midfielders and we are limping towards the break.

“But Hughes and Osbourne might give us a boost this weekend and we are looking to atone for the Motherwell game.”

Gavin Rae, meanwhile, insists Jekyll & Hyde Aberdeen must find the consistency to stop their season nosediving. They haven’t won back to back games in almost three months.

The Reds went into their Boxing Day clash at Fir Park on a high after a convincing win against St Johnstone.

But the Pittodrie men were brought crashing back down to earth with a thumping at the hands of the Steelmen.

Midfielder Rae said: “We were disappointed not to build on our win against St Johnstone last weekend against Motherwell.

“It’s weird because we played so well and then didn’t play well on Boxing Day. It’s hard to put your finger on why that is.

“There’s nothing we can do but get on with it. We’ve got a game coming up against Dundee so we need to try and put it right.

“It’s strange how these things happen, where you go from playing well to losing like we did on Wednesday.

“In the end there could have been a lot of goals for both sides and unfortunately we conceded more than we scored. It’s very disappointing.”

Ryan Jack broke his leg in October? That's news to me.

Still, though. Good to see that despite Considine's that our injury crisis seems to be easing a little bit.

Shhh dont tell the physios! Great news that Jack is nearing recovery, seems like an age ago since he was able to play. Hopefully Milsom will be back for good this time round.

was interested to see brown banging on about our physios being the best in the country on redweb. get the impression fans' rumblings have been heard at the club and he felt the need to address people's concerns.

Were our physios not involved in the Scotland set up for years?

I'd have thought that if they were as shite as they're rumoured to be they wouldn't be anywhere near the Scotland set up...

Aye because the SFA have a history of inspired appointments...

MIDFIELDER Rob Milsom was today training with Premier League side Fulham in a bid to start his first game for Aberdeen FC in more than a year.

Milsom has not started a competitive match since January 2012.

The 26-year-old is battling back having undergone knee surgery three times in the last year. Now Milsom is in contention to start for Aberdeen FC against Inverness Caley Thistle on January 19 after the winter break.

ABERDEEN FC were today boosted by the news midfielder Isaac Osbourne could face Inverness at the weekend.

Tough tackling Osbourne has missed nine league and Scottish Cup matches since suffering a hamstring injury in Aberdeen FC’s 1-0 SPL win over Hibs in November.

He was poised to return to full training today and is on course to feature in Saturday’s SPL clash with Inverness Caley Thistle.

ABERDEEN FC today confirmed they will have to pursue a top six spot without midfielder Isaac Osbourne.

The Englishman suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of Aberdeen FC’s 1-0 SPL victory over Dundee at Pittodrie on Friday night.

Osbourne was due to have the injury scanned today, but manager Craig Brown admitted he’s already ruled Osbourne out of their next two SPL matches, away to Kilmarnock and at home to Ross County.
