DT Politics Thread

Seems ConDems have crashed down south as expected with Labour making pretty big gains.

Be interesting to see how things pan out in Scotland but presumably given it is STV there won't be any councils where a party has overall control.  Apparently heading for the lowest turnout in years up here but then you'd hardly know there was an election on where I stay.  No posters or billboards and I only got one leaflet through my door which was Tory, which is bizarre given in my ward I'd imagine they'd do well to get even 4th on 1st preference never mind get anywhere near a seat.

Don't suppose it means much so far away from a GE but already had Tory MPs demanding Callmedave is more right wing after UKIP success in the south and comedy figure Lebit Opik demanding Nick Clegg resigns as leader of the Lib Dems (but seemingly stay on as Deputy PM).

Also glad to see that so far nobody has voted in favour of Mayors in various English cities. Total waste of time and money and nothing more than a celebrity driven ego trip (see B. Johnston and K. Livingston)

For the avoidance of doubt and to calm existing DT users nerves, poor Donsdafts passing was nothing to do with Mason.

It didn't get that heated.

Ha that’s a shame, never knew he was of that opinion, but I don’t think this thread wasn’t about when he used to post here.

Funnily enough, one thing me and donsdaft were in complete agreement on, was our dislike of Kenny McLean

Im starting to warm to him :)

Has anyone gained from the budget?

I work in oil and was hoping for a bit of good news, but sadly nothing.

I reckon I'll be out of a job soon.

Can see Aberdeen really suffering in the coming years. I don't remember seeing the industry this quiet in my years working in it and have seen a few slumps.

Is there much transition to alternative energy technologies happening in ABZ?

There’s plenty of it happening with technologies that are easily transferable (e.g. ROVs). Less so on drilling, production equipment, etc.

Companies doing subsea construction, inspection, maintenance, etc, are likely to be coping a lot better than the traditional O&G service companies.

Although even then everyone is struggling as the wind market is in the toilet also. A lot of the investment in offshore wind comes from oil companies trying to (or appearing to try to) diversify into clean energies but there seems to be a reluctance to invest more if the returns from oil production is drying up or being heavily taxed.

Next 6 months are going to be grim for the city.

Aye, 2026 is going to be a grim year.

Yesterdays budget will likely see a huge amount of jobs lost in the coming months.

A lot of renewable companies are in England and the central belt in Scotland, as Aberdeen took their eye off the ball and didn't diversify quick enough.

Oil was always going to end, but didn't think it would be so quick and sudden.

it will become very apparent, very quickly, that this is going to be a disaster for Aberdeen, but the UK will still be importing oil & gas from other countries for years to come.

A bit like what we did with coal back in the 80s.

I'm so glad I steered my sons away from the industry, althought it will be more than just oil workers that will suffer.

GB Energy to save the day.

The reporting on this Sandie Peggie case is wild. I’m not sure she understands the judgement - she’s an arsehole

Just don't read it. I don't know who she is. I have a vague idea, I think, but could be way wrong and feel that looking her up would put me in a worse position than not knowing who she is. I do like her name though, it feels like it should be a rhyming slang, or a euphemism for a sex act.

They’ll like the dressing up more than the politics. It’s the same as the Aberdeen stop the boats mob. Trying to be edgy & looking absolutely tragic

I’ll worry about it more if they’re still doing it in their 20s.

The one that hangs about the Aberdeen lot is especially weird. They’ll work that out soon enough

There is more than one of them.

I just recently discovered who one is, who sits amongst the Ultras.

No surprises that these same guys are part of the protectors of the nation brigade, outside the asylum hotels.

Sad behaviour and for the watching.

I was taking the piss out of @Mason89's assertion that everything will be fine once the boomers are gone. It's very clear they are teenagers.

You were supposed to imagine a group of baby boomers in the image instead.

To me that pic is no different from a Reform Party event, other than the fact the purple rinse mob at those things are waaay more dangerous

America pretty much owns Europe and the UK. There is very little Starmer or any of them can do in this situation, as they aren't dealing with a rational regime.

We won't even have the sense to take steps now that would stop this sort of shyte happening in the future. We are too wedded to the US and will always believe Russia and China are the real menace.

There’s plenty of options that could be done. Doing nothing isn’t one of them.

Name one thing or more, that Starmer could have done that would have made a difference to this nonsense?

Was that him who said "I couldn't give Aberdeen a penalty because I would have had to send Barry Ferguson off"?

As if sending that wee rat-faced chump off is a contravention of the Laws of the Game.

Yep, the very one.

I Would go along with that.

The yanks are very precious about their flags. Remember when Sinead O'connor burnt one on stage many years ago?

Still wouldn't change anything sadly.

Keith is only thinking on how to keep the 'special  relationship', special.

America can take Greenland tomorrow and fuck all the UK or the UK can do about it.

Doing nothing is always a good option. The PM should try it more often, then he wouldn't make a mess of everything.
