CHARLIE Mulgrew was all smiles as he held his new Hoops strip up with pride after making a comeback to his boyhood heroes. The defender, who made his way through the youth ranks at Celtic, was unveiled as the club’s first summer signing this afternoon and will wear the No.21 jersey next season. He left the Hoops in 2006 after four years and moved to Wolves as a part exchange for Lee Naylor. But injuries hampered most of his time in England and he moved to Aberdeen in 2008. The Scotland under-21 left-back is overjoyed at his return to the club where he began his career and admits that despite interest from Sheffield United, there was only one answer when Lennon called him. “Growing up a Celtic fan this is a dream come true and when I got the call there was only one place I was going,” he told Channel 67 in an exclusive interview. “When I left I thought that was it, it’s not very often a player comes back but I’m delighted to be here. “I’ve matured as a person and I’ve improved in all areas of my game as a player. It’s maybe taken a couple of set-backs in my career to be the person I am now, but I feel I’m definitely a better player and person now.” Mulgrew left the club four seasons ago after failing to break into the first team but now at 24-years-old, he is ready to fight for his place in the starting XI on the back of some vital experience. “Obviously it’s a massive club and it will be hard to get into the team,” he said. “But it’s up to me to work hard, improve over pre-season and show I’m good enough to play here. It’s a great club and there are great players here so it’s going to be hard. “But I was down in England for three years and I got a feel for what it was like down there which has made me a better player. “I’ve had a couple of set-backs (Aberdeen FC?) but I’ve always believed in myself and I think that shows now that I’m back. I’ve always believed in my ability, I’m determined and I work hard. “I don’t like to look back to the past, it’s all about the future now. A club the size of this will always be tough, you need to prove yourself every single day but I know that and I look to do that.”

He was never the "Club Captain" in a million years. I also think that AFC at the end of the day wanted shot of him as well, and as such that was why there was no room for negotiation, as they knew he wouldn't accept. A mediocre player a most and I'm sure that there is better out there, who would be privileged to play for the Dons! Good riddance.

FORMER MANAGER SMITH: PITTODRIE CLUB CAN’T MOVE FORWARD UNTIL THE FINANCIAL SHACKLES ARE LIFTED BY MICHAEL GANNON Published: 19/05/2010 Progress at Pittodrie is a pipedream unless Aberdeen can find a way of removing the £9million millstone from around the club’s neck, according to former Dons manager Alex Smith. The Falkirk assistant manager, who was a League and Scottish Cup winner and Premier Division runner-up during his four years at the helm at Pittodrie until 1992, is watching with interest the ramifications of former director Jim Cummings’s powerful challenge of the club’s board in the Press and Journal today. Cummings, the Dons largest single shareholder, wants fresh investment and input into the club through a new share rights issue. Smith believes the Dons need revitalisation but he insists the Reds need to free themselves from the financial shackles if they are to fulfil their potential. He said: “Aberdeen will struggle to move forward while they are burdened with the debt. “It is a noose around their neck. Aberdeen should be competing to bring the best players in the country to Pittodrie but, with the debt, they are unable to do so. They are competing in the same market as teams in the bottom six and when you do that, the chances are that is where you will end up. It is not for me to tell Stewart Milne what to do with his money, especially in the current climate. But it does seem to me the club needs to be revitalised. “Aberdeen is a vibrant city, even during these difficult times, but the club seems to be stagnating, or even going backwards. There seems to be a malaise at the club and there needs to be some sort of injection. “The Scottish Cup final must have made painful viewing for them on Saturday. Ross County took 20,000 supporters from the Highland, there were 30,000 from Tayside for Dundee United. “Aberdeen could easily get those kinds of numbers and then some. “The catchment area is huge in the north-east. “I hope the business community in Aberdeen realises just how important a football club is to the entire wellbeing of the area. “When the club was winning trophies in the 1980s the whole city was more upbeat. “People went to their work happier and there was an entirely different atmosphere. “There are a lot of wealthy people in the area, you can barely move for Chelsea Tractors in the town centre, and it would be interesting to see if any of them would be willing to put something back into the city. “Aberdeen is in the enviable situation of being a one-club city. The potential is enormous but they are just drifting at the moment. It is all very well talking about a 25,000-seater stadium but there were only 6,000 at the last game of the season.” Smith is convinced the current climate in the SPL is ripe for a challenge of the superiority of the Old Firm. Champions Rangers are in financial dire straits, while Celtic are facing constraints after failing to win back the title. Smith believes a club of Aberdeen’s stature should be aiming higher than just a top-six finish. He said: “It is almost like the situation we witnessed in the early 1980s when the Old Firm were vulnerable. “They have over-extended themselves in the last decade and the environment is ripe for another club, or clubs, to challenge them again. Dundee United and Hibs showed promise for long spells of the season before it went awry towards the end. “The Old Firm are not going to be as dominant as they were and Aberdeen should be one of the clubs ready to capitalise. “Aberdeen are a massive club and people should not be dampening expectations. “There are some clubs who have unrealistic expectations but Aberdeen is not one of them. Finishing sixth is at least four places lower than they should be aiming for.”

I meant to add last night that i didn't witness any of the items highlighted below. Did anyone else? The atmosphere was considerably more abrasive at Pittodrie where Aberdeen found themselves in deep trouble in front of their own fans – who made their feelings known vociferously when Dundee United took a two-goal lead within 25 minutes. Both goals were scored by Jon Daly as the Tannadice side threatened to go on the rampage. Daly's first strike exposed indecision between Charlie Mulgrew and Zander Diamond and their hesitation ushered the burly forward in for a powerful drive past Jamie Langfield. Daly doubled his tally from a free kick wide on the right when he met Danny Swanson's delivery with a powerful header. This turn of events triggered vitriolic abuse directed by some Dons fans at the Aberdeen, manager, Mark McGhee. However, his players responded and when Mulgrew produced a typically accurate free kick into the box for Diamond to plant a firm header beyond Dusan Pernis. Aberdeen made it 2-2 when Sean Dillon, who gave away a penalty against Rangers in the Active Nation Scottish Cup quarter-final last Sunday, pushed Stuart Duff to concede another, from which Michael Paton made no mistake.
