I don’t accept that. I think perspective is a factor- a back up keeper, a new right back who hasn’t played there before for us, a new defender who has been here maybe a month and joins a team in total turmoil, a central defender who has been here days and severely lacks match fitness, a left back we don’t know what the fuck is going on, a young right mid very low in confidence whose only been here a few months, a center mid badly needing a long break/summer, another center mid finally being given a regular starting role, a new left mid we have no clue if he’s any good, a number 10 who has just returned from a long term injury, and a 9 with zero confidence and who knows his replacement has just been signed. A team who hasn’t won a league game since early November, a team who hasn’t scored in numerous games, and who is hemorrhaging goals. We won 3-0. zero negatives if you ask me, many positives from today but certainly not perfect. We’re a squad who needed completely overhauled and it’s happening mid season, we’re not far off third in the league, and in the QFs of the cup. Not a bad season all things considered.

We are not talking about a back up right back though, we are talking about a player who can play multiple positions, that’s been our ongoing issue. Someone even referenced dom ball in recent weeks prior to jensen’s arrival. We shoehorned Milne into that role, mcgarry couldn’t play more than one position, and we’ve cried out repeatedly for a right/left back to provide competition/cover. Think Jensen is getting unfair criticism. again, who in Scotland would have been as good/a better signing?
-
Who could we have picked up in Scotland??
-
Morris has zero courage. Plays well when there is no pressure but far too often hides. Found form when all was good but has disappeared far too much. A summer punt if you ask me. Oklels plays every week to see if he’s worth buying. we needed a Jensen. And it costs as that type is hard to find. He’s not going to dominate any position and may come off the bench when others are on form, but he’ll do a job in multiple positions when needed. Like topi, he’ll step up and graft when needed, plus to be fair, is learning the Scottish game and has been thrown in at the deep end. we have new players, players back from injury, players trying to find form, and our 9 not yet available. Based on today I’m optimistic.
-
Agree on this and that has to be the plan moving forward. Much like the whole team, we’ve got to stop with the endless chopping and changing for the most part, stick with palaversa and play the fresher of the old guys. back 4, we’ve got three full back, give devlin a game or two more rest then play to form. Central two shouldn’t change unless injury. Attacking 3 from today should start weekly. New 9.
-
I’ll take that. Shutout too. Don’t agree with Steve Tosh, who thought was overly critical, given our form dunfermline came here with nothing to lose and had a go. We won, shutout, and got goals. Lots of changes and newer players, work in progress. Jensen and topi did well, nice for gueye to get a goal. Palaversa is a weekly starter if you ask me. thoughts on central defense??
-
Good for kev. The other chance was a little too far out, and a tight angle, that will help his confidence.
-
I can do that. Perhaps there’s hope for me as an Aberdeen 9 after all.
-
I think IF we did form this attacking 3 with the new 9 could be a handful.
-
And I’m liking Jensen too, works his balls off and doesn’t hide either. With confidence and form I think he comes good. good goal and good play from topi with the assist.
-
Disagree, despite form and confidence keskinen works his balls off. Doesn’t hide like Morris for example. Once he gets a goal I think he’ll turn form around.
-
Happy with that, devlin needs rested plus I do think we’ll see palaversa and shinnie/sivert in the middle moving forward. Really looking forward to topi jeppe and gueye developing an understanding. Keen to see how this back 4 plays, would also be nice to see an attacking and contributing Mackenzie again, been a while. optimistic about today. 4-1 us. topi, okkels, gueye, and nisbet. any idea when mitov is back?
-
I’d say his best position is a free roaming 10. He’s our top scorer too, would rather have him central receiving crosses from topi and co rather than us having the big hole in the middle with little punch. he’s unpredictable, strong, and a decent dribbler, he’ll be effective plus playing him at 10 gives our wide guys more time and space getting forward. He’ll suck defenders in. Nisbet at 9 until we have our new boy available, plus topi Jeppe and gueye can all interchange. I think we play those three as our attackers behind a 9 and give them a good few games to develop chemistry and understanding.
-
Did we sign two lefties today??
-
Was going to say similar, it’s admin hour now. Really hope duk is gone, Ambrose out on loan, and uneken in.
-
Did we get the PSV kid?
-
Leftie??
-
Duncan Ferguson is available. Not to manage, stick him up top. Nobody fears us and we have no forward, hope to fuck we bringing someone capable in the next 48 hours who has clear ability and presence. We cannot sign more of the same as I said before, has to be proven that he's better than nisbet sokler or Ambrose, I do believe miovski was already an internationalist when he came here. We don’t need a project or kid, said it before when we were stuck, Simon Murray sounds appealing again! As crushed as I’d be with that as our last minute signing, I’d take him over another unknown, or a foreigner who rarely plays or scores.
-
Until we have a legit 9, being an attacking threat will be hard. Lots of fannying around but no killer in the middle fearing opponents. We’re pretty much playing w 10 and no center forward. Buying/loaning another Ambrose nisbet or sokler won’t help either and playing gueye at 9 who is clearly not a 9 doesn’t work either.
-
I’d say it’s our best 11 at present. If Mackenzie sorts himself out then he comes back in, mitov when healthy, and gueye slides to 10 when we sign a legit center forward. At half time would like to see Jensen move to right and Mackenzie given a run. Devlin hasn’t attacked nearly as much of late, I think he’s running on empty. COYR!
-
Absolutely no clue what to expect. Would really like to see gueye ahead of shinnie and palaversa, with nisbet at 9. actually think with gueye mobile around him and nisbet being purely a penalty box player, they could potentially work well together. Also eager to see okkels, I thought he showed some really nice touches at times last week. Think Topi is due a break and a goal too. 2-1 us, topi and gueye.
-
Lazetic is an odd one, how do you impress as a forward without scoring or assisting? What scout recommended this guy?
-
Surviving! I wanted Campbell before we signed palaversa, so between sivert shinnie palaversa and polvara, I don’t think Campbell raises our level. I actually think we need a creative 10 to fill the space between the holding mids and forward, and I think gueye could be that guy. If we do insist on signing a central midfielder I’d be good with the Dundee lad. With Mikey Johnson up top.

Winning...for now. The Northeast Optimism Records thread.

Replying to this window being about needs not being addressed. We don’t know that, we may have targets we cannot get until summer for example, and rather spend on less or a loan, we wait. We also may have signed Jensen as a player who plays multiple positions, including competition for devlin, even center mid, but he’s started left back for a reason. Perhaps dorrington is good enough for now? I think it’s also a little harsh judging a 19 yr old so quickly, plus I think he rolled his ankle on Saturday but played on which may have affected things. think we sometimes blow the left footer argument out of proportion at times. Think mcleish and miller were both right footed, rougvie was right I think. Cooper Simpson bell, later on bett all right. Different times and different game then I know. If you are good enough it doesn’t matter though, is blaming right or left foot a cop out for a bigger issue ie not good enough? Or do we expect instant perfection in a team in both transition and turmoil. not addressing immediate needs immediately suggests bigger picture and signing when available. Also suggest long term for JT who may wait for targets until the summer? -
Apologies in advance, worst thing I’ve said in a very long time. I want the Huns to win today. Makes me sick saying that. we really want rangers and Celtic to win consistently now, and it’s back to the almost seasonal battle for third. As bad as our form is, and I do expect it to change, Huns win and we are two points off 3rd and 4 ahead of fifth. Given the shit of last year, that’s ok. I do expect Dundee utd to lose form, their decent run will end. We step up and bob’s your uncle. Yeah, I’m an optimist. But as bad as our run is, it’s been a ton of personnel change coinciding with injuries and form, I expect this to settle and us improve again.
