swaddon Posted April 24 Report Posted April 24 I watched McCartney: The Hunt for the Lost Bass film on iPlayer last night. It's basically a story of how he lost his Hofner bass guitar in the 1970s and got it back recently, but the story takes some twists and turns along the way. It's a fascinating documentary. Quote
TheDonbytheDee Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 The new series of Football Icons on the BBC iPlayer. Henrik Larsson Davie Cooper Gary McAllister Some Wifie Chick Young A very mixed bag to say the least. Larsson was an excellent player at a higher level than Scotland too. Davie Cooper - was he THAT good? Seen him play from mid 80s onwards, never thought he was special. McAllister I really only remember from Scotland games, so couldn't say, but was never that impressed. Chick Young being an icon is a strange one Quote
swaddon Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 Craig Gordon is the other one. And "Some Wifie" is Julie Fleeting, Scotland's all-time top international scorer. I think I will give this series a miss. Three Huns and two Tims. Quote
TheDonbytheDee Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 Only the five episodes available to me yesterday, which I did think strange. The hun or Tim thing doesn't bother me IF I think they were decent players. The Wifey fitba I have no interest in. Lots of players they could have picked from and we get that line up. Poor choices. They could have done Simmy, to coincide with his book launch. I can't think why they wouldn't have... Quote

Wouldn't surprise me if they do one for Durrant at some point though. The world class player whose career that was ended by the worst tackle ever in world football. Sally McCoist and Souness greeting at the camera about what could have been. Still makes me angry the shit Simmie went through after that day. A nicer bloke you couldn't meet. Quote

A really good player, but the iconicity comes from his early death. Not even close to someone like Strachan for example. I guess it's fair enough to call him an icon though. Played his entire career in Scotland and was successful at Motherwell too. If James Forrest pops his clogs in a couple of years, he'll get a 30 minute slot too. Quote

You're probably right about his early death being the contributing factor. Honestly didn't think he was that good, not saying shyte, but far better players at that time and more consistent, in my opinion. Quote

Capable of moments of genius but wildly inconsistent and worse than a man down when he wasn’t playing well. Bit of a weirdo as well by a few accounts. Quote

swaddon Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago I watched the Gary McAllister Football Icons episode last night. I mind when Liverpool signed him, and everyone thought it was a strange signing. Houllier knew what he was getting, and it paid off when they won three cups. I also forgot that he was booed when he returned to the Scotland team. I can't remember exactly why that was, but it did seem a bit disgraceful after all he did for the national team. Could he have made a difference at France '98 if he had been fit? We'll never know. I've never been much interested in international fitba, so could be wrong, but I remember him getting stick. Quote

This was three years after the penalty at Euro 96, and he had played in qualification for World Cup 98, so it wouldn't have been that. Quote
