A major sports sponsor says it would like to back the creation of a third Pro12 rugby team for Scotland - based in its home town of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Asset Management already sponsors major events like sailing's Cowes Week and the Scottish Open golf.

"I'd love to see a rugby team there of the calibre of Edinburgh or Glasgow, a professional team," chief executive Martin Gilbert told BBC Scotland. "Because I think, in rugby, Scotland still needs more professional teams."

The Scottish Rugby Union disbanded the Border Reivers in 2007 in order to concentrate funds on Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors.

Gilbert, whose company has sponsored Edinburgh in the past, thinks the north-east would also give its backing to a Pro12 rugby team.

"I think it would be supported up there because you'd get everywhere north of Dundee supportive of that sort of strategy," he said.

"It would be great and we would love to be involved in something like that.

"I think we do need to do something pretty radical.

"We've sponsored Edinburgh and we'd love to have a professional set-up in the north east."

Gilbert's company was Edinburgh's sponsor from 2008 until 2013, when it was outbid by BT Sport.

As well as sailing and golf events, Aberdeen Asset Management, an international investment management group with offices around the world, sponsors racing driver Paul Di Resta, Scottish Hockey, golfers Paul Lawrie and Catriona Matthew, plus ski schools.

Gilbert admits he has not been party to any discussions with the SRU about establishing a professional rugby team in Aberdeen.

However, the chief executive fears that the governing body might instead drop one of the two present professional teams because of tightening finances.

"My worry is they'll go the other way and cut even more," he said.

A Scottish Rugby spokesman suggested it would like to create a third team - but only if there was sufficient funding.

"We welcome any dialogue with any individual/s that would enable us to expand our investment in professional teams," he said in a statement.

"Clearly, at present, there would be a number of hurdles that we would have to surmount, including financial and other considerations, to increase from our existing two professional teams."

Since Aberdeen Asset Management hold a lot of our debt and the rugby would need infrastructure - you would imagine if Gilbert goes ahead with the plan it would link up somehow with a new stadium with AFC. You would also imagine Ian Wood would be in on this as a rugby fan (or so the rumour say).

  2. http://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/news/local/dons-fan-battles-life-threatening-injury-to-go-to-final-1.268794

A FORMER Dons fans’ chief today said a life-threatening injury will not stop him going to the League Cup final this weekend.

Bill Stephen, who was previously the chairman of the Pittodrie Bar Supporters Club, spent a week in hospital, including time in intensive care, after being struck by a car just eight weeks ago.

The 38-year-old however insisted nothing will stop him following his beloved Dons to Celtic Park.

Bill said: “I can’t wait for the cup final, even although I was run over eight weeks ago.

“I got quite a bad head injury as the skin around my brain haemorrhaged.

“I was quite close to death, basically.”

Incredibly, the Northfield native attended the 4-0 semi-final victory over St Johnstone just three weeks after the accident.

  3. DEREK McInnes last night insisted Yogi had made a big boo-boo with his attempt at League Cup mind games.

Inverness boss John Hughes said the football suits should just hand McInnes’s Aberdeen the trophy after forcing his side to play Hibs tonight in the league.

But McInnes hit back and argued that only last week big Yogi was saying he was glad to have a match in the build-up to Sunday’s final at Parkhead.

The Dons gaffer said: “I don’t know if it’s mind games, you’d need to ask him, but I’m a bit confused.Last week he said he’d rather have a game, that ‘these boys would rather play than train’. So which is it?

“The good thing from their point of view is that they have two players who are available for the final now. Without their game with Hibs, game that would have been up for debate.

“We both had a cup tie at the weekend and ran the risk of getting injuries and suspensions.

“We can only speak about our preparation and we’ve had a lot of games recently as well with one or two injuries and concerns.

“Would I like a midweek game before a final? Absolutely not but I thought I read comments last week that he was happy with the game.”

Hughes also tried to pile the pressure on the Dons by claiming the Pittodrie men are massive favourites for the final – but McInnes insists he’s heard it all before and won’t fall for any tricks.

McInnes said: “You can pre-write it and second-guess it. It was the Dumbarton players last week, saying all the pressure was on Aberdeen. We’ve had it all season.

“From every columnist to the opposition – and I understand why – there is an expectation on the team.

“There are 40,000 fans coming but the players have handled every situation and challenge so far. When there is more fans there then it’s something for the opposition to use.

“I get that but it’s not going to affect us. We’re going to play the game, not the occasion.”

McInnes is set to receive a final boost with Peter Pawlett expected to be passed fit for Sunday.

The Dons winger missed the Scottish Cup win over Dumbarton with a hip problem but McInnes said: “Peter will be fit. He hasn’t trained with the squad but will do tomorrow and if he comes through pain free, that will be him.”

  5. Aberdeen's run to the Scottish League Cup final has captured the imagination of the city but for three players in particular Sunday's showpiece match will be extra special.

Dons stars Barry Robson, Adam Rooney and Jonny Hayes all played for opponents Inverness CT earlier in their careers and understand exactly what victory would mean for either side.

Robson helped the Highland club establish themselves in Scotland's professional setup, as the club won the Second Division championship in 1999.

His form in the First Division for Steve Patterson's side earned him a move to Dundee United in 2003 and saw the midfielder turn out for Celtic, Middlesbrough as well as Scotland.

However he insists there will be no room for sentiment when the teams take to the pitch at Parkhead.

Robson told STV: "When you move on, you have to move on and concentrate on the club you are playing for. It is a terrific club with some real nice people who deserve a lot of credit for what they have achieved for being a small club and not having a huge support.

"They've punched above their weight for a number of years but my main concentration is on Aberdeen and doing everything we can to lift the trophy."

Jonny Hayes arrived at the Caledonian Stadium in the summer of 2009 having spent the early part of his career in England's lower leagues.

His thrilling wing play saw him join Craig Brown's Dons in 2012 but after an underwhelming first term at Pittodrie, the Irishman has been revitalised under Derek McInnes.

And the 26-year-old understands what a first cup triumph since 1995 would mean to the city and the squad.

He said: "It's been that so long since Aberdeen won a cup I think the fans would remember you for a long, long time. That's a nice sentimental thing to take with you when you finish your career.

"I'm sure if I still lived in Aberdeen after winning a couple of cups that you'd be long remembered."

Striker Adam Rooney only arrived in the Granite City in January but has made a big impact so far, scoring six goals in eight matches since a move from Oldham.

The attacker experience both highs and lows during his three-year spell in the Highlands suffering relegation in his first campaign with the team.

Rooney's 26 goals in 42 matches were vital as Terry Butcher's team cruised to the First Division title and a return to the big time.

Another 21 goals in 42 games helped earn the Irishman a move to Birmingham City and while things didn't quite work out down south, Rooney sees Sunday's final as an opportunity to make his own mark on the club.

He insists the team's past success won't play on his mind when he steps out in front of 40,000 Dons supporters in Glasgow.

Rooney said: "It really hits you when you come in and see the players that have played for the club and some of the great achievements of the past. That is what you want as a footballer, to strive to play on those big occasions and we want to set our mark on the club."

  6. Job done, players didn't really want to risk anything and can't blame them for that, also nice to bump in to a lot of people in the Y including mizer

Lets be honest it was Hebrews daughter you were happy to bump into...

  8. Yes he is. Saved me queuing up, thanks. But how did you know the person I am getting it through? It's worrying me a little bit, especially with your reputation. ;) I will also try and stay out of the way of any hospitals this time.

Also he mentioned about going to the  before the game. I'm guessing this is open to everyone and has not been booked or anything?

I have included you guys in the estimated numbers for the pub so it should be fine and be able to go upstairs. I have removed the pub name as its like a light to moths. I know Stevie through his sister who goes to Aberdeen & Scotland games with us.

  9. Also my mate who is getting my tickets through a mate through a mate through a supporters club told me he is getting it through the Globe Reds. I really hope you guys are keeping my tickets safe. The last league cup final was one my first games and since then it has been years of disappointment. If I miss this final I will not know what to do.

Never knew Stevie was getting you a ticket, now you behave yourself and dont drink too much this time  :stretcher:

Probably best you don't know what happened when Mizer was in charge of the globes tickets in Munich then  ;)

Im surprised you let me stagger doon the road with your ticket yesterday ;)

The look on his face when he told me he had lost them was hilarious. He knew he was a dead man walking.

    Indeed!

  10. Pretty poor game - but we won again, hopefully Langfield has got his clangs oot for a while...

    Good support up fae Dumbarton
