Darren Mackie Retires (but might now change his mind)

I'm hearing Darren Mackie has retired. Hopefully now we can pack in all the jokes and rumours about him re-signing for us.

Well there's one of the batch of kids that emerged in the late 90s (ie McGuire, Mackie, McNaughton, Michie, Clark, etc) who is from Inverurie and one from Kemnay.

Phoenix FC, Arizona’s premier professional soccer franchise, is proud to announce that it has signed its first professional player to a one-year contract for the team’s upcoming inaugural season, former Aberdeen FC forward Darren Mackie.

A renowned Scottish Premier League veteran, Mackie has competed in 364 total matches over 14 years with Aberdeen FC, and has scored 69 goals in his career.

"We are thrilled to come to an agreement with Darren knowing that he possesses outstanding qualities on and off the field," said Phoenix FC Head Coach David Robertson. "With Darren’s leadership and experience, Phoenix FC is positioned to immediately compete for a USL PRO Championship."

Robertson was a six-time Scottish Premier League champion, all with Aberdeen FC.

A product of Aberdeen’s youth academy, Mackie made his professional debut for the club in the 1999-2000 season. He twice scored double-digits for the club, in both the 2004-05 and 2006-07 seasons, and also made appearances during the club’s forays into European competition, scoring twice in 10 appearances in the UEFA Cup and Europa League.

Per club policy, financial details will not be disclosed and the contract is still pending approval by USL PRO and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). Phoenix FC begins play in USL PRO in April 2013.

Read that on the weekend, good luck to him! Glad he's still a red
