THE Dons today revealed they have banned flag displays at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen have given fans group the Red Ultras – who organise colourful displays on match days – the red card after smoke flares were let off during last month’s SPL clash with Celtic in Glasgow.

Club sources confirmed the ban was imposed in connection with an alleged incident at Celtic Park where a man was said to have used a ticket purchased by the Ultras group.

The Ultras receive special privileges to get into Pittodrie early to lay out the card and flag displays which have been a feature of Aberdeen’s home games in recent seasons.

That privilege has been removed until further notice.

Dons spokesman Dave Macdermid said: “The ban on flag displays will remain until we decide otherwise.

“We are not happy with what happened at Celtic Park and believe we have taken the right step to show that bad behaviour at games will not be tolerated.â€

The SPL take a dim view of fans carrying smoke flares into matches and have asked the Dons to explain why a total of five were set off during the Celtic game.

Macdermid said: “We have already been fined by UEFA because a fan set off a flare during our match against Dnipro in the Ukraine.

“It’s important we are seen to act and urge fans to remember it’s the club who will suffer if they don’t behave at games.â€

The Ultras responded to the ban by raising a banner at last weekend’s match at Falkirk with the words “Business as usual†printed on it.

The Evening Express received a telephone call from a fan, who initially claimed he wasn’t a member of the Ultras, confirming the ban was in place.

The fan eventually admitted he was a member of the Ultras but refused to give his name and promised to get one of their group to come back with an official comment.

We are still waiting. We were also unable to contact Steve McCormick, who has acted as the spokeman for the Ultras in the past.

CRAIG Hendry, 27, of Aberdeen, appeared in Glasgow Sheriff Court on September 30 charged with culpable and reckless conduct at the Celtic game.

He made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.

Can't say I saw the flare being lit, but thats a shame.

I think he was saying that the streets aren't safe any more because of YOU. And who can argue with that?

How much harm can a midget cause?

Surely it should only be the person who broke the law that should be punished, and not all of the people in the supporters club they got the ticket from??.

Well, that's like saying we should only blame Darren Mackie for AFCs poor run of recent form.

Even though it isn't all his fault - if he had bagged 10 goals by now - we wouldn't be where we are.

The street's aren't safe because of a smoke bomb getting set off? WTF?

The streets are safe... you've been watching too much Sky News, min!!!

The streets aren't safe :o I blame Ukrainian road workers to many bloody potholes, could cause a injury

???

I see no analogy between what I said and your quote above

Depends on how much C4 he has strapped to his chest. Or how many guns he has.

;)

I see the banning was on the sky sports news - on the newsbar at the bottom of the screen.

It said "Aberdeen has banned flags for the Red Ultras supporters group after they threw flares at Celtic Park"  ::)

that gives me a idea, how about we throw hunners o pairs o flare intae the taig end, improve the dress sense in the east end off glasgow ;)

I know the culprit, he's not a Red Ultra.

More like.

I know the culprit, he's not a Red Ultra.

I was talking to the Red Untra who was handing out all the streamers in the Roseburn on Saturday, and he was saying that it was one of them who'd done it, and that he'd set off about 5 of them.

Don't shoot the messenger.

I think he was taking the piss.

I just think this is something that has gone out of hand.  Why punish a GROUP, when it is easy to deal with an INDIVIDUAL?

Why is it that the displays are banned at HOME games, when it was an AWAY game issue?

I have the feeling the power that be have never been entirely comfortable with the Ultra's and displays and have been looking at the soonest oppertunity to get rid.

Why is the club not sticking up for the fns, who as often as not get treated abysmally by the Weegie authorities anyway?

A boycot of home games might improve dialogue between fans and the faceless powers that be.

I know the lad personally who got caught for it, he's not a RU in the slightest.

an update from Mad.

Herr Morgan has been ignoring e-mails from the group so we can rectify the current situation. Our cupboard with all the groups gear in it has a new padlock on it so the lads cant get in.

On matchdays a steward stands guard outside the groups cupboard to prevent anyone tryin to get in!!

One member of the group went down to the stadium to take our flags, and other supporters flags out so they can be displayed at tannadice this weekend.

But Herr Morgan has said no materials are allowed out of the cupboard and no materials are allowed to be displayed at games.

Im not sure where we stand on this as the items in the cupboard belong to the group and the red army, yet they wont let anyone take anything from there.

Its bizarre to say the least.

Feel free to let the fuhrer know how you feel.

will be delighted to hear from you all.

STAND FREE

I emailed John today as I was pretty disgusted at the alleged behaviour from AFC.

I have since had a reply.  I get the impression that the Red Ultras are not being exactly forthcoming with the background to this story and what has happened since.

the return of oldyoungloon  ;D

Alledgedly
