  1. no its a critique of a so far appalling transfer strategy, but you seem to have the inside track you condescending fud

McInnes' transfer strategy which he's had from the start, which has generally involved signing up coming players from our league or players from down south who are out of the picture for whatever reason, has been fairly successful up to a point, as much as the well may be starting to run dry. Certainly wouldn't call it appalling.

  2. hibs signed lb that has been capped by netherlands... wonder where the dna money is...or maybe mcinnes has his eye on an injury prone shiter from down south

Sounds like you've done your research on this lad - is he actually any good and what's his injury record like?

  3. May was booed off by a small minority on Saturday. It's very evidently time for Anderson to get a shot, although I'm wary of him having the pressure on him being seen as a saviour, or if it goes the other way and he's starved of service and things don't come off for him, is he going to get the same pelters too?

I don't actually think we're that far off. Good amount of shots on Saturday, just missing the killer pass and penetration. The Scott Wright through the middle experiment worked well. I know St Mirren were weak that day but I think our pace, fluidity and movement that day was the primary reason. They couldn't live with us.

  4. Okay, I accept that. I think that the issue is, then, that he probably holds the youth players to a higher standard than other players. When Christie went on a run of pap form he wasn't replaced, neither McGinn. At some point, what transpires on the pitch must be a function of what is happening in training and so they must have shown some drop in form in training too. Attitude is one thing, but again I expect younger players are held to a higher standard, maybe correctly so for their futures development. Again, I think the biggest issue for most is then 10-15 minutes that yer Maynards get just because their more senior when they are demonstrably pish.

I've always thought McGinn, Christie (and Hayes prior) were perhaps persisted with more than others because they've got previous for producing a moment of magic from nowhere, even when they weren't playing especially well.

Was there a ready made striker in the youths to perform the same sort of role which he expected Maynard or Parker to fufill? Shankland got his chance in the season we had Parker, and last season may likely have been too early for Anderson, and I wasn't hugely convinced by any of the other young attacking players from what I saw in the youths. I'm not disagreeing with you per se, but it goes without saying that McInnes thought Maynard/Parker etc would be able to contribute when they were signed, albeit with the benefit of hindsight that didn't happen. Both players were shipped out or confined to the bench when it became apparent that they weren't producing - in fact I'm pretty sure McLennan took the place of Maynard on the bench towards the end of the last season.

I get the point you're making and see where you're coming from, I just think there's a lot more to the "blooding youngsters" debate than we generally hear.

  5. Absolutely, he's not quite there yet.

The overwhelming evidence shows that McInnes is very cautious in his approach - to the extreme. I don't think anyone would deny that, or suggest that it isn't an issue. To be honest, it's basic logic. Was Wright better spending 6 months on loan, or playing 22 minutes in 6 months? What mitigations could there be for this, and how does it benefit the player? Nobody is basing their opinion on guesswork they're basing it on limited, but accurate and useful, knowledge garnered watching the team and players' performances every week. From which, it is possible to articulate some pretty good questions that need answering. Did McInnes make a mistake in not sending Wright on loan? Did he do it to teach him a lesson because he was a young upstart (and, if so, did it work?)? Was he protecting the player in some way? Was there an unexpected upsurge in the performance of other squad players that meant it simply wasn't possible for Wright to get 15-20 minutes regularly? If so, why wasn't this visible on the pitch? "Average Joe" is asking pretty valid questions of a manager who has a responsibility to our young players, are we supposed to accept everything that happens without question? I'm not suggesting that McInnes hasn't got answers, I'm saying that we're not party to them so it's definitely worth discussing on a message board. The most obvious thing for me is that we don't appear to have a strategy with regard to youth development, nor an obligation or a set of targets. McInnes needs time to decide his preferred 11 this season, but come November we should have a good idea and we should start to see more minutes for guys like Campbell. In previous years we've fucked about with yer Maynards, Parkers and Monakanas well into the January window to the detriment of youth progress. There should be a strategy and a set of targets at club level to ensure that this occurs.

Things are constantly questioned as they should be, but often its just a case that people don't like the answers or don't want to think that the way they initially think may be wrong.

McInnes said in January that he saw Wright being important for the remainder of the season (which is why he wasn't loaned out), then said at a fans Q&A that he wanted more from Wright, and that he didn't do himself justice, which suggests an issue with his attitude and/or performance in training.

Of course things should be questioned, but if they're disagreeing with McInnes' assertion above then I'd question what they're basing it on if not guesswork. If a young player isn't doing it in training, should they be played regardless just to tick a box? Rather than having a pre-defined aversion to playing youth, could it be that McInnes wants players to earn a place in the team and be able to match the standards of the rest of the squad during the week?

McInnes absolutely has a responsibility to the youth, but that also covers their wider development rather than just playing them in the first team.

  6. I think McInnes will persist with the Gleeson and Ball combo for a while like. I'd have Campbell out on loan with McInnes' record of playing youngsters. Six months at a good championship club. Playing should be the order of the day for these lads. Specifically playing against mannies.

The age old argument I guess around the manager and backroom team knowing what's best for the lad in terms of his development, and your average Joe basing their opinion on guesswork.

From what I've seen, Campbell looks technically good but maybe does need a spell on loan to bulk up a bit.

  7. Loan till January is a bit of a puzzler. Doesn't really make a lot of sense unless the club are playing down the length of absence McKenna will be missing for. Or as Rico has said, if McKenna is offski tomorrow.

If DM was really serious about going with a conventional left back/wing back surely the loan would have been for the full season?

This will have been dictated by Derby. If DM went hollering and demanding a season long loan, they'd have just let him go to another club who accepted the loan till January.

See where all three parties are in January and review it.

  8. Fair enough, I did only have a brief look at results but had remembered it differently. Guess it just bugs me we sat and invited pressure when we were only one up.

More than one way to skin a cat I guess, and I agree that clinging on wouldn't be my default setting in a situation like that. We got way too panicky and way too harum scarum way too quickly.

If the plan was to effectively hit them on the break, then it was poorly executed IMO. Gleeson looked like the one who could hold it up in the middle and distribute it to our quicker/creative players, so I wouldn't have taken him off.

  9. Not talking about teams outside of the top 5. It doesn't work. Even my hibby mate said we'd defend as soon as we went 1 up. It's obvious and invites attack which we eventually buckle at. We're not savvy enough. Don't think we even got into that position often last season mind.

Last season we won every game we took the lead in against Celtic, Hibs (x2) and Hearts. Only exception was the draw at home to Sevco on the second last day of the season.

It's not how I'd have set it up, but Hibs rarely penetrated us and were mainly reduced to long rang efforts. We were 5 minutes away from scraping it on Saturday.

Not saying it's a flawless masterplan either, but blanket "it doesn't work" statements are off the mark.

  10. A small, agile and nippy LB in the Logan mould would be cracking for us. As it is, there's always been other areas of the team which have needed addressed as a higher priority, so we've made do with Consi.

Good presence in the opposition box too let's remember.

  11. Don't think he will.....Hivs at Easter Road is a different animal to St Boo at home. Don't have a big problem with that but do think we should set up as we did yesterday as much as possible at home. Wright and GMS were both virtually unplayable for the St Boo defenders. Could, and possibly should, have been 6 or 7.

Great to see the young eens getting game time too.

Wright was brilliant today, loved him through the middle. McInnes said post match that even after McGinn was injured he was keen to give Wright a chance through the middle so played Ross instead of putting Wright back out wide

Hibs a different prospect however but would hope we don't re-invent the wheel despite the injuries seemingly easing.

  12. Magical.

What you greeting about now Blobby?

The bit you chose to chop backed up why I thought it - I've seen Ross in youth games and while he looked good he was quite harum scarum at times (as is common with an enthusiastic youngster), yet he looked far more composed today than I've ever seen him, and Wright's decision making was better than I've seen it before, as opposed to times at the start last season. Perhaps they're now both ready and it's the right time is all I'm saying.

Or maybe that's off the mark? The players don't like the manager and laugh about him behind his back?  ;)

  13. Thought May was decent last week too (contrary to popular opinion) and he's been working hard for it. He's there to contribute outside of the box as well as inside, which I think he's been doing this season, now hopefully his goal tally goes up. Everyone would be delighted if this gives him the required lift.

Rather than Ross and Wright playing well being a slight on McInnes and his management of them, perhaps it could be that now was the right time for them, albeit Ross got his chance through a slice of misfortune. Ross, like a lot of his colleagues in the youth team, has looked very raw and almost too eager when I've seen him in the youth league. By contrast he was very calm and composed today, as was McLennan when he came on. Wright was also running into brick walls far less than when he played at the start of last season.

All in all, a good win.

  14. He is on £7.5k/week at the dhims. There is just no way we can get close to matching that. I think he will sit tight and sign for a lower end Championship club in January on at least equivalent wages. Coming here if he got the bog standard £3.5k/week he would lose over £600k over the length of a 3 year contract. Even if we pushed the boat out and went to £5k/week he would still lose nearly £400k. Not including better win bonuses. It just won't be happening...

What was GMS on at the Tims before he came to us last summer? Similar scenario, no?

  15. I was talking about our youth players in general. They're nae good enough was my point. Whether you have an agenda against McInnes or not you can't argue that he knows more about our squad than the fans do and that he's more qualified than us to make the call on whether players are ready to be first team starters or not.

McInnes suggested at a recent Q&A that Wright wasn't doing enough in training to justify first team game time, which tends to back up what you're saying.

  16. I'm quite intrigued by the 'no lose at any cost'  talk.  Do you think this is why in Europe from twelve home legs we've drawn seven??  Is it just me or were FC Groningen, FK Shkendija, HNK Rijeka, Kairat Almaty, NK Maribor, Siroki Brijeg all beatable??

Not sure of the relevance there. Europe is all about getting through, and you're ignoring a few cracking away wins out of that lot.

  17. He's done well in his two games, however having watched him a few times for the U20s last season I didn't think he was ready for the first team.

It'll take one poor game for everyone to turn on him and decide he's shite.

    Yip.

For now (or at least prior to us signing Wilson), the expectation and pressure levels on him have gone right up. The lad will want to play, he's full of enthusiasm, but it's down to McInnes to keep his feet on the ground and take the pressure off him when required.

Would expect him to be a good option coming off the bench in the meantime.

  18. Wilson injured his knee in 2016 and has only played 2 first team games since while on loan at Sheffield United according to soccerbase. As Manc says not the signing to excite the fans.

Not interested in whether his name or Wiki pages excites the fans, I'm interested in whether he scores and produces goals.
