Bloody love Devlin. He’s felt like ‘Aberdeen’ from day one. Rare for me to take to a player so early and so completely but feels like he’s been here forever not just 2 1/2 years. There can be better players at us for longer who don’t feel so integral to the club for me. He’s not perfect but not coincidental to me that our results are better when he’s in the team (I think?). I just like how the guy conducts himself. Chuffed he’s back getting a consistent run in the team.8 points

Walking home down King St. and on the opposite side of the road there was a wee girl with her parents singing "Hearts, Hearts are falling apart again" over and over - somebody has been brought up proper!6 points

A countdown clock would be a very easy way to make VAR significantly better. If you can't tell if it's an error within ten seconds of seeing replays then it's not clear and obvious, play on.5 points

Just back. Decent game, tireless performance and should have got something from it. Some sitters missed and a weak bit of defending. We pressed really high though and matched them all over the park. Going man for man was high risk but good to see. Their goal came from Devlin being high up on his man and tanking back in to cover for Milne who needs to be a bit better with his positioning. Earlier in the season, we'd have had the two defenders deep and probably dealt with it, but we'd have been passing it sideways and allowing them 80 yards of space all over the park. It's a worthwhile trade-off. Thought Aouchiche worked his arse off in there tonight (might have solved our midfield issue?), Armstrong outstanding for an hour and Lobban played like a seasoned pro. Was happy enough with the subs, I think Sunday has to be the priority. Yengi wasn't terrible, Milanovic was. Karlsson ineffective but generally worked hard. Mitov obviously pissed off with the disgusting besmirchment of his abilities on here recently and was top class - anyone questioning him should be flogged. Lazetic should be scoring tonight and has to be disappointed. Nisbet looked possessed when he came on. By a man with extremely heavy feet. His first five passes were hit at quadruple speed. You could see he really wanted to get involved, but everyone else was out on their arse (or Yengi or Milanovic).4 points

An AFC limerick thread was started by Radiored (neeps as was) way back in 2019. Saw mentioned it was missed so bringing it over here. Rico has approved this Here’s the very first limerick from Radiored (the master of the gemme) which was dedicated to Cosgrove A useless big laddie called Sam Like a ham sannie devoid o' the ham But at penalty kicks, Wi a smirk 'tween eez chicks, made the keeper feel like a right bam And the final offering from Swaddon The Dons have been battered in Greece Which fair made me choke on my piece Our players are sh*te Yes, you hear me right Maist of the c*nts are nae eese4 points

Aberdeen winning the Scottish Cup and Scotland qualifying for the World Cup within six months of each other, that's the dream. And yet, within those six months, both Jimmy Thelin and Steve Clarke have had more criticism than praise, and not unfairly so considering there's been more poor performances than good ones from both teams. Despite that, they've still both delivered the ultimate high. Kasper Schmeichel also deserves a lot of credit for being part of both days.4 points

The sad thing is Clarkson would excel in another team's midfield. Hibs play a three-man midfield; usually Barlaser who sits between Grant Hanley and the other two midfielders, McGrath and Mulligan. I don't think any of those players are particularly more talented than Clarkson. Barlaser does the simple things. Collects the ball from defence and passes forward. McGrath and Mulligan collect and have three to four passing options -their front two and the two wing backs who get forward at pace. They repeatedly cut us open with just two-three passes a few weeks ago, not helped by our front three doing little pressing on Barlaser, and Palaversa having a nightmare, but that's another debate. For us, when Clarkson plays, often he turns and his options are a long ball forward (not necessarily a bad thing because he can pick players out from distance, one of his strengths) or a side ways pass to the wing back. He could be used so much more effectively in a three-man midfield. Technically, he's a better player than Hearts' Cammy Devlin, but even though they also play two midfielders, Devlin has two wingers and two strikers to aim passes at. Wait for him to sign for Hibs in January and start opening up chances for Boyle, Bowie and the two Caddens, while we're still scratching our heads.4 points

I disagree. It's the equivalent of saying Billy Gilmour isn't good enough. You adjust the team to get the best out of players like Clarkson, because if you do then they'll create numerous chances. They're the difference between being a sideways, laboured, slow build up team, that hopes for a mistake from the opposition, and a team that makes the incisive pass and brings the attacking players into play when they have their best chance of scoring before the opponent gets back. The fact that we didn't sign anyone to compliment Clarkson, even as an option during games, is criminal. Even Robson knew how to get the best out of him. Clarkson taking the ball from defence and immediately getting the strikers involved, with Ramadani and Shinnie pressing high was a great setup. That, with the option switch and play two defensive midfielders and a number 10 like Armstrong would be a great way to build a squad (midfield). We really only needed one additional signing to do that. There isn't a chance on earth that Marshall is close to the level of Clarkson (that's not a criticism), and the Icelandic laddy looks to me to be a replacement for Nilsen in the squad, but I doubt he'll be getting much time this season. If Polvara is open to being a utility player, then he's worth his weight in gold. Palaversa can leave with many thanks for his only good game.4 points

Presumably if this thread is focussed on AFC-related non-footballing matters we can just merge the Peter Ambrose thread into it?4 points

Cardiff will host the opening game, and both semis and the final will be held at Firhill. I'm joking, they will be at Wembley. Hampden will host games in the group stages, last-16 and a quarter final. See, I looked for an auld thread on this topic before starting a new one. I'm settling in well here.4 points

No, because the posts relating to the Brewdog link up were moved from the original 'club stuff' thread to a specific Brewdog thread. Felt his position had become untenable.4 points

I'm sensing a deepening split in the moderator camp. Exactly the sort of thing that happens when dangerously miscellaneous threads are introduced to a forum. 263 people were killed in 2022 due to forum related violence, of which almost all were down to the lazy categorisation of topics. Forum moderator was the third most dangerous job in the UK that year.4 points

Andy Considine is a proper hero. A fan who grew up to play over 400 games for the club, even winning a trophy. And topping it all off with a Scotland debut at Hampden, at the age of 33, helping the team to a clean sheet in a meaningful game. Seems to be a genuinely good guy and a hugely loyal servant who played wherever his manager asked him to. He's basically the manifestation of the dreams of every kid who grew up wanting to play for the Dons.3 points

Considine is a proper AFC legend. Of course he had shit games, but he was immense in plenty others and he played enough. We also had some real shite in our back four for a lot of his time. I reckon he would have done a great job at any other team in Scotland including either of the the bigot brothers. He was never a left back, but in most games he played at left back he did a sterling job and was only usually found wanting when up against serious pace, but he was fine for the most part in the league. I get we all have differing opinions, but we really never signed much better defenders than Andy Considine during his time with us.3 points

I guess it's how this system might evolve then. How does it move from cagey, luck-riding, low chance creating, 1-0 wins, to something exciting? Or more exciting, at least. McInnes played a 3-4-3 for a bit, with Watkins, Hedges and some other cunt leading the line, and it was the most entertaining he had been for a few years. It's often a setup that trades excitement for pragmatism though, which isn't the club's strategy, so one way or another Thelin will have to change. Personally, I'm happy enough with short term pragmatism until the personnel are in place, however I'm not sure that we'll ever really get the personnel to perform a 3-4-3 consistently well in our league. I think you could get that with a 3-5-2, or derivative of that setup.3 points
-
Well, I'll give Thelin some credit. He inverted the wing backs more in the second half which meant we were not as overrun in the midfield. It allowed Aouchiche to find space to pick passes, which also brought the likes of Armstrong and Karlsson more into the game (even if the latter at times was a waste of a shirt). But again, it's individuals that have won us the game rather than what we were doing as a team. The goal is Shinnie refusing to give up on the ball, and Keskinen doing what Karlsson doesn't do and looking up to pick out a teammate. And the first half was unforgivable. A better team than Livingston have that game won by half-time.3 points

The highlights up on the big screen today, before kick off, was the Aberdeen 6 Hearts 2 game from 1992. It was a truly wonderful match and just how good was Duncan Shearer.3 points

Clarkson is arguably our most talented plaar; that JT hisna got a tune oot o him is a pretty major failure on his part. That lame performance against Motherwell is the same issue extrapolated: our midfield set-up is a disaster. Naebody up the pitch. Surely the idea of having 3 centre-backs is to give your midfield better chances to get up the pitch?3 points

Spot on. When my tree goes up this week, I'll be thinking back to Hearts victory against the Central Powers in WWI. If it wasn't for the Jam boys getting a rare European away win, we'd all be speaking German.3 points
