As the "this is water" speech I put up yesterday identified - and zillions of other sources - how we think determines what we see. The same reality is interpreted completely differently depending on who is doing the viewing and how they view.

 

Consider his performance in a different way. Which of McGregor's saves were exceptional? Which one of them was truly great, one that any competent keeper would not have been expected to save? Which of them, had he not made it, would he not have been slagged for?

 

McGregor's performance was very good because he did the competent well and because he was so busy, he did the competent well repeatedly. Had he let any of them in, it would have been a howler, a piece of total incompetence.

 

Without knowing that they're doing it and born from a total ignorance of the art of goalkeeping, those gushing in praise for McGregor last night are praising him for doing the basic requirements of the role and not fucking up. There was nothing exceptional about any of the saves.

Agreed. There were some smart saves but definitely nothing that even Jamie Langfield should have struggled with. The best one, in my humble and non self-centred opinion (excellent speech by the way), was after the free kick that hit the bar when the ball was headed back towards goal and McGregor was able to get up and scramble across to claw it away. I agree that he got up smart and fisted it past the post by reacting well but what about this as an observation?

 

He should never have been on the ground. His dive towards the free kick was futile. He was never getting near it, as he well knew when he took his dive.

This is a totally different issue to delivering opinions with conviction and presenting truths with force. Even then, these can only be done when the presenter has put in the full time and is qualified to know.

Your memory is good. Bobby Clark, unlike the vast, vast majority in the modern era was never a futile diver.

It's not even close. This happens all the time, with even worse examples than this.

 

 

EDIT: The pic, if seen just in isolation may be misleading in that it might look like the ball went over his hand. The truth was that McGregor's hand in that screen shot was the closest it got during the flight and still never got anywhere near it. The ball didn't go over his hand. This was him being as far right as he could get, having left a big hole over the wall.

Another win tonight but as with Czech game could easily have been a loss. How Teirney got in the squad in front of Shinnie is beyond me. Not even close to being in the same class as Shinnie. Ritchie took his goal well after some awful defending by Ager. Gordon had some great saves in 2nd half.

Pretty sure Tierney gave the ball away more in the first half than shinnie has done all season... Yet schmichael said at HT he was by far the best player on the pitch, incredible! Seemed to be growing into the game in the second half but I didn't catch the end.

 

Gordon looked good, as did McGinn and Ritchie. Cant believe he didn't get a second.

 

I really don't see the point in playing Greer, Whittaker, Maloney et all... They're not going to be involved long term so why persist with them when we have the chance to try out some younger players?
