Scotland opened their Uefa Under-21 Championship qualifying campaign with a frustrating draw at home to Bulgaria.

Dundee United's Scott Allan turned in an energetic and skilful first-half display but could not inspire a breakthrough at St Mirren Park.

Allan fizzed a long-range shot just wide and set up Jordan Rhodes, who was denied by a save from Plamen Iliev.

Scotland struggled to create chances after the interval with Grant Adam the busier goalkeeper.

Manager Billy Stark sprang something of a surprise by choosing Dundee United's Stuart Armstrong ahead of Rangers' Gregg Wylde on the left of midfield, while three Hibernian players - David Wotherspoon, Callum Booth and Paul Hanlon - were included in the back four.

The lively Allan showed some neat footwork before firing the ball narrowly wide of the top corner from 22 yards.

The midfielder then found United team-mate Johnny Russell with a curling ball to the far post but the Tannadice forward had to stretch and he scooped his effort beyond the post.

Allan created the best chance of the game on 40 minutes, making space with another superb piece of skill and threading the ball through for Rhodes, but the Huddersfield striker failed to get hold of his shot, allowing Iliev to parry.

Adam had little to do in the first half but he had an uncomfortable moment just after the restart when he fumbled Alexander Tonev's low cross at his near post.

The Rangers keeper soon made two good saves, blocking Stanislav Kostov's drive before getting down well to hold Georgi Milanov's 25-yard strike.

Adam then stopped a weak effort from Momchil Tsvetanov after his throw out put his team in trouble before holding a powerful free-kick from the substitute.

Russell slipped after a clever pass into the penalty box from Allan and then benefited from a slip in the visiting defence to run in on goal but Iliev got down to block his driven shot.

A tiring Allan was replaced by Peter Pawlett going into the final 15 minutes but a backward header from the Aberdeen man was held in the only late chance of note.

Jack and Pawlett both featured again last night with Andy Rhodes son getting a hat-trick :o

UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifier

Luxembourg 1-5 Scotland

Stade Josy Barthel, Luxembourg

Thursday, 6 October

Jordan Rhodes bagged a hat-trick for Scotland under-21s as Billy Stark's side defeated Luxembourg 5-1 at the Stade Josy Barthel in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying round.

The Huddersfield Town striker grabbed his first goals in a Scotland jersey with Alex MacDonald and Paul Hanlon scoring the others.

Stark's side started the game well and enjoyed a lot of early possession.

Rhodes had his first effort on goal on 10 minutes but his long-range shot was well held by the Luxembourg goalkeeper Philippe Hahm.

Scotland should have had a penalty on 23 minutes after Rhodes was fouled by Hahm but referee Clayton Pisani waved away Scottish claims.

David Wotherspoon and Scott Allan had efforts which were off-target just before the half-hour mark before Scotland finally made the breakthrough via Alex MacDonald.

The Burnley forward's low drive from the edge of the penalty box bounced under Hahm's body and into the back of the net to give Scotland the lead.

It was 2-0 just three minutes later when Rhodes scored his first goal in a Scotland jersey.

Ryan Jack's cross from the right was poked home by the big striker to double Scotland's advantage.

Rhodes scored his second of the evening just before half-time after pouncing on some slack defending by Luxembourg and smashing the ball into the back of the net.

Scotland started the second half as they did the first and enjoyed a lot of the ball.

Rhodes bagged his hat-trick on 65 minutes with a lovely dink past Hahm from a Gregg Wylde cross.

Luxembourg scored a consolation goal on 83 minutes through substitute Gincalo Almeida when his shot from distance squeezed past Rangers goalkeeper Grant Adam to make it 4-1.

But Paul Hanlon soon restored Scotland's four goal advantage when his glancing header from a David Wotherspoon free-kick found the back of the net.

Scotland go into Monday night's match against Austria at St Mirren Park in goal-scoring form and will be looking to keep the pressure on the Netherlands at the top of Group 10 with another win.

Scotland: Adam, Hanlon, Wilson, Perry, Jack, Wylde (Pawlett 66), Wotherspoon, Palmer, Allan (Russell 79), MacDonald, Rhodes (Griffiths 75).

Subs: Ridgers, Cole, Booth, Armstrong, Griffiths, Russell, Pawlett.

Cheers....that would be all competitive U21 games surely, or is it now an SFA ruling that competitive or friendly that is the venue  ???

The SFA decided to have a "home" ground for the U21s as continuity might help them to get better results.

Hard to find fault with this policy sofar...
