A DEAL to sell Rangers Football Club to Scots venture capitalist Craig Whyte will go though by the middle of January, according to senior sources at the club.

Whyte, 39, met with Ibrox chairman Alastair Johnston in Glasgow to discuss the purchase of Sir David Murray's shareholding in the club.

 

The proposed £33 million deal will wipe out the existing debt that has stymied Rangers in the transfer market for two years.

 

Yesterday, sources at Rangers said the deal, barring any late hitches, could be completed before Christmas but it is more likely that it will be done by the middle of January. "We can't say with 100 per cent certainty, but Whyte has the money and is very convincing. We think the deal will happen," said the source.

 

Murray has presided over Rangers for 22 years but has been keen to sell his stake for some time.

 

Hopefully the debt thing is not true as that is what is holding them back at the moment.

Joey Barton has been told to stay away from Rangers until Monday after an altercation with team-mate Andy Halliday, says Press Association Sport.

 

The training ground bust-up took place on Tuesday, with players told of Barton's temporary ban on Thursday.

 

Midfielder Barton, 34, is expected to miss Saturday's home Premiership match with Ross County.

 

He moved to Ibrox from Burnley in the summer and has made eight appearances.

 

Halliday, 24, was a mainstay of the Rangers midfield in the Championship last season but has been on the bench in the past two top-flight matches.

 

Barton signed a two-year contract in May, choosing a new challenge in Glasgow ahead of the offer of new terms at Turf Moor.

 

He was Burnley's player of the year as they won the Championship title to return to the Premier League.

 

"I'm coming up here to be the best player in the country," he announced on the day he signed for Mark Warburton's Rangers.

 

At his Thursday media conference, Warburton said the media reaction to his side's 5-1 loss at Celtic last weekend had been overly negative, but made no mention of Barton's absence from training.

Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson says there is "a nastiness" attached to Aberdeen versus Rangers fixtures as the teams prepare to meet for the first time in four years on Sunday.

 

Rangers travel to face the Dons after a difficult start to the season, and Ferguson says it was not always an enjoyable experience at Pittodrie.

 

"It is a place you go to and you don't feel very welcome," said Ferguson.

 

"There is a nastiness about the fixture."

 

 

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound, the Clyde manager added: "That's not with the staff. They are fine. It's with the fans.

 

"Obviously it goes back to the days of what happened with (Ian) Durrant.

 

"I always found it a very difficult place to go and especially now with Del (manager Derek McInnes) being there, I watched their game against Dundee, and they are back firing.

 

"They are looking good. The front three I really like - Hayes, McGinn and Rooney are always looking a threat.

I am in a job I want to retire from (I've got 30 years to go though). Or certainly, I can't imagine being in it for the rest of my career and beyond. I'm good at it and thought I enjoyed it more than I actually do. It is my own company however, and I have commitments to others, which means I can't just up-sticks without consideration. I've also set my lifestyle at an unnecessary expensive level, which I'd need to take care of too - which would have a direct impact on my better half. I don't spend a lot now and I don't have a huge mortgage and I own all my cars and have no credit cards and such like - I'm in a good place (and I get a 3 day weekend). To be honest, there's no one thing I want to do either. I design software, which I'm good at and can sell, but I don't enjoy it enough for full time and I also enjoy furniture making and guitar playing, but I'm probably not good enough (or I'd have to sell out) at either to make a good living. Furthermore, my wife is in a job she doesn't like, so we'd have to both give up and both do something new in order to keep us both happy, which is harder for her than it is me. That said, there are people in far worse positions, and I could cope for another 5 or so years no bother by which time our mortgage wid be near paid off, so I'm not complaining. I think the worst thing about my job, and most office jobs, is that they have no tangible benefit. There'll be thousands, if not millions, of folk who's jobs don't benefit society and are essentially just a waste of resources. Most folk aren't aware of it though. I choose just to not let it bother me, mainly because I've made a conscious choice to remain in what I'm doing.
