I was chatting to a younger Dons fan the other night and telling them about some of the players who won us the ECWC.  I was explaining that McLeish was a very classy centre half and I was asked for comparisons with any players playing today.  I suggested there was perhaps similarities to the likes of (Rio) Fedinand or Pique.

 

Which got me thinking, who in world football today could we compare to some of the team who won us the ECWC?

From what I have seen of weir there was a certain cruyffness about the way he beat men and distributed the ball.  Nests isn't a bad shout for miller to be fair, he def had a bit of an Italian style wig regards to knowing when to make a tactical foul

Rougvie was hardly unique though. He was probably THE stereotypical 80s full back. An athlete with tree trunk legs who'd bomb about all day. Stuart Pearce, Viv Anderson, Mel Sterland, Gary Stevens types.

 

I'd say there has been a move away from that type of fullback though the boy Ivanovic fae Chelsea is a possible.

I would have thought Jerome Boateng was a bit of a throw back to an '80s full back at least in stature and physicality.

Interesting one. Gabriele Marcotti has stated on more than one occasion that Willie Miller was a better player than Baresi.  I can see the comparison though.

We need to push to get Miller in the FIFA 12 classic XI team

But in my eyes those parts, the Gothenburg Legends, are heroes and the these cunts from today couldn't hold a torch to them.
