Mulgrew set to join Sheffield United

Published: 12/06/2010

ABERDEEN defender Charlie Mulgrew is expected to seal his departure from Pittodrie next week when he signs for Sheffield United.

The former Scotland under-21 international has verbally agreed a three-year deal with the English Championship club and will complete the formalities upon his return from holiday in Turkey.

Mulgrew, who joined the Dons from Wolves two years ago, has offers from other clubs in England, Brentford and Huddersfield, as well as Portuguese club Maritimo, but has decided to link-up with Blades manager Kevin Blackwell following the offer of a three-year contract.

Blackwell said: “He is a player we are interested in but it is at a delicate stage.

“He has been on our radar for a while, although his agent is talking to other clubs.”

Aberdeen have added another fixture to their pre-season campaign.

The Dons will head to Glebe Park to face Brechin City in the David Will memorial match on Tuesday, August 3 (kick-off 7.45pm).

Mark McGhee’s men face Fraserburgh, Peterhead and Dunfermline before heading for a week in England from July 23 where they will play against Tamworth, Port Vale and Brighton and Hove Albion.

They return to the north-east ahead of the Scottish Premier League kick off on August 14.

I wonder if he'll be a centre half or left back, or bench warmer of course.

He didn't give a fuck about the abuse that day and will be even less bothered if he ends up doubling his money at Celtic. I am in the minority but I think at Celtic and the way they play he would be a decent squad player for them, as folk have said he's not a great defender but Celtic rarely defend as much as you'd expect Aberdeen to defend.

That's if they even play him in defence.  I always thought Mulgrew looked more comfortable in midfield.  Did he not earn the majority if his Scotland U-21 caps from midfield?

Decision time for Aberdeen FC star Mulgrew

Charlie set for Pittodrie exit

CHARLIE Mulgrew is expected to make a final decision on his future this week.

Celtic have been linked with a move for the out-of-contract Aberdeen FC player, who can leave Pittodrie for no fee.

English Championship side Sheffield United are also reportedly interested in the defender, as are unnamed foreign clubs.

But if the Parkhead club want to sign the player, they have been told to act fast as he wants the situation resolved quickly.

Just shows where the SPL is nowadays when the hoops are after one of our fairly lacklustre players. As has already been said, not an accomplished defender by any means and short on concentration, pace and effort. He doesn't improve them at all but him leaving weakens us.

love the way that article changes from 'hes going to celtic' to 'theres been interest from celtic'

Think mulgrew has really shot himself in the foot. Hears he could go to celtic so bumps up his wages demands even further at Sheff United. They say sod off and then Celtic do the same (I hope) and its back down to earth with a bigger bang for the man who doesnt give a fuck

:lolabove:

It's the least he deserves

If he goes to rasellic he will do well to get the blazer off.

I thought he'd already signed with Celtic???

Fuck this...we really can't afford to laugh until this cunt is confirmed gone!

As I said earlier, doesn't improve them much if at all. Bit parter.

In the next Scotland squad then  ::)

LOL at celtic

LOL at celtic

Exactly.

They might as well start lining up Lennons replacement if this is the kind of player they sign.

Celtic have been looking to bolster their defensive options following the departure of Lee Naylor and Danny Fox

Now they've signed Mulgrew they can think about defenders.

Cue rasellic getting loads of dodgy free kicks in "Mulgrew territory"?

Can't get free kicks on the bench.

Aye, poor defender, poor attacker, excellent left foot yet last season, couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo. I would assume Mulgrew will be mainly used to warm the bench.

Mulgrew had a new arsehole ripped open by Wallcott at the Emirates today I am reliably informed. Nice.

from the 40 mins I saw he was fucking horrendous.  Looked even slower than he was last season and generally did not have a fucking clue.

To be fair, Mulgrew won't be playing players the class of Walcott every week in the SPL. However, I'd pretty confident if we had a fully fit Pawlett facing him, given that he could probably give Charles a ten yard headstart and still comfortably beat him in a foot race.

If Mulgrew is going to go into the season as Celtic's first choice LB, then Lennon must be dafter than I thought.

Walcott's not a great player. He's fast, but he's not an intelligent player.  Mulgrew was wandering around looking lost and incredibly slow (even when he wasn't up against Walcott).

Agree about Pawlett, although I'd rather he ran at him with the ball at his feet, I reckon Mulgrew would end up with twisted blood and sitting on his arse for most of the game.

Just what I was about to post. Wallcott is a decent player but not that good. Could be a long, hard, funny season ahead for Mulgrew!
