Can some one explain the rating system and how it works / is calculated?

If someone applauds a post you make you gain a point, if someone boos it then you get a minus. The options to vote are just under the rating.

I tried a trick like that once. Prepare for your ratings to fall heavily in the next few days.

You can't. It's just a function that allows people to agree or disagree with you. Sometimes, someone will make it quite clear when they have booed you by the fact they disagree with what you've said. I think Edinburghdon's post is quite obvious though

Ahh just had a look under the bonnet of the site and the new software only allows you to vote on karma if you have a minimum of 50 posts.

I can see the ratings, I just don't have the boo or applaud bit anymore. I'm probably being very thick.
