  1. We have a team this year with the guile and determination that has been lacking for a number of years.

DM definitely seems to be doing something right and the players seem to want to play for him.

Lets see how we perform against racellicbyraway  but I'm starting to feel quietly confident- keep it up boys!

That will be the true measure.

Expect we'll end up heart-broken, as per...?  :-\

But hey, two games in, two wins and giving it, 'Bring on the champions!'. Nice start to the season

  2. Big bandy-legged Jim is the best keeper we had. Theo was great though, don't get me wrong.

It's possibly a bit like which Dr Who you prefer (Tom Baker); has a lot to do with when you were most interested yourself I guess.

Who'd come third is a more difficult question...?

  3. Dissapointed at the focus of youth development being North East. Scotland is a pretty small country and cannot see why we would not be able to cover the whole country.

I actually disagree with this. Part of the problem at the Dons is that a 'local' club does seem to sign most of its players from the Central Belt or further south, or abroad.

The club should be seen as the place were talented kids from the 'local' area can get a chance to shine. A club that is deliberately of an Aberdonian or 'North East Scottish' identity could pull in more talented NE youngsters and more punters?

We'd still end up signing players from the Central Belt, of course, seeing as most Scottish people do live there, but having a core of 4 or 5 really good 'local' lads in the first team would be great, would it not? There's enough of a pool in the NE of Scotland to produce a decent SPL side surely?!?

I think we've actually been guilty of letting a few 'local' boys slip through our fingers over the years (can't actually come up with any names right enough!), so concentrating our efforts there could pay dividends, I reckon?

  4. Langfield is not the perfect keeper, but you would have to say that he rescues more defensive howlers by the rest of the team than he makes blunders himself?

True, goal-keeping blunders tend to result in a goal being given away, and I've cursed him with the best of us but I'm not sure how many better keepers there actually are in the SPL?

I guess it's the fact that they appear to come up most often in 'important' matches that is the worry...

  5. Last night was one of the most frustrating 2 and a bit hours ever!

Listening to Celtic pump St Johnstone, whilst Aberdeen toiled away undescribed and rarely updated was bad enough. To then lose a penalty shoot out that was only half commented on was the last straw.

Demonstrated that we still have a long way to go before we can claim to be 'best of the rest'. Also saved some folks yet another expensive and most likely disappointing trip to Hampden, right enough.

Some weird substitutions and formation/positional changes from what little I heard of the game as well. Broon seemed to change the defence around at least 3 times?!

Ach well, about time we lowered our ridiculous expectations anyway....

  6. @btr and tf

Can't quote you guys for some reason, but should clarify that I am not seeking to defend Langfield's performance or argue that he is deserving of playing for the Dons.

I guess I am just at the stage where I actively expect anyone signed for us to be well below par!

Langfield did look like he was going to make a decent keeper at one stage, but then we thought Diamond was going to go on to bigger and better things...

I was just so shocked at the level of abuse (mostly away from this site) that I guess I sided with him more than I would have had I not read all of that. I mean, this was his first competitive game in how long? It was a proper schoolboy error, but it was only one error and it just seems some folk were waiting to jump all over him. Had he made the same mistake, but our midfield or attack had performed well and we had still got a draw or a win, a lot of what has been said would not have been. So I guess what I am getting round to saying is that a big mistake from a goalie is still just a mistake. He didn't shit in anybody's shoes or whatever, and it's not his fault we couldn't have scored with a blank cheque the other day.

We do certainly need a new keeper though. No argument from me there.

I just wouldn't have a clue where we would find one or how long we would be able to hang on to anyone better than those we already have (a problem that extends to all areas of the pitch really).

Dropping Langfield and replacing him with the twit(terer) now could be counter-productive. J Brown aint much (if any) better than Clangers and is also (it would seem) a bit of a fanny. We could end up with two useless keepers, neither with any confidence and a really, really depressing start to the season!
