Have organised a stagger in Amsterdam, but stuck for a reasonable restaurant for the first night. Want to at least have a few hours of pretend class before descending into anarchy. Anyone got any recommendations?

I don't have any specific recommendations. But I'd recommend you stay away from the more touristy parts. Not that you can't get a good meal in the touristy parts.. you'll just pay a fortune for it.

Back on topic, always found the Dam tricky for food, but I'm sure if you wander away from the touristy areas you must find some gems.

This place is small too, the food is pretty decent.  Very central.
