Both out of this world players in a total league of their own (along with Niall McGinn, obviously). Domestically I think it's hard to separate them but I'm going to say Messi shades it because I feel he performs that bit more consistently on the big stages of domestic and international football.

I went Ronaldo but you could ask me the same question every day for the next year and you would probably get a different answer more times than not.  It's so hard to choose because they have such different styles.  I've gone with Ronaldo for his desire.  His refusal to rest on his laurels even though he has reached a very sparkling peak, the way he still sets out every morning to be better than he was yesterday.

Neither have done it at a World Cup and that is disappointing. Messi winning player of the tournament was an utter sham, even he looked embarrassed by it - there were probably about 7 players in the Germany team alone who were more deserving.

Both brilliant players, Ronaldo is the more all round player, but Messi is better at what he specialises in. I'd say they're about even. If Ronaldo wasn't such a preening, arrogant, self loving tit of a man, more people would say he was better, but for some reason people bring these things into it when talking about football ability alone.

Do people still think that? All I ever read on t'internet and social media about Ronaldo is about how generous he is with his time and money to fans and charities. Undoubtedly he's gone up in my estimation as a human being.

Since his move to Real Madrid and his subsequent form he's been unstoppable. His performance at Anfield the other week there (the last time I saw him play) was absolutely brilliant.

And I don't think many will agree regarding the POTT award for Messi at the World Cup. Just goes to show just how loudly money talks. There was probably a whole team of players more worthy.

I'd go further than that.  Thought the whole German team alone (starting XI) were ahead of him.  But yes, doubt many would disagree that it was a farcical and emblematic award by FIFA.

I voted for Messi, but for pretty much the reasons BB stated.  It's not a slight against Ronaldo though as I think I actually prefer watching him play.

Yes i think they do, because a lot of folk only see the guy on the pitch.

I'd also have said he was pretty unstoppable in his last few seasons at United. Not quite at the level he reached at Real but he was clearly one of the best in the world while he was at United.
