Fallon: 'Dons missing out on top six would make season a failure'

Aberdeen striker Rory Fallon believes anything less than a top six finish will be a failure for the Dons this season.

New Zealander Fallon is entering the final year of his contract at Pittodrie and has been encouraged by the team's pre-season form.

Celtic await Craig Brown's men on the opening day of the season in a game Fallon believes will show how far the squad has come over the summer.

Fallon said the Dons have been unlucky to come out as losers in the past two encounters with Neil Lennon’s outfit and, with confidence is high around the Dons dressing room, belief is strong that they can run the reigning champions close.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the 30-year-old hitman said that the players look forward to the big games and will relish their match-ups with the Hoops while Rangers re-build from Division Three.

Fallon said: “It’s disappointing we won’t go to Ibrox and play against such a big team but it is a club which must start at the bottom again and work its way back up.

“All I’m interested in is my club and the first match of the season against Celtic which will be our toughest game of the season. Celtic are going to be flying as defending champions and they will want to beat us.

“We felt we could have beaten them on a couple of occasions last season and we have got to work hard and believe we can this time.

“Our first five games will be where we can judge whether we are going to have a good season. We have a strong squad and are good enough for the top six.

“If we don’t make it then that won’t be good enough.”
