Nigel Clough has confirmed Derby County will hold talks with Russell Anderson about extending his contract.
The 31-year-old defender has impressed at Pride Park since joining the Rams in January on a deal until the end of the season after having his contract cancelled following a forgettable spell at Sunderland.
With Derby's Championship status virtually secured after Saturday's goalless draw at Barnsley, Clough revealed he will now begin negotiations with the former Aberdeen centre-half over a new deal.
"The priority is to sort Russell out," said the Rams boss. "We said if we got a point we would sit down this week so we will be doing that and seeing if we can get him sorted out for next season and maybe beyond.
"Russell says he has enjoyed it here and says he wants to stay. He wants to play and we give him that opportunity.
"Not many clubs at our level can match what we can offer in terms of 30,000 fans watching at Pride Park, our training facilities and our ambition.
"Against Barnsley, Russell was very steady again and very reliable. He won his headers, made his clearances and does not make many mistakes. He is forging a good solid partnership with Shaun Barker."
So no excuses for suggesting Anderson to come back as the messiah during the summer.
