ABERDEEN manager Jimmy Calderwood wants the suffering Aberdeen supporters to channel their disappointment at the team’s Scottish Cup exit to positive use by backing their team in the race for Europe.
The Dons manager was out of the country when the AFC Supporters Society sent an open letter to director of football Willie Miller demanding he dismiss the manager, but the call did not go unheard.
The Dons can secure their place in the top six by beating Motherwell on Saturday and Calderwood wants his players to deliver as he looks to make amends for the quarter-final cup exit against Dunfermline.
He said: “There has been a strong reaction to the Scottish Cup exit in the last week but the Aberdeen fans I met in Amsterdam on Saturday were all really supportive. The Scotland supporters in Holland were fabulous and we need a similar show of support for the team at Aberdeen. The break for everyone has been good but we need to get back to winning ways on Saturday at Motherwell.
“If we win at Fir Park then we will be in the top six and that will allow us to concentrate on trying to catch Hearts for third place. It is so close behind Hearts and it is going to be a blow to the club which misses out. We have to make sure it is not us.â€
Lee Miller and Lee Mair returned to training yesterday. Darren Mackie is expected to resume training this week, but Stuart Duff is ill.
Calderwood will be hoping Chris Maguire and Javan Vidal return fully fit on Thursday from under-21 international duty with Scotland and England respectively.
