Teletext Nostalgia

You'll need to be of a certain vintage to remember the good old days in the 80's & 90's before the explosion of the internet and instant news to appreciate this. If you are you'll recollect the excitement of constantly refreshing teletext to get updated football scores and also the latest football news.

I was sent this by a mate down south as he thought I'd be interested. Someone has re-created the teletext features and pages as an app for your mobile and although in its infancy it is expected to grow as more and more features are added. I suspect it'll only be of interest to the older ones of us that remember it from its halcyon days.

Many a game, particularly midweek ones when there was no radio coverage and this was the only means to get instant (well fairly instant updates) on how your team were getting on.

Page 302 was the BBC football index page.

ITV brought out a service also, memory seems to tell me their home page might have been 140 🤔

I've downloaded and will be using it in the future

Anyone else got memories of teletext usage for the football

For whatever reason I couldnt get any coverage of the home game against Bohemians in the highlands. Radio Scotland MW was never the strongest signal and it might not even have been covered by the BBC.

Only way to follow the game was on teletext.

At 90mins with the dons 1-0 up I clicked refresh.

That refresh took 15mins to work and with no internet or mobile phones etc I refused to believe the final score till North Tonight showed the goals

I hear you Al 😍

Love it. Superb!

My tv at home wasn’t modern enough for such advanced tech. Wasn’t until college until I could access such amazing features! Reminds me of playing football manager, not championship manager, with Paul mariner, Peter withe, Eric gates I think? Maybe a young John Wark?? It was around that time I started to neglect subbuteo.

I think the Dons v Morton (Dodds hattrick, Windass with four in extra time I think?) game might have been the last one I remember on Teletext. Was in the garioch sports centre and the scores were coming through. Unless it was the Motherwell 6-5 game. It would have been a Wednesday night. I was probably pished, having been to the boozer before football training, of course. Maybe '97. Grew up with it though, it was a very tense way to get the fitba score.

One of my work colleagues gave me a mug with this on it at Christmas. I cannot say I remember many match scores coming through on Ceefax as I was usually at the games.

I always loved 312 for the news. Feel like my football knowledge was a lot more varied at that time! Think I mind watching the Hibs cup semi game on teletext last.

Am I right in thinking that 390 was specifically Scottish football 🤔

That was the erotic thrillers page I believe.

Same thing surely 😜

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

I mind watching the 6-5 Motherwell game on Ceefax.

I thought the person doing the typing had been sniffing glue or something. It seems mad that it was the only way for me to see how the Dons were doing when I was living in England. That and the Pittodrie Profile getting sent down every month, along with the odd Green Final and the Daily Record.

Now I can just pull out a wee device from my pocket and curse under my breath when I see that we've conceded again.

What a cracking thread.

I thought my coupon was up one Saturday, as Brighton had been beaten by Shrewsbury, in the old 4th division, according to Ceefax.

Turns up at Willie Hills, expecting hundreds of pounds, only to find out Kerry Mayo had scored a late equaliser for Brighton and busting my coupon.

Moral of the story. Wait for the classified results.
