  1. Aberdeen v Gretna

    Aberdeen v St Mirren

    Inverness CT v Aberdeen

    Aberdeen v Falkirk

This run of ties is the basis for my current optimistic streak. 12 points entirely achievable, coupled with a win on Wednesday then we are back in the mix. Ironically, if we won and kick started our revival then this would be against McGhee the person most folk would like to see as Aberdeen boss. How Hibs and Motherwell do in their visits to Falkirk is important - I can see that Caley fixture being a crunch tie for us..

    Gretna - surely...

    St Mirren - surely..

ICT - Always tricky but if Lovell is ever going to play for us again rest him until the last 20 minutes of this game.

Falkirk - whats that ridiculous record again...

  2. Lets hope the real AFC are the version we all hope for - the team that showed the ability of being able to hold down a decent top half finish in the league prior to January, regardless of type of performance.

Form determines how well a team do - you cannot take away ability. However limited we may think it is just now - it is there. Things may look a lot different in a months time, granted they may be also worse but am ever optimistic in the face of adversity, you cannot excuse the Dons of not drilling that attribute into each and every fan.

Saying that then Chris Clark and Michael Hart could be counted as the real AFC in the first half of the season and since most think that Maybury is an adequate like for like with Hart, then Chris Clark must be the real AFC and the one deciding factor in our decline. He was evidently a witch doctor and cursed us as he left.

  3. Another dismal defeat today  :(

JC will undoubtedly point towards the cost of playing in Europe on our team, in terms of fitness, injuries, fatigue - to an extent I fully agree with this - we do not have the required depth.

Although the squad is knackered - tactics today were bordering on the bizarre. ??? It is almost as if JC is out to hang himself?

Very Bizarre if not unexpected result.

Would the real Aberdeen FC please turn up next month.

  5. Our much maligned Captain has fairly been putting in a shift with the press this weekend.. Interesting stuff too.

    Recent Form

"The two results before Bayern had been coming for a number of weeks," said Scott Severin, Aberdeen's captain. "We had been below average but we were grinding out results and points but it finally caught up with us. We have found it hard to adjust to playing so many games. I think we've played 10 more games compared to this point last season. It takes its toll."

About Josh Walker and His Efforts as Captain

The week of the cup game he strolled into our pre-match lunch and had a bit of a swagger. I thought 'he thinks he's a bit of a player' but it's turned out that he is doing the business for us. If you look at the guys that have come through at Middlesbrough, I think he can become another product of their youth system and go on to bigger and better things. To be honest, there are a few of them in there who have got that swagger but maybe sometimes it needs to get knocked out of them. It's just the way the young boys are these days. They're loud and that can be good for the dressing room but the main thing is that they all do it on the pitch and we start picking up points. We have a young squad and I know its my first season as captain but I need to be more vocal. Dare I say Seve learning a thing or 2 from young Josh.

    Seve on Tactics

But, for Aberdeen now there is little to fear. "It's always been the same in Europe this season," said Severin. "We're allowed to go and have a go at them. The manager doesn't put any fear into us, we're allowed to attack them, try and score goals, if you keep a clean sheet then even better''.

Let's hope the European version of Aberdeen plays from now on in the SPL, the board realises we need a little more depth in the squad and that he finds his vocal chords..

  6. It certainly looks that way  - am hoping they have not listed this on the wrong page though. :hammer:

Beeb were maintaining it would be live text and live commentary. Think via this and other forums we have fairly bombarded them with abuse.

Hopefully someone at the beeb will confirm on Monday the truth or if possible somebody should email sportsound or phone them this afternoon to clarify.

  7. Yup am in agreement with TF here.

Bayern midfield was outstanding, Ottl was a class act. He sat deep, nailed absoultely every pass possible dictated tempo - defo their MOTM.

You cant appreciate the fluidity of the movement of Bayern through midfield fully on TV, It was different class. They just dragged us everywhere. Severin appeared anonymous because he was doing a graft shift - similar to a role we all took Chris Clark for granted for - myself included.

Walker is still somewhat inexperienced and Severin on more than one occasion filled in the gaps left by Josh being out of position. Maybury and  Nicholson and our right side sewn up and I really hope we stay with them there.

Really cannot discredit Seve for Thursday am afraid - suffice to say if he had a shit game they would have been through us more.

  8. TY to A1 on the suicide board for the heads up.

Will the real Aberdeen please stand up. That will be Jimmy Calderwood’s demand as he gathers his players in the Easter Road dressing-room before tomorrow’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Hibernian.

For, despite Aberdeen’s sparkling performance during their “in-your-face†approach to Thursday night’s Uefa Cup draw with Bayern Munich at Pittodrie, the manager was still at a loss yesterday to explain their inconsistency on the domestic front.

Their failure to string together a run of results was, he conceded, as frustrating a part of his or any other manager’s job, and while the smile was back on his face following a memorable 2-2 draw with the stars of Bayern, his thoughts were firmly on climbing the league table in order to once more finish third and compete in next season’s Uefa Cup competition.

“We have had no consistency whatsoever in our team selections and none in our game,†he said. “It’s very frustrating because we have always been consistent since I came here. It drives you mad, although much of it has to do with the injury situation. We haven’t had a settled side all season.â€

    Scottish Premier League previews

It was teenagers Josh Walker and Sone Aluko, Aberdeen’s goalscorers on Thursday, who grabbed the headlines in a gritty and thrilling display. Yet, they are players on loan only until the end of the season, from Middlesborough and Birmingham City, respectively, and while Calderwood would love to have the England youth players at Pittodrie much longer, he accepted the unlikelihood of that.

“The Premiership is a league of big, physical players,†he added, “and they are not ready for that at the moment. Football-wise they are but it is perhaps too physical for them.

“Some people think you are on a jolly when you travel to England in midweek to watch all these games but you don’t get back until the middle of the night and you drive through all kinds of weather through The Shap and Kendal and all those kind of places, all in your search for new players. But when you get two jewels like Josh and Sone then it’s worthwhile, and there will be a few more.

“That kind of market is good. John Hughes has used it at Falkirk and picked of Anthony Stokes from Arsenal and he was later sold by Arsène Wenger for £2 million.

“Josh and Sone will go back down the road as better players and it is ideal for Scottish clubs at our level and ideal for their own clubs.â€

Aluko, used sparingly since his arrival, was the man of the match against Bayern and has proved hugely popular with the Aberdeen fans as a winger who can run at defenders and put them on the back foot.

The deal with Aberdeen was brokered by Eric Black, a hero of the Pittodrie side that won the Cup Winners’ Cup 25 years ago, who was the Birmingham assistant manager and had Aoluko under his wing.

“Eric was a little bit worried about Sone’s strength,†Calerwood added, “though not about his football ability. I spoke to a few people in the England set-up about him and everyone was very positive about him so we decided to bring him here and he’s not done too badly.

“The atmosphere in the ground on Thursday night was fantastic and you can’t fail when it’s like that. We had nothing to lose but points to prove to ourselves and to others.â€

Possibly the most sensible chat Jc has ever spewed out with hints of more class acts to come north fingers crossed...

  9. We need to start treating every league game like a cup final tie now.

    Third is a must.

My good Hibee friend maintains thats Fletchers hat trick aside Hibs were gash mid week. Guess the 2 goals back for Gretna proves this.

Really hope the European version of Aberdeen turns up on Sunday and not the SPL- Away version.

    Here's to hammering em

    Still Grinning ? I am.. ;D

  10. I just got a reply from the beeb after having a whinge at them..

'We have featured Aberdeen six times over the course of the tournament

live on tv and only four Rangers games so far and we will be offering

live radio and online commentary on next week's Aberdeen match. In

terms of television coverage these decisions are always difficult and

affected by a number of factors and while football is very popular with

the viewing audience in Scotland we also have to think of the wider

audience, which would not respond favourably to football on both

channels given there is a significant overlap in the match times.'

Promptly replied reminding them that in this day and age the red button service is there to give viewers the choice.

C'mon beeb you know it makes sense. Think afc are approaching Sky and Setanta to see if they are going to pick up the tie.

  11. Josh Walker - massive potential - chucked in at deep end big time, currently looks out of depth - up against Scotty Broon today and Barry Nic off so still not seen best in him.

Maguire - dont know if he will come good - chucked on off bench - never does much - would prefer Lovell starting, another spell in reserves in settled position not onto the wing may help.

Richard Foster - good potential - lets get him nailed to one position and let him make it vs being used as utility player. Confidence player and struggles when things going against us. Defensive game has lost confidence in his pace and ability to burn other players.

In reality they are reserve players but due to our depth of squad are in our first team - Maguire and Walker more so than Foster who I think has potential to be capable - the other 2 having youth up against them.

Charlatans - maybe a bit harsh.

  12. Quite clearly not.

Yes I know Calderwood has his detractors and to be honest he has given them plenty of ammunition.

But in a season when we recopu the best part of 1.5 mil in tfr fees and a lucrative european run I would expect to see contracts to meet players demands and furthermore a defender to replace Anderson coming in during January - instead of bargain basement pish, protracted contract wrangles and losing 2 first team players.

Debt or no debt it is without question there is no ambition showing from Milne.

Calderwood can only do so much..
