What were you doing when France '98 was on? Just out of interest.

I was 16 years old and in the middle of my exams. I didn't let anything important like revision get in my way of enjoying the tournament. I remember watching the opening game (v Brazil) and being more nervous for a football match than ever before. I thought we would get battered when they scored early, but we gave a good showing.

I don't really recall watching the other two games, but I'm sure I did. I had a wallchart out of the Daily Record, which I diligently filled in after every game.

I had just left school and was about to turn 18 later that summer. Watched the Brazil game at my pal's with a carry out, the Norway game in the pub with my old fla and the Morocco disaster at another pal's with another carry out. Other than the Morocco result, it was a glorious couple of weeks with nothing else to do but watch football.

Brazil game was closed door event for me at one of my client's pub with bagpipes pre match and free food and bar all day. As I worked for a brewer at the time I'm sure I sent in six kegs of lager f.o.c. as my contribution to the day.

Halcyon days 😉

Still have no recollection of getting home that day and reckon I must have watched the other two games at home with the kids

I was at the game.

Opening ceremony was fckg bizarre - a bit like the drugged-up pre-school stuff on the TV thread I suspect.

Fish was selling programmes. (The singer not a fish although that would have fit with the drugged-up theme)

Scotland had maybe 5k fans Brazil 10k and the rest was corporate.

After the game there was young girls in suits holding up signs with Coca-Cola and Ceba-Geigy etc. for guys in suits to gather at.

Flew to Paris the morning of the Brazil game. Watched game in Stade de France . Then next morning hauled my hungover corpse on to a train to Bordeaux. There followed 15 days on the pish wandering across France that my liver has probably never fully recovered from. Only had a SFA ticket for Brazil game but plan of getting to Bordeaux early paid off and got tickets for Norway game plus a contact that got us tickets for the game in St Etienne. Even had it set with work to extend holiday if we got through plus a ticket to get down to Marseille if we got through. Was brilliant trip mixing with fans from all over.

Cannot see US being anything like that experience.

Sounds brilliant mate

You are clearly older than I thought though 😂

Apparently, Bordeaux matched its annual beer sales on the day of the game.

Even by Scotland standards it was a really boozy day.

Great city though have been back since though a little more temperate.

I love Bordeaux their wine festival is tremendous

My daughters at the time were 2 and 4 and I think we were in Majorca for the Brazil game

Stayed in a Formule 1 - cheap motel with very small rooms. I think there was 4 of us?

In the room next door was some loons from Peterhead. There was maybe 10 of them? They had booked 2 rooms but one of their group had 'got lucky'.

They had some kind of pact so the amorous couple got one room leaving the rest to share the other one 🤣

Sadly I am old enough to been in Italy in 90 as a teenager. Made 96 and 98 and assumed every 2nd year would be like this.

I was living in Japan and will have watched the games on telly at stupid times of day probably. The missus is an England supporter so my main recollection is her lying on the floor banging her fists off the carpet when they lost on penalties. I did my best to appear sympathetic...

I was 26.............which makes me feel really old now, as I thought I was 18 or 19!!!!

I don't remember much. I do remember thinking we would finally get out of a group stage. Then being not in the least bit surprised when we didn't. Then enjoyong the rest of the tournament without the added worry of how we were getting on. And being able to enjoy all the games at a decent time.

I also remember not remembering much as I was watching the bulk of it pissed at various friends flats.

I gave more of a hoot about international football then.

I was 25, living in Nashville and working in ‘soccer’ full time. Fun city and fun time in life. Saying that, was in the process of packing for Los Angeles and a big move that summer.

dont remember a lot but I do remember being asked multiple times about burley and leighton missing team, and that being a norm in Scotland. Also remember being gutted to lose to Morocco, a very similar feeling to losing to Costa Rica in 1990. Hoping to avoid that feeling this time around.

I was 19 and a student, I really wanted to go but just couldn't afford it. Like so many other people of my generation I just thought "I'll just go to the next one" and given we had qualified for 4 of the 5 tournaments in the 90s I didn't think I would be waiting this long.

Watched all games in the pub with pals.  My lasting memory of the tournament was my frustration at Brown's obsession with playing Burley at rwb with Darren Jackson behind the strikers when Burley clearly should have been there and Macnamara at rwb.   Also, why the fuck would you take Jackson and not Eoin Jess 🤦
