Apparently a light covering of snow coupled with a cold wind down in Englandshire now constitutes "Arctic conditions".

Perhaps someone should tell them that the average Arctic temperature in February is a balmy -34°C and that plenty of places far further south than the UK also experience these exact same conditions year in, year out without becoming such a load of whining, mincing "woe is me" fannies when they need to scrape their fucking windscreen in the morning.

"Arctic condition"... Jesus fucking wept. At what point eactly did this country metamorphose into such a fucking cringeworthy embarrassment?

That's the English for you, if you've to wear gloves it's time to start driving everywhere at 15mph and braking suddenly if a car 500 yards in front of you has had to stop at a junction.

And fuck me if there's a snow flake fluttering down when you look out the window in the morning, you better get on the phone to work to let them know you're snowed in, and get down Asda to buy a trolley load of soup.

Hadn't you noticed that the weather is frickin' apocalyptic, maaan?

It's a miracle that any of us are still alive, if the tone of the media is anything to go by.

Apparently the pavements in Notting Hill are so slushy that the residents simply can't reach the 4x4 to get to Harrods & Harvey Nicks, and are therefore on the verge of cannibalism.

Caught a bit of news on the telly this morning while having breakfast. Reporter in SE england claims 6-7 inches of snow there- it was barely over the toes of her boots. What kind of fucking inches was that then? 6 cm maybe, but even that looked like it would be at a push.

It's been snowing here in Burton on Trent since yesterday. The place is gripped by panic; people are running around the streets in a state of panic, there are overturned cars on fire everywhere, shops are being looted and everything. And there was no warning, they've not been saying on the weather for the last four days that it was going to snow or anything like that. I blame the credit crunch and Gordon Brown. >:(

Well, had to walk home due to the roads being grid locked and on the way some seeing some abysmal driving. Up to 3 inches at points on the pavements, along with a ford focus at one point sliding down the hill towards me. On that same hill cars were tailgating others. Quite a nice change from the bus.

SNOW MELTS, CLAIMS MET OFFICE
SNOW is a delicate substance made of tiny ice crystals and unlikely to last forever, the Met Office claimed last night.

Experts insisted the granular material had a soft and open structure that was very likely to turn into water, and was not an airborne member of the notoriously hardwearing diamond family.

As millions of Britons stocked up on anti-wolf equipment, climatologists claimed the snow would disappear within days as rising air temperatures resulted in the breakdown of its crystalline structure in a process they referred to as 'melting'.

A Met Office spokesman, said: "Snow is a notoriously unstable material, which is why we never use it to build bridges.

"Try picking it up, notice how the warmth of your hands makes it go soft and disappear. In fact, the only thing it is guaranteed to withstand is a 12-ton London bus."

He added: "Of course, there is always a chance this is the beginning of a hundred year winter that will only end when four unbearably smug public school children become our rulers after pushing their way through the back of a magic wardrobe, stealing some very expensive coats and befriending a talking lion who's actually Jesus."

But trainee solicitor and amateur survivalist Julian Cook said he was now prepared for a permanent, snow-based society after watching Sky News non-stop for 16 hours and reading the Daily Mail's 12-page supplement, Wolves! Everywhere!

He added: "Sssshhhhh! They can hear how fat you are."

The News coverage has been really disappointing, in that they are making a huge deal out of it, but at the same time its been hilarious when you get a live report from somebody standing in about 2 inches of snow in the south of England!

Snow has been very heavy in Aberdeen for last hour or so - I work in the middle of town and the road directly outside my office looks reasonably black, although thta's market street and covered by cars...

I would suggest the roads on outskirts of Aberdeen will be tricky right now.

Week 3: Goany just fuck it all off now. I'm sick of having wet feet, cold bones and my business getting royally fucked 'cos nea cunt wants to buy fucking bikes in the snow.  :hammer: :hammer:

No different time. Only remember getting up and pulling out thing that was giving me water in Munich. And did you all see me? What happened? I can't really remember. The last thing I can remember was buying eight pints for me and my friend. That was a bad idea. I spent like 100 euros that night. Lucky the next night was better but still made a fool of myself. And I didn't really notice if she was hot or not. Mum was beside me and I just pleaded to go home. Then I was pushed through to the ward and was like FFS have to spend a night here. I would recommend getting hospitalized in Germany if anywhere btw.

Drove through to Edinburgh on Sunday eveing, took 3 hours!

There were some tremendously poor examples of driving, cunts doing about 70 through 3 or 4 inches of sna, amazing.

The roads were perfectly passable with some care but nuggets like that could take out dozens of motors.

On Thur afternoon heading back from East Kilbride I passed 3 seperate accidents in little over a mile.  All very minor and obviously just minimal impact but the roads weren't that bad, and as TF says if you don't drive like an idiot you'll be fine.  Mind you if you have an idiot driving 3ft behind you like I did then it's just your luck whether the prick rear-ends you or not.

Sounds like gritters are yet another thing aberdeen council can't afford....in fact do they pay for/fund anything other than their own wages and the payments on the debt these days?

Thats being generous. The whole SE goes into meltdown at the mere thought of snow. There was huge panic because it was going to reach 0 and some areas -2. Some of my trains in the morning got delayed because of congestion and bad weather 2 days before...

Not that much snow on the ground but absolutely no sign of any gritters on the roads out to East Kilbride this am and pretty ropey conditions.

Also seems that as well as the roads being covered in ice they are now beginning to fall to bits due to the prolonged cold weather.  My route to work has a ridiculous number of pot holes at the best of times but it is going to destroy my car fairly rapidly at this rate

According to BBC forecasts the snow should stop on Wednesday even if the low temperatures don't.

I must be getting old. I hate the snow now. Aye it looks pretty but I hate driving in it and hate the thought of family and friends driving in it! I can't be arsed with the disruption either!

Agree wi Tom about the clowns driving without lights. The other night at about 5ish (dark!!) in town there was a big 4x4 hairing along the road in the snow wi nae lights on. Twat didn't even notice the countless cars furiously slashing their lights at him.  :hammer:

Got back to Aberdeen from London yesterday - bitterly cold down there but no snow as yet.

Day of annual leave today and have just spent two hours clearing the driveway and path of snow.  Hate doing that - but there are loads of middle-aged/older mannies seemingly having the time of their lives doing it. What the fuck is that all about? How can you enjoy shifting snow out of the way?!

;D Its almost a competition near me in BOD, they are up and at it from 7 in the morning clearing it as fast as they can, building as high a mound as possible at the end of their driveway blocking both the road and pavement.

Left Banchory at twelve yesterday. Cleared Aberdeen by one. Held up for an hour or so at Forfar but thought we had missed the worst but the bbc radio didn't feel the need to tell us all roads south of Perth were closed and that the A90 between Dundee and Perth was nose to tail and barely passable. Took 6 (six) hours to get from Glendoick to Perth (11 miles). Some utter fuck wits on both side of the road and amazing we didn't see any accidents. Just delighted I was able to find a bed at my sisters in Perth. Left Perth at about two today, A90 south to Dunblane was single file but reasonable although I hear it is closed again now. Finally back to the flat just after four. Twenty eight hours after we originally left Banchory.

A special mention to the partick WAG whose mercedes myself and 2 other guys eventually shoved out of the ice hole she had dug for herself. After finally getting it moving she drive about 30yards and then half pulled into another iced section, got out and asked if we had somehow jammed the bits of wood we used to lever her out under her car because she was 'all over the place'. Listening to the Scottish Govts version of Chemical Ali proclaiming how wonderful the response to todays snow was got me thinking a bit.  Clearly the councils and Government haven't learnt any significant lessons from the chaos last winter but is part of the problem not the shocking transport infrastructure in Scotland.  Outside the narrow Central Belt the train network is poor to non existant, the network for cargo worse.  Resulting in increased car and worst of all lorry traffic on the roads.  Lorries especially add hugely to the congestion and delays.  On top of that we have the main motorway in the country that is two lane for most if it's length, narrows into a bottle neck at the Clyde and is actually a dual carriage-way A-road at one of it's busiest stretches.  Roads north from Glasgow have been terrible for years and even when the M80 Moodiesburn by pass is finished much of it will also be two lane.  The whole place is a fucking farce.  1000s of folk stuck on the country's main arterial route for 10hours!!!  But they all did a good job according to Snow Ali
Title: Re: Sna

The populace also need to take responsibility. People should have snow chains for their tyres. They're mandatory in many European countries during winter months. The government can't account for the ignorant population's lack of preparation.

Snow chains is pushing it a bit.  The roads get destroyed as it is without fucking snow chains.  Fair enough perhaps if you are up in the Highlands but you shouldn't need fucking snow chains on the M8  :hammer:

Only one of those was me losing concentration. The rest were all caused by the actions of others. The fact there was an article on the BBC newswebsite giving instructions how to drive in the snow says alot for our society. People will still carry on driving as if there is no change to the conditions then get angry when theres an accident.

The woman whose car I helped push out today just did not understand that more power when your tyres have no grip will only make the situation worse and if by chance you do suddenly get grip you will lurch out of control. Then to actually stop in another patch of black ice and suggest we had possibly damaged her car because she was sliding about is worrying.
The people who were overtaking at random intervals at speeds over 50mph through slush so deep it scraped the bottom of your car and actually tailgating those infront of them. The 10 car lengths rule that was drilled into my head only applies to certain people apparently.
And of course the classic lack of headlights (silver or grey cars still seem to be the worst offenders) in blizzard or fog.

It is genuinly scary how stupid or unaware of the consequences of their own actions people are. Always someone elses fault when they fuck things up.

Anyway the issue with the transport infrastructure is a classic example of rival politics. I genuinly believe rival parties will cancel the others policies the second they get into power just to piss them off.

The Edinburgh trams springs to mind especially because the glasgow rail connection was cancelled to help fund them and now there are even rumours they will just cancel the whole project. People can accuse me of west coast or northern bias because I dont live in the capital but I cannot see any justification for them. Edinburgh has very decent bus service and the airport is next to a fucking railway so 10million could have built a spur and a bog standard station and walkway like at Prestwick. This could also have been done at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness all for less than the fucking trams. The A9, A96, M8, A82 and probably numerous other roads all need major upgrading. I think most if not all of the A9 could have been made dual carriageway for the current cost of the tram works.
Then there are the trains. The stupid single line between inverness and Pitlochry so there are only 4 trains a day from inverness to glasgow and inverness to edinburgh.

I beginning to think transport should be banned from election manifestos. it should be something that all parties just agree and can only change if everyone agrees it needs to (lack of funds etc). That way it ends scenarios like the SNP's 'edinburgh gets trams, inverness, Glasgow, Aberdeen, dundee lose their new roads, rail links etc the moment they are elected.

On the subject of tyres, my parents always get winter tyres, and that's in Holland.

I think I may need to invest in some.
The Minister did make an apology on the radio this morning but seemed to me, even at 11pm last night he had no grasp of the utter chaos and anger on the roads.

Also laughed at the Glasgow Council guy who said all main roads in the city were "black".  Well having just made it along Clarkston Rd I can categorically state the roads are in no way black and were actually better in East Kilbride which must surely be a first.

I did the same every winter when I lived in Aberdeen, put on a set of smaller wheels with narrower winter tyres to run Oct/Nov to Mar/Apr. Never had any troubles in the snow apart from dodging other dickheads on the road, usually driving a rear wheel drive car with wide summer tyres.

Some of my friends who had fancy powerful cars would tend to pick up a cheap small car for a couple of hundred quid to run over the winter. £400 for a 1.2 Clio with 6 months MOT works out cheaper than buying a set of winter tyres and saves your car getting all rusted because of the salt on the roads.

Many roads in Austria and Germany have been closed, and passengers stranded overnight in trains in Germany.

In Poland, over 50 people have been found dead, stranded in their cars, in the open countryside, and even in city centres.

Thousands of homes in Finland and Sweden have been without power for days.

A big part of the problem is, that regardless of how many snowploughs and gritters there is, if folk get stuck and abandon thier cars in a way that blocks the road, then they can't get through to clear the roads - which seems to have been part of the problem yesterday.  I don't know for sure yet what the problems were, but I'm sure my folks will let me know (they left Glasgow at 0940 yesterday and got home to Kintore at 0940 this morning!?).

The other issue yesterday seems to have been the weather - according to the weather forecasts, it was only supposed to last for a couple of hours - stopping around 0900 - but continued to fall into the afternoon and a lot heavier than had been predicted.

Too many folk don't know how to drive properly, never mind know how to drive properly in winter conditions; too many people think only of themselves, and show now consideration to any other road users.

True. The other problem is to do with individual accountability. All yer looney lefty socialistas will tell ye that if things go wrong in society - the 'state' can fix it and the state is there to help. This isn't in fact the whole story - people need to take individual responsibility. Bloody blame culture - the only people you can blame is yourself...

...and DHL - cunts. How come UPS, Match Couriers and the Royal Mail can all get me deliveries but DHL say the weather is a problem since last freakin Wednesday. I go over to DHL at Altens to find oot. They tell me they aren't delivering today... WTF?!?!? On the drive over I saw UPS, TNT, Royal Mail and Pegasus couriers all out today. DHL = dickheads. They still say another 2 days to get me my parcel. Wankers.

However, Frankie Boyle's gig went ahead at the SECC and approx. 4,500 turned up, 4,500 didn't make it.

None in Troon.
Couldn't make it today, but drove past the courses earlier and Lochgreen and Darley aren't even on winter greens as far as I could see

No, was thinking the other half of the weekend I'm not wasting.

Played Darley a couple of weeks back, greens were on and they were no bad at all but don't really like the course in general, fancy Lochgreen, never played it.

For the record Frozen Planet is absolutely superb and worth the licence fee alone IMO my opinion.

I wouldn't open my curtains if they were filming Frozen Planet in my back garden FFS sake.

The Met Office has warned that wintry weather could cause disruption to travel in some parts of Scotland on Thursday.

It has issued a yellow "be aware" alert covering parts of the Highlands, Moray, Aberdeenshire and Tayside.

Forecasters said snow could fall to depths of 10cm (3in) on ground above 150m (492ft) and to 15cm (5in) above 300m (984ft).

The north and north west could have occasional heavy snow showers.

Ice may also affect some areas, the Met Office said.

The yellow alert covers 00:00 to 23:59 on Thursday.

If only!

I was still on the way to my hotel at that point  :hammer:

My Nightbus broke down in/around Shadwell/Wapping (ish), but as Google Maps said it was about 2 miles from my Hotel, I figured it would easily be walkable before the next bus arrived half an hour later...

All was going well too until a gang of 3 yoofs started shouting at me and then chasing me with an umbrella (as you do). At that point I decided that a taxi was a fantastic idea for the rest of the way.

Tell me about it!

I checked outside about 7.30 and all seemed fine, but when I left about 8.30 snow everywhere..

The Lang Stracht was alright, just the bit between the roundabout at the end and the Kingswells roundabout that was bad.

It didn't help that there was a Lorry stuck at the entrance to the Business Park either.

:(

Looking back though, it wasn't really horrific at all, it was just slow.

In my day

Okay this is recent

For 10 years ( banned from having neighbours) Mrs Donsdaft and I lived in a cottage on a private estate ( ruined castle et all) some 35 miles south of Aberdeen.

We had some belters of winters

I used to get up at 5.00 and force my way through snowdrifts, over hills, down hills with narrow bridges at the bottom of them etc etc.

Only once I never made it ( despite a ridiculous effort ) and that was because the coast road and the main duel carriageway were both closed with jackknifed lorries.

Must open shop.

On a number of occasions I slept at the shop because I was never going to get back in in the morning.

Anyone needing their nosepads changing free of charge, I was there.

Fuckin wimps the lot of this namby pamby generation

Surely the joke is the opposite? The martyrs risking themselves (I ken, there's zero risk in the NE at the moment) to get to their meaningless jobs? Our absolute certainty in the importance of the work we do that a couple of days will make a massive difference. We've attached such a god-like status to work that taking a few days off is deemed ridiculous, almost treasonous. Yet most of us probably sit in bull-shite jobs that could go tomorrow with little effect on the way the world moves. We should be encouraging folk to take the time off, spend it with kids or whatever when the weather is fun (for the kids of course...) rather than sitting through hours of frightened traffic all heading in the same direction.

Fuck work, sna's ace.

Edit: that wisnae a direct response to you DD

The wife was saying that one of the people stranded on a motorway was complaining that his boss had insisted he go to Aberdeen. Social media nailed him by saying "if your boss asked you to jump off a bridge, would you?"

Let's not forget the ego in situations like this. Some/most "bosses" are arseholes, employees themselves and the thrill they get by pretending (to themselves) that they are "important" - so influential in fact that they can affect other people's lives - is a drug they can't get enough of.

It was ever thus. Give a cunt "power" and they'll use it and abuse it for their own ends, just in varying degrees and for varying effects of course.
