Tubby Ogston's Awa'

The notice is in the paper today that our '60s keeper Tubby Ogston has died at the age of 78.

160 odd games for us, all of them even before I can remember though

I thought he was already gone.

His brother (I think it was a brother, might have been some other relative though) used to be the janny at my primary school. Affa fine bloke but dead for many a year.

Heard of him but didnt realise he was as recent as the 60s.Was there nae another Tubby(or Soapy) Ogston back in the war era?  Could be a bit of senility creeping in...

I remember him well, he was the goalie for the first 4 or 5 years of my Pittodrie experience.  Big unit for those days but very capable and threw himself around a bit.  I played in goal at primary school and he was a bit of a hero along with Ernie (see above) Winchester.  Liverpool bought him as cover for Tommy Lawrence IIRC.  Tubby had a massive boot up the park from hand and from the goal kick spot.  I seem to recall anecdotal tales from some of my Huntly family of him kicking the ball straight out of the park over the opposite goals at Christie Park: also that he played Highland league before and after his Dons/Liverpool/Doncaster career.  Buckie Thistle or Peterheid?  Anyone clarify?

Thanks Elgindon, born in Buckie played for Banks O' Dee (as many Dons of that era did) sounds right.

Before my time too, first one I remember playing was also Bobby Clark, but I was at school in the same class from P4 upwards as Ernie McGarr's younger daughter...

What a dame she was. A one girl wrecking machine. Her old man could sink a pint or two ana..

Re: Soapy Ogston, that comes from an old soapworks on the Gallowgate owned by Ogston & Co. Latterly next door to the Lumpy.

Well before my time. But, I do remember reading about him. I did think he had already passed. R.I.P
